Book excerpt: This report analyzes the expected corrosion behavior of nuclear fuel waste containers in a conceptual Canadian disposal vault. The container materials considered are dilute titanium alloys and oxygen-free copper. The report presents various models that have been developed to predict container lifetimes, including the currently used model which does not take into account limitation of crevice corrosion and an outline of a model in which crevice corrosion is limited by repassivation. The disposal vault conditions considered change with time as the initially trapped oxygen is consumed and as the heat and radiation produced by the waste decay. The appendices contain detailed reassessments of the corrosion behavior of the two types of containers, in which model assumptions are examined and failure modes discussed.

Book excerpt: Initially, the snubber was installed between a high pressure centrifugal pump and its enclosure to see if fretting damage to the snubber screw could be induced with the pump operating. this was followed by limited cycling in a crank driven snubber tester at 30 hz and several different strokes. after each test, the snubber was disassembled for inspection. the results indicated the following: (i) the ball screw is capable of withstanding the load cycles it was subject to without visible damage. (ii) damage to the split outer race of the main thrust bearing resulted, we believe, from loosening of the locking ring during rig testing. (iii) the mechanism is rugged and appears to be capable of doing the job intended. calculations of velocities, kinetic energies of rotation, braking forces, etc., of the various snubber parts have been made. these results, when compared with the design specifications, were found to be of a magnitude consistent with them.

Book Synopsis Preparation of a Feasibility Study for New Nuclear Power Projects by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Preparation of a Feasibility Study for New Nuclear Power Projects written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A feasibility study represents an important step in the development of a new build nuclear power plant project. It is a complex but necessary step to determine whether a business opportunity is possible, practical and viable. Technical, economical, financial, regulatory, social, environmental aspects of a nuclear power plant programme need to be considered to allow authorities to make informed decisions regarding the possible implementation of the project This publication assists Member States in developing a feasibility study for nuclear power projects and provides guidance to users who are planning to perform such a study, with consideration of both the technical and process areas. These guidelines condense the experience of individuals involved in previous feasibility study efforts and provide industry best practices in order to maximize the usefulness of any results.

Book Synopsis Multilateralization of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle by : Yury Yudin
Download or read book Multilateralization of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle written by Yury Yudin and published by UN. This book was released on 2009 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global energy demands are driving a potential expansion in the use of nuclear energy worldwide. It is estimated that the global nuclear power capacity could double by 2030. This could result in dissemination of sensitive nuclear technologies that present obvious risks of proliferation. Certain international institutional mechanisms for controlling access to sensitive materials, facilities and technologies are needed for dealing with this problem. Over the past few years, 12 proposals have been put forward by states, nuclear industry and international organizations, aimed at checking the spread of uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing technologies. This book presents an overview and analysis of these proposals, including an evaluation of the projected international mechanisms.

Book Synopsis Disposition of High-Level Radioactive Waste Through Geological Isolation by : National Research Council
Download or read book Disposition of High-Level Radioactive Waste Through Geological Isolation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-10-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the next several years, decisions are expected to be made in several countries on the further development and implementation of the geological disposition option. The Board on Radioactive Waste Management (BRWM) of the U.S. National Academies believes that informed and reasoned discussion of relevant scientific, engineering and social issues can-and should-play a constructive role in the decision process by providing information to decision makers on relevant technical and policy issues. A BRWM-initiated project including a workshop at Irvine, California on November 4-5, 1999, and subsequent National Academies' report to be published in spring, 2000, are intended to provide such information to national policy makers both in the U.S. and abroad. To inform national policies, it is essential that experts from the physical, geological, and engineering sciences, and experts from the policy and social science communities work together. Some national programs have involved social science and policy experts from the beginning, while other programs have only recently recognized the importance of this collaboration. An important goal of the November workshop is to facilitate dialogue between these communities, as well as to encourage the sharing of experiences from many national programs. The workshop steering committee has prepared this discussion for participants at the workshop. It should elicit critical comments and help identify topics requiring in-depth discussion at the workshop. It is not intended as a statement of findings, conclusions, or recommendations. It is rather intended as a vehicle for stimulating dialogue among the workshop participants. Out of that dialogue will emerge the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the National Academies' report.
