Book excerpt: "Walleye have become an increasingly popular game fish in Kansas since their introduction Into state reservoirs in the mld-1950's. In recent years, a good supply of stockable fish has prompted fisheries managers to introduce walleye into smaller state fishing lakes. This practice intends to make walleye fishing available to a greater number of Kansas anglers, end provides an additional predator to help control panfish number. To date, however, stocking has resulted in limited success in the establishment of self sustaining walleye populations"--Page 1.

Book excerpt: "As part of Minnesota's Walleye (Sander vitreus) egg take practice, 10% of eggs taken for hatchery a stocked back into the donor lake. For Andrusia, part of the Cass Lake Chain of Lakes (Chain), this practice can result in elevated fry densities (mean 17,000 fry/littoral hectare. However, if fry are able to disperse and use all available littoral hectares throughout the Chain, fry densities would be intermediate to typical stocking densities for Minnesota lakes (1,200-2400 fry/littoral hectare). In 2016-2018, 3-3.5 million fry were mass-marked by immersion in oxytetracycline (OTC) prior to stocking into Andrusia to allow differentiation between these fish and those originating from natural reproduction or stocking of unmarked fry in other connected waters. Age-0 Walleyes were sampled throughout the Chain each fall (2016-2018) primarily by boat electrofishing. Each year, age-0 fish were widely distributed by late August. Combined mean marking rates (2016-2018) for each lake of the Chain ranged from 16-97% and cohort marking rates ranged from 71-78%. The ability of stocked fish to disperse throughout the Chain helped suppress density dependent effects, although, total length (mm) increased as catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) decreased with distance from stocking site. In 2019, a chain-wide gill net assessment resulted in cohort (2016-2018) marking rates at ages 1 to 3 similar to their age-0 marking rates. The Chain was previously thought to be largely self-sustaining with put-back stocking considered a social aspect of management by compensating for the removal of eggs (i.e. potential recruits) rather than contributory to the Walleye population, but our results suggest that this stocking is substantially contributing to the population."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "Population density of walleye (Stlzostedlon vitreum in Kansas reservoirs appeared to be related to storage ratio, with low storage ratios (high discharges) producing low densities, moderate storage ratios yielding high densities, and high storage ratios having densities slightly lower than occur at moderate discharges. Both natural recruitment and stocking success of walleye appeared to be related to storage ratio, with little stocking success occurring at reservoirs having mean storage ratios

Book excerpt: Brown Trout: Biology, Ecology and Management A comprehensive guide to the most current research, history, genetics and ecology of the brown trout including challenging environmental problems The brown trout is an iconic species across its natural European distribution and has been introduced throughout the World. Brown Trout offers a comprehensive review of the scientific information and current research on this major fish species. While the brown trout is the most sought species by anglers, its introduction to various waters around the world is causing serious environmental problems. At the same time, introduction of exogenous brown trout lineages threats conservation of native gene pools of populations in many regions. The authors summarize the important aspects of the brown trout’s life history and ecology and focus on the impact caused by the species. The text explores potential management strategies in order to maintain numerous damaged populations within its natural distributional range and to ameliorate its impacts in exotic environments. The authors include information on a wide-range of topics such as recent updates in population genetics, evolutionary history, reproductive traits and early ontogeny, life history plasticity in anadromous brown trout and life history of the adfluvial brown trout and much more. This vital resource: Contains the latest research on the biology and ecology of brown trout Includes information on phylogeography, genetics, population dynamics and stock management Spotlights the brown trout’s introduction to regions around the world and the serious environmental impacts Offers a comprehensive review of conservation and management techniques Written for salmonid scientists and researchers, fishery and environmental managers, and students of population genetics, ecology and population dynamics, Brown Trout explores the most recent findings on the history, ecology and sustainability of this much-researched species.
