Book Synopsis A Hawaiian Florilegium by : Mary Grierson
Download or read book A Hawaiian Florilegium written by Mary Grierson and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Tropical Botanical Garden is pleased to present the Hawaiian works of internationally acclaimed botanical artist Mary Grierson. Extending a centuries-old tradition made popular in the studios of Ehret and Redoute, Ms. Grierson combines the artist's eye for beauty and balance with the botanist's need for accuracy. Native plants of Hawaii are a primary focus of this volume and the reason the Garden invited Ms. Grierson to Kauai for five working visits in the 1970s and 1980s. But the collection also reflects the Hawaiian landscape seen by contemporary residents and visitors alike - with Polynesian and modern agricultural and ornamental plant immigrants now competing with the natives for attention and for space. With his general introduction to the flora of Hawaii and in accompaniments to each painting, botanist Peter Green narrates the interaction of plants and people - through the ethnobotany and legends of the early Hawaiians, the taxonomic research of botanists past and present, and the history that brought such an incredible mix of species to the Islands. A central theme is the interaction of native and introduced plants, with its warnings about the loss of Hawaii's unique natural heritage. A Hawaiian Florilegium is a convergence of fine art, scientific illustration, and botanical history.
Book Synopsis An Arkansas Florilegium by : Edwin Smith
Download or read book An Arkansas Florilegium written by Edwin Smith and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Arkansas Florilegium is a late-flowering extension of the work initiated sixty years ago with University of Arkansas botanist Edwin B. Smith’s first entries in his pioneering Atlas and Annotated List of the Vascular Plants of Arkansas. Soon after this seminal survey of the state’s flora was published in 1978, Kent Bonar, a Missouri-born Thoreau acolyte employed as a naturalist by the Arkansas Park Service, began lugging the volume along on hikes through the woods surrounding his Newton County home, entering hundreds upon hundreds of meticulous illustrations into Smith’s work. Thirty-five years later, with Smith retired and Bonar long gone from the park service but still drawing, Bonar’s weathered and battered copy of the atlas was seized by a diverse cadre of amateur admirers motivated by fears of its damage or loss. Their fears were certainly justified; after all, the pages were now jammed to the margins with some 3,500 drawings, and the volume had already survived one accidental dunking in an Ozark stream. An Arkansas Florilegium brings Smith’s and Bonar’s knowledge and lifelong diligence to the world in this unique mix of art, science, and Arkansas saga.

Download or read book Joseph Banks' Florilegium written by Mel Gooding and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compact edition of Joseph Banks’ extraordinary botanical engravings of flora discovered on Captain Cook’s first voyage. Joseph Banks accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage around the world from 1768 to 1771. A gifted and wealthy young naturalist, Banks collected exotic flora from Madeira, Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia, and Java, bringing back over 1,300 species that had never been seen or studied by Europeans. On his return, Banks commissioned over 700 engravings. Known collectively as Banks’ Florilegium, they are some of the most precise and exquisite examples of botanical illustration ever created. The Florilegium was never published in Banks’ lifetime, and it was not until 1990 that a complete set in color was issued under the direction of the British Museum. It is from these prints that the new compact edition of Joseph Banks’ Florilegium is selected, as directed by David Mabberley, who has provided expert botanical commentaries. Art historian Mel Gooding sets the works in context while an afterword by Joe Studholme describes the history of modern printing. Joseph Banks’ Florilegium is not only a great work of science, but also a major achievement in collaborative Enlightenment art and a volume of outstanding beauty.

Download or read book Hrotsvit of Gandersheim written by Katharina M Wilson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selection of the works of Hrotsvit, the first-known woman dramatist, containing legends, dramas, and epics. Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (c.935 - c.975), almost certainly of noble Saxon parentage, was a canoness of the Saxon imperial abbey of Gandersheim, living and working there during its time of greatest material prosperity and cultural and intellectual pre-eminence. Her importance cannot be overestimated: she is the first poet of Saxony; the first known dramatist of Christianity (indeed the first known woman dramatist of any time); and a woman displaying erudition and wit in an essentially patriarchal age, a female author in a literary field dominated by men who insisted on re-evaluating and redrawing the literary depiction of women. Discovered in the late fifteenth century, her extraordinary oeuvre, written in medieval Latin, comprises a wide variety of genres: eight legends, six dramas, and two epics, organised into three books. The present volume contains a selection of Hrotsvit's works in Englishtranslation, together with an interpretative essay, critical introduction, and scholarly apparatus. Professor KATHARINA WILSONteaches at the University of Georgia.
Book Synopsis An Irish Florilegium by : Wendy Walsh
Download or read book An Irish Florilegium written by Wendy Walsh and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1983 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wendy Walsh, following in the traditions of botanical artists from previous ages, has put her exceptional skills to marvellous effect in this beautiful collection of watercolour drawings. She has painted here a selection of the native and cultivated flora of Ireland, where she lives, chosen not only for their botanical interest or attractiveness but also because they happen to have an interesting history: Ireland has produced a surprising number of devoted and intrepid plant-hunters who played a significant part in the introduction into Europe of plants from remote places. Ruth Isabel Ross recounts the history of plant collecting and horticulture by the Irish since earliest times, and Dr Charles Nelson has written extensive notes on the individual plants. The main attraction of this book, however, remains the delicate and subtle watercolour drawings of Wendy Walsh, who works only from nature, painting the actual plants which are her subjects.

Book excerpt: First critical edition of the first and longest book of an important Byzantine anthology This is the editio princeps of the first book of the Florilegium Coislinianum, an important Byzantine anthology dated to the 9th or 10th c. The critical text presented here is based upon a detailed examination of all the known witnesses of the florilegium, and it has been thoroughly compared with its sources. It is supplemented with a philological introduction which studies the manuscript tradition and the relationship of the manuscripts, explains the orthographical peculiarities of the tradition, defines the ratio edendi and discusses the most relevant textual corruptions of the archetype. The Florilegium Coislinianum, which deals with subjects ranging from the creation of angels to sin and virtues, has only recently received full attention from the scholarly community. This edition is part of a much larger collaborative project, in the context of which a research team, based at the KU Leuven, is currently studying and editing diverse sections of this florilegium.
