Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Atlas of Ophthalmoscopy: With an Introduction to the Use of the Ophthalmoscope At the request of the publishers, I willingly undertook the translating and editing of this little work, recognising that it supplied a distinct want. To the student it will, I hope, prove a useful guide, and the busy practitioner will be able to refresh his memory by consulting the plates, most of which are very accurately drawn. With the exception of the addition of four diagrams (Figs. B, C, E, and F)taken from my book on Eyestrain, no alterations of any importance have been made from the German edition. Like its predecessor, the 2nd edition provides a concise, thorough and up-to-date introduction to the field of ophthalmology. Medical students on ophthalmology rotations, as well as beginning residents, will find it an invaluable companion on the ward and a useful aid for test preparation. Fully trained physicians and other health professionals, too, will be able to use it for a self-taught refresher course in ophthalmology. The special features of this book include:- More than 500 clear, well-drawn illustrations and color photographs illustrating clinical findings, disease pathophysiology, and more- Many new illustrations since the previous edition reflecting the latest developments in the field, particularly in the chapters on the retina and the cornea- A new appendix containing correlations between clinical findings and the latest examining techniques, as well as a guide to visual field defects- Comprehensive presentation of examining techniques- An expanded glossary and a copiously illustrated table of important anatomical structures- A convenient and comprehensive table of cardinal manifestations of disease with associated findings, probable diagnoses, and suggestions for diagnostic work-up- Clearly and consistently organized chapters on all major diseasesJust as in the 1st edition, the individual chapters are organized to maximize their usefulness as a teaching tool:- Each chapter begins with the relevant basic concepts in anatomy and physiology- All diseases are consistently presented in accordance with clinical logic: first the symptoms, then the examination findings, then the diagnosis- The diseases are both described in words and shown in didactically useful illustrationsUnderstand the entire field of ophthalmology with this compact, beautifully illustrated text!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual and Atlas of Medical Ophthalmoscopy The ophthalmoscope is of use to the physician because it gives information, often not otherwise obtainable, regarding the existence or nature of disease elsewhere than in the eye. This information depends upon the circumstance that we have under observation - 1. The termination of an artery and the commencement of a vein, with the blood circulating in each. 2. The termination of a nerve, which, from its close proximity to the brain, and from other circumstances, undergoes significant changes in various diseases of the brain, and in affections of other parts of the nervous system. 3. A nervous structure - the retina, and a vascular structure - the choroid - which also suffer in a peculiar way in many general diseases. For the efficient use of the ophthalmoscope in medical practice, the student must be familiar with the use of the instrument; he must also be familiar with the normal fundus oculi, with the changes in its appearance (congenital and other) that are of no clinical significance, and also with those that are ocular in origin, such as posterior staphyloma, glaucomatous excavation, and the like. An acquaintance with these must be gained from the ophthalmic surgeon before inferences can safely be drawn regarding the significance of other alterations met with in various diseases. The following pages assume the possession of a general knowledge of the use of the instrument, but a few words regarding some points which are of special importance may be of service. A first requisite in medical ophthalmoscopy is familiarity with the direct method of examination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Color Atlas of Gonioscopy, by Wallace L.M. Alward, MD, and Reid A. Longmuir, MD, is a brief, but comprehensive, introduction to gonioscopy. Gonioscopy is a visual science, so the greater part of the book is devoted to illustrations of gonioscopic and slit-lamp findings, normal and abnormal. The inspiration for this book came out of a remarkable collection of water-color paintings of the angle created by Lee Allen in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The paintings show the angle with unique clarity. Mr. Allen's paintings have been used to illustrate points whenever possible and have used photographs when no paintings were available."--Site web de l'éditeur.
