Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic History of the United States The purpose of this book is not to rehearse the events common to political and constitutional histories of the United States, but rather to emphasize the points neglected by them. The keynote of all American history, from whatever standpoint it may be written, is found in the efforts of a virile and ener getic people to appropriate and develop the wonderful natural resources of a new continent and there to realize their ideals of liberty and government. The economic history of the United States is largely the story of the achievements of a people working under free competition, untrammeled by custom, tradition, or political limitations, and whose changing conditions of environment constantly compelled new adapta tions and promoted ingenuity and energy of character. The history of this economic struggle is not one whit less interesting or dramatic than the political history of the same period, while it is absolutely essential to a thorough understanding of the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in the Economic History of the United States The need of providing large college classes with collateral reading in a course on the economic history of the United States has led to the preparation of this book. Its purpose has therefore been pri marily to provide a sufficient body of material to supplement the more systematic text book and lectures. This material has, with only one or two exceptions, been drawn from contemporary sources; in the later periods, with the growing wealth of such material, Official documents have been largely used. But in every period these documents have been supplemented by the more human and the more illuminating comments of travelers, Observers, and others who were entitled to speak authoritatively. Where controversial matters have been treated, every effort has been made to present both sides fairly. In the face of the great amount of material available for such a work as this the main task of the editors has necessarily been one of selection, and in performing this task they have endeavored to present a comprehensive yet balanced picture of the economic activities and development of each period. Agriculture, manufactures, tariff, com merce, transportation, money and banking, labor, and the movement of the population have, each in turn, been given due emphasis in the panoramic picture here unfolded. AS among the different periods it is believed that a balance has been maintained that will commend itself to teachers of American history. TO the period from 1600 to 1808 about one fourth of the book is devoted; one half to that from 1808 to 1860; and the remaining fourth to the period since the Civil War. In 1912 the Bureau of the Census of the United States estimated the total wealth of the nation, in terms of money, to be This wealth consisted of land and buildings, live stock, farm implements, manufacturing plants and their equipment, railways, street car lines, light and power stations and other public utilities such as telegraph and telephone systems, all kinds of agricultural and manufactured products, min ing products, personal property of various kinds, and gold and silver. We like to think of the United States as the richest and most prosperous nation in the world; we have pride in the fact that with its huge production of cereals, meats, and cotton, this country performs a greater part in feeding and clothing the world than any other single coun try; with its output of coal, iron and copper, it has a fore most position among modern industrial nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutional and Economic History During the early decades of the present century, Cincinnati was the most important commercial center of the West. In 1820, Chicago had not yet come into existence, St. Louis was a mere trader's settlement, and Louisville a modest town of some four thousand inhabitants. The traffic Of the entire region drained by the Mississippi river and its tributaries was transported by water, and Cincinnati was practically the only market in which the surplus products of the South and West could be exchanged for eastern and northern manufactures. The application of steam to river navigation in the decade between 1820 and 1830 greatly strengthened and developed these natural advantages. Louisville and St. Louis rose about the same time to commercial importance, but their competition only served to stimulate the growth of the older city. Population increased from in 1820 to 16i, o44 in 1860, and remained throughout this entire period the largest of any city west of the seaboard.1 Commercial relations ex tended from Pittsburgh to Fort Benton, Montana, and from St. Paul to New Orleans. Particularly with the South, as a result of advantageous location and intimate acquaintance with the tastes and habits of southern merchants, a large and profitable business was enjoyed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial History of the United States The history of the United States, more than that of any Old World country, is the record of physical achievement. The exploitation of virgin territory by a race of extraordinary intelligence, resource, and energy is the essential theme of our national history. Political events and social changes are conditioned on industrial evolution, and the story of America can be comprehended only in the light of her material aspirations and attainments. The advance of agriculture from the pioneer farm to the bonanza ranch, the expansion of manufactures consequent on the substitution of machinery and factory organization for the domestic handicrafts, the service rendered to commerce by steam, the telegraph, electricity, - these are the really potent factors in the history of the United States. The transformation on industrial organization from in indentured service to the trade union, from the self-employed artisan to the trust, from wild-cat banking to the national bank system, has more significance than the ups and downs of parties or the result of a presidential election. Political revolution and military undertakings cannot be ignored by the student of economic history. War must be treated not as picturesque by-play merely, but as a disastrous interruption on industrial progress. The financing of a war often introduces a disturbing factor in to the currency system, emergency taxes retard or promote business interest and furnish opportunity for special legislation, the alterations in the labor supply, while army life has a demoralizing influence on business habits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Economic Tendencies: An Economic History of America IN a work portraying economic evolution from a time genera tions in the past down to the latest practicable moment, in order to form a basis as accurate as possible for predicting the future, it is important to know the date of actual writing. The procession of events during the last six years has altered so drastically, and has transformed so many times, the complexion of public opinion, that words must be interpreted in the light of the date of their utterance. This book was begun in the winter of 1912-13, as soon as the data from the census of 1910 had become available, and some portions remain unchanged since then. On the other hand, some statistical features have been brought down to the fall of 1917, with views in the text to correspond. During 1918 and 1919 the diction of the entire book was revised, and in the latter year the order of chapters was shifted. Occasional foot-notes or paragraphs were added which carry with them evidence of their later date. But, since it was manifestly impossible to bring the entire book into consistency with the viewpoint of these later years, unless it were to be entirely rewritten, care was taken to preserve all of the sentiments of the book in substance as they had been written in 1917 or before. The subdivision of the book into four Parts, namely, Back ground, Economic Principles, Data and Social Reactions, was an afterthought. Each of these four parts comprise references to all four of these topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Economic Supremacy The rapidity with which the manufacture of hardware has grown in Germany may be judged from the fact that it compared with that of France m 1875 as four to three, and in 1895 as five to two. But if Germany has outstripped France, the activity of America has been even greater. In 1840 the United States had not entered the field of international competi tion; in 1897 she undersold the English in London; and her product for 1898 promises nearly to equal that of Great Britain and France combined. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recent Financial, Industrial, and Commercial Experiences of the United States: A Curious Chapter in Politico-Economic History IF it be an axiom in political and social, as well as in physical and natural science, that the first essential for progress consists in the cor rect observation and record of phenomena, whereby old laws or princi ples may be verified or extended, and new ones discovered, it would be difficult to imagine a field more fruitful for investigation and more promising of reward, than the history of the recent financial, industrial, and commercial experiences of the United States - experiences which have truly the character of vast social and political experiments, made on a scale of magnitude rarely, if ever, before equalled; for the most part empirically tentative in character, and affecting in their results, not only the growth, the income, and the industrial pursuits of the nation directly and immediately concerned, but also in a greater or less degree the trade and commerce of the whole civilized world. It is proposed to briefly relate the history of these experiences especially in their relations to prices, taxation, industrial development. And international commercial relations.
