Book Synopsis Economics of Forestry by : Roger A. Sedjo
Download or read book Economics of Forestry written by Roger A. Sedjo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. The 'Economics of Forestry' is a specialized subset of resource economics addressing a specific natural resource - the forest - which is usually a relatively long time period. Hence, forest economics has characteristics similar to nonrenewable resources but also has those of a renewable resource, in some cases approaching those of agriculture. This volume comprises some of the most significant journal essays in forest economics and forest policy. The International Library of Environmental Economics and Policy explores the influence of economics on the development of environmental and natural resource policy. In a series of twenty five volumes, the most significant journal essays in key areas of contemporary environmental and resource policy are collected. Scholars who are recognized for their expertise and contribution to the literature in the various research areas serve as volume editors and write essays that provides the context for the collection. Volumes in the series reflect three broad strands of economic research including 1) Natural and Environmental Resources, 2) Policy Instruments and Institutions and 3) Methodology. The editors, in their introduction to each volume, provide a state-of-the-art overview of the topic and explain the influence and relevance of the collected papers on the development of policy. This reference series provides access to the economic literature that has shaped contemporary perspectives on land use analysis and policy.

Book Synopsis Drugs of Natural Origin by : Anthony Artuso
Download or read book Drugs of Natural Origin written by Anthony Artuso and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the growing interest in biodiversity as a source of valuable new products and biochemical information, there have been very few systematic efforts to estimate the value of preserving biological resources for this purpose. Drugs of Natural Origin gives you a detailed model of the value of wild biological resources for pharmaceutical research and development. Author Anthony Artuso presents several decision models and analytical techniques that you can use to assess the economics of biochemical prospecting efforts whether you’re part of a private corporation, nonprofit research institute, developing country government, or international organization. Drugs of Natural Origin explores the policy options available to developing countries and international organizations to tap into the emerging market for biological resources in such a way as to provide both incentives for conservation of biodiversity and new opportunities for economic development. You’ll find evaluations of a range of proactive strategies that can be used to protect and enhance developing countries’biological resources. In addition, you’ll learn about a bioeconomic model that incorporates the potential biochemical and genetic value of a diverse ecosystem into land use planning and development. Developing country and international policymakers will find Drugs of Natural Origin a useful tool for determining how best to conserve biodiversity, while sustainably developing biological resources. This book outlines a comprehensive and integrated set of policy measures, research and development initiatives, and financing arrangements that could increase biochemical research activity while providing incentives for conservation of biodiversity and a potential path for sustainable development. Managers of pharmaceutical R&D programs will use the decision models developed in Drugs of Natural Origin to plan, evaluate, and continually refine their R&D programs. The book’s theoretic framework provides you with an analytical tool for systematically evaluating critical decisions at each stage of the R&D process. Thus, you learn to incorporate both subjective assessments and quantitative data into a comprehensive framework for R&D decisionmaking.
Book Synopsis Agricultural Values of Plant Genetic Resources by : Robert Eugene Evenson
Download or read book Agricultural Values of Plant Genetic Resources written by Robert Eugene Evenson and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International concern over the threat to species and ecosystems caused by human activities is at an all time high, which may result in high costs to present and future generations. The economic costs and benefits associated with the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources of actual or potential value for food and agriculture is largely unknown. Economic instruments that can encourage implementation of socially optimal genetic resource conservation strategies as well as the sharing of the real benefits and costs are a useful measurement tool. This book is an edited compilation of papers from the Symposium on the Economics of Valuation and Conservation of Genetic Resources for Agriculture held in Rome in May 1996. It addresses some of the key issues involved in the estimation of the economic value of conserving genetic resources for agriculture. It covers the modelling of the value of Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs), empirical studies of PGRs (including field diversity and yield vulnerability), seven empirical studies of PGR breeding values, property rights in PGRs and the implications of modern biotechnology methods for PGR values. The book will be essential reading for workers in agricultural economics, plant breeding and genetics, and biodiversity and conservation.

Book Synopsis Conserving Biological Diversity by : Susan M. Braatz
Download or read book Conserving Biological Diversity written by Susan M. Braatz and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loss of biological diversity through the extinction of species, the conversion and degradation of natural habitats, and the disruption of ecological processes, is occurring throughout the world at an unprecendented rate. As species and their habitats disappear, so do products of present and future value, genes with which to improve crop varieties and livestock, and the natural resiliencies of the world's living resources to respond to climatic and enviornmental change. Nowhere else is the loss of biodiversity expected to be higher during the coming decades than in the Asia-Pacific region. The loss of biodiversity is irreversible. Recognizing this, the Asia Environment Division prepared this paper which is intended to identify priority areas of investment in the Asia-Pacific region. The paper accepts the importance of biodiversity conservation and suggests that policy change coupled with the establishment of protected area systems will be critical to success. A wide range of interventions will be needed to support these efforts toward conserving biodiversity - interventions involving national and local governments, national and international nongovernmental organizations and, most importantly, local people. The strategy defined in this paper is intended to complement existing national and international initiatives and to build partnerships in conservation for the 1990s.
