Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new, detailed examination that explains how elegant brains have been shaped in evolution. It consists of 19 chapters written by academic professionals in neuroscience, opening with the origin of single-celled creatures and then introducing primordial types in invertebrates with the great abundance of the brains of vertebrates. Important topics are provided in a timely manner, because novel techniques emerged rapidly—as seen, for examples, in the next-generation sequencers and omics approaches. With the explosion of big data, neural-related genes and molecules is now on the radar. In fact, Europe’s big science and technology projects, a €1 billion plan called the Human Brain Project and the Blue Brain Project to understand mammalian brain networks, have been launched in recent years. Furthermore, with the rise of recently advanced artificial intelligence, there is great enthusiasm for understanding the evolution of neural networks. The views from brain evolution in nature provide an essential opportunity to generate ideas for novel neuron- and brain-inspired computation. The ambition behind this book is that it will stimulate young scientists who seek a deeper understanding in order to find the basic principles shaping brains that provided higher cognitive functions in the course of evolution.

Book Synopsis Control Processes in Fish Physiology by : J.C. Rankin
Download or read book Control Processes in Fish Physiology written by J.C. Rankin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1983-04-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of major advances in our understanding of how physiological processes, and related behaviour patterns, are controlled and integrated in fish are presented in this book. Such information is not merely of academic interest since it is also fundamental to the scientific basis of fish farming and fisheries. The contributors are acknowledged experts from Europe and North America. The major themes covered are the autonomic and central nervous systems, the control of digestion, respiration and circulation, kidney function, endocrinology, and control of metabolism. Particular attention is given to reproduction in chapters on trout and teleost reproduction.

Book Synopsis Brain Development of Medaka Fish by : Yuji Ishikawa
Download or read book Brain Development of Medaka Fish written by Yuji Ishikawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the developmental process of the brain of the medaka fish. It aims to understand the brain structure of vertebrates, including humans, by taking the brain of the medaka fish as an example and showing its actual developmental process. From developmental and evolutionary viewpoints, the understanding of the brain proceeds from simple to complex structures. Fish retain the basic form of vertebrates, and their brain morphology is relatively simple. Therefore, the fish brain is useful in understanding the brain structure. This book is unique for describing the entire process of the brain development in a specific fish. In addition, the book introduces the readers to a new concept of “Hourglass of Brain Morphogenesis”, concerning the general rule of brain morphogenesis in vertebrates. The authors propose that the brain morphology is highly conserved at the middle developmental stage but diverges more extensively at earlier and later stages. The new concept challenges the accepted theory that has been widely shared for about 200 years since K. von Baer (1828, 1837) and K. von Kupffer (1906) who proposed that three primary brain vesicles at earlier developmental stages develop into five secondary brain vesicles at later developmental stages in all vertebrates. The book provides a basic understanding of the vertebrate brain and is useful for all readers who wish to understand the complex structure of the brain.
