Many workers in diverse disciplines in otology use the facts from cochlear mechanics for the interpretation of their results. Presented here for the first time is the development of a three-dimensional mechanical model of the curved cochlea including fluid-structure couplings. An important approach for future cochlear modeling is shown by the provision of geometrical data for the input of three-dimensional finite element models by microtomographic imaging. A remarkable article tries to demonstrate a connection between outer hair cell mechanics and the complex phenomenon of tinnitus and will be of special interest for stress engineers. Owing to its strong interdisciplinarity, this issue is not only intended for biophysicists, ENT clinicians and audiologists but also for radiologists, biomechanical engineers and computer engineers.

Book excerpt: The sound pressure pT at the human eardrum has essential advantages as reference signal in audiological and psychoacoustical experiments. Unfortunately, precise pressure measurements very close to the tympanic membrane are difficult. In practice, the microphone has to be positioned at a certain distance from the eardrum. The measured pressure then has to be transformed to the eardrum. As a "classical" approach for the estimation of the necessary transfer function, an acoustical network model of the ear canal is developed from geometrical data of the canal (cross-sectional area function) which is in turn determined from measurements of its acoustical input impedance. Such methods, however, do not provide robust results. In this thesis, the concept of one-dimensional models of the ear canal is examined to find the origin of these errors. For this purpose, the sound field at the human external ear was analyzed using finite element models. Inside the canal, irregular three-dimensional structures occur that cannot be modelled accurately using classical one-dimensional network concepts. Upon these findings, an accurate, efficient and highly feasible method for the estimation of pT was developed. Equal-loudness level contours with reference to the eardrum pressure that were measured as pilot application of the new method are presented.

Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

The full program of the ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE included also contributed presentations made by participants where different topics were explored, among them: Such topics include: nonholonomic systems; flexible multibody systems; contact, impact and collision; numerical methods of differential-algebraical equations; simulation approaches; virtual modelling; mechatronic design; control; biomechanics; space structures and vehicle dynamics. Here, we describe the segmentation of c- focal microscopy images of bee brains (20 individuals) by registration to one or several atlas images. Registration is performed by a highly parallel imp- mentation of an entropy-based nonrigid registration algorithm using B-spline transformations. We present and evaluate different methods to solve the cor- spondence problem in atlas based registration. An image can be segmented by registering it to an individual atlas, an average atlas, or multiple atlases. When registering to multiple atlases, combining the individual segmentations into a ?nalsegmentationcanbeachievedbyatlasselection,ormulticlassi?erdecision fusion. Wedescribeallthesemethodsandevaluatethesegmentationaccuracies that they achieve by performing experiments with electronic phantoms as well as by comparing their outputs to a manual gold standard. The present work is focused on the mathematical and computational t- ory behind a technique for deformable image registration termed Hyperelastic Warping, and demonstration of the technique via applications in image regist- tion and strain measurement. The approach combines well-established prin- ples of nonlinear continuum mechanics with forces derived directly from thr- dimensional image data to achieve registration. The general approach does not require the de?nition of landmarks, ?ducials, or surfaces, although it can - commodate these if available. Representative problems demonstrate the robust and ?exible nature of the approach. Three-dimensional registration methods are introduced for registering MRI volumes of the pelvis and prostate. Book excerpt: The thirty nine papers accepted for pub1 ication in the First International Conference on 'Interfaces in Medicine & Meehani cs' at Swansea in Apri 1, 1988 represent the current state of the art in the science of implant surgery. This initial venture was planned and undertaken when the present editors and their colleagues realised the need for a closer interaction and dialogue between the clinician and. those basic scientists working in the area of implant surgery. Thi s interface, together with the real interface at the material/tissue borders, thus forms the basis of the present conference. These two ideas, we felt, were nicely and effectively captured in the drawing by Edgar Rubins (1915), a perception psycho 1 ogi st, used on the book cover and elsewhere in our 1 iterature. The Proceedings were planned with some difficulty, due to the wi de scope of the conference. However, we felt the best format was to follow the logical progression of implant development. The introductory papers and talks therefore demonstrate the scope of surgical implants in current use. The development of an implant starts with modelling of the proposed implant and its potential environment and the proceedings follow the same format. Following this, materials in current use are discussed.
