Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Application of Analysis to Solid Geometry This work was commenced by Sir. Gregory in the course of the year 1842; and in the Autumn of 1843 had received his final revision as far as the end of Chapter XI.: he had likewise made numerous extracts from various sources preparatory to writing Chapters XII., XIII., XIV., XV.; and had arranged a collection of Problems which, with slight additions, forms the subject of Chapter xvi., the last of the Treatise. His further progress in this work was unhappily arrested by death. Having, in accordance with the last wishes of my most valued friend, undertaken the completion of this work, I have fulfilled my task to the best of my ability. It is hoped that the natural difficulty of bringing to a conclusion a treatise commenced by another, will secure for me the indulgence of the reader. The principal object of this Treatise is to develop a system of Solid Geometry, in a form suitable to mathematical students, by means of symmetrical equations. The general advantage of symmetry in this branch of mathematics is so striking, that the utility of such a work will be at once recognized. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 1417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art, treatise on the energetic mechanics of Lagrange and Hamilton, that is, classical analytical dynamics, and its principal applications to constrained systems (contact, rolling, and servoconstraints). It is a book on advanced dynamics from a unified viewpoint, namely, the kinetic principle of virtual work, or principle of Lagrange. As such, it continues, renovates, and expands the grand tradition laid by such mechanics masters as Appell, Maggi, Whittaker, Heun, Hamel, Chetaev, Synge, Pars, Luré, Gantmacher, Neimark, and Fufaev. Many completely solved examples complement the theory, along with many problems (all of the latter with their answers and many of them with hints). Although written at an advanced level, the topics covered in this 1400-page volume (the most extensive ever written on analytical mechanics) are eminently readable and inclusive. It is of interest to engineers, physicists, and mathematicians; advanced undergraduate and graduate students and teachers; researchers and professionals; all will find this encyclopedic work an extraordinary asset; for classroom use or self-study. In this edition, corrections (of the original edition, 2002) have been incorporated.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analytical Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, and the Analysis of Angular Sections: Designed for the Use of Students in the University of LondonThe system has however been changed, and analytical science has in these countries at length obtained that attention as an elementary part of mathematical education, to which its importance so justly entitles it. Students who are about to com mence trigonometry have now generally obtained a competent knowledge of algebra, and the reasons which hitherto rendered it expedient to treat the subject geometrically no longer exist. In the fol lowing treatise I have accordingly brought to my aid the powerful resources of analysis. On the property of similar triangles, already mentioned, as a basis, I have attempted to raise the whole super structure of trigonometrical science by reasoning purely analytical.' Nor have I found it necessary to resort to any principles beyond what must be considered the rudiments of algebra, except in those higher departments of trigonometry which are only read by students who have made consider able progress in mathematics. Those who are conversant with the first principles of elementary algebra are competent to study all those parts of the present work which are necessary for the ele ments of natural philosophy, and which are di stinguished by an asterisk in the table of contents.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Cubic and Quartic Curves The present work originated in certain notes, made about twenty-five years ago, upon the properties of some of the best-known higher plane curves; but upon attempting to revise them for the press, it appeared to me impossible to discuss the subject adequately without investigating the theory of the singularities of algebraic curves. I have accordingly included Plucker's equations, which determine the number and the species of the simple singularities of any algebraic curve; and have also considered all the compound singularities which a quartic curve can possess. This treatise is intended to be an elementary one on the subject. I have therefore avoided investigations which would require a knowledge of Modern Algebra, such as the theory of the invariants, covariants and other concomitants of a ternary quantic; and have assumed scarcely any further knowledge of analysis on the part of the reader, than is to be found in most of the ordinary text-books on the Differential Calculus and on Analytical Geometry. I have also endeavoured to give special prominence to geometrical methods, since the experience of many years has convinced me that a judicious combination of geometry and analysis is frequently capable of shortening and simplifying, what would otherwise be a tedious and lengthy investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on the Modern Geometry of the Point, Line, and Circle, Vol. 1: Being the Substance of Lectures Delivered in the University of Dublin to the Candidates for Honors of the First Year in Arts The work now offered to the public contains, as its title indicates, the substance of lectures de livered for some years in the University of Dublin to the candidates for mathematical honors of the first year in arts; and supposes, accordingly, a previous acquaintance only with the first six books of the Elements of Euclid, and with just that amount of the principles of Elementary Algebra essential to an intelligent conception of the nature of signs, and of the meaning and use of the ordi nary symbols of operation and quantity. The acknowledged want of a systematic treatise on Modern Elementary Geometry, adapted to the requirements of students unacquainted with the higher processes of Algebraic Analysis, which of late years have been applied so successfully to the extension of geometrical knowledge, has induced the author to come forward with the present attempt to supply the deficiency. The only existing work of the same nature in the English language with which he is acquainted, the Principles of Modern Geometry, of the late lamented Dr. Mulcahy. All aspects of mathematics are covered: pure and applied, probability and statistics, foundations and philosophy. Sometimes two writings from the same period and the same subject are taken together. The biography of the author(s) is recorded, and the circumstances of the preparation of the writing are given. When the writing is of some lengths an analytical table of its contents is supplied. The contents of the writing is reviewed, and its impact described, at least for the immediate decades. Each article ends with a bibliography of primary and secondary items. First book of its kind Covers the period 1640-1940 of massive development in mathematics Describes many of the main writings of mathematics Articles written by specialists in their field
