Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. John Walker and the Sufferings of the Clergy The object of the present work is on a far more modest scale. I have attempted to give an account of the circumstances in which the Sufierings of the Clergy was written, the materials of which the author was able to avail himself, and the manner in which he used them. I have not alluded in detail to the points on which his conclusions may be corrected or modified in the light of the fuller information now at our disposal, because, as it seemed to me, the results of such a review could be more suitably embodied in a separate account of the period. My purpose has been rather to indicate the point of View from which Walker set out and his equipment for the task. Book excerpt: The Memoirs of Sir John Reresby are a source for the social and political history of England in the late 17th century. As justice of the peace, Governor of York and Member of Parliament for that city and the borough of Aldborough, he was a crucial point of contact between central and local government at a time of strain between the two. He tried to serve both the Crown and the established Church, but like others found this difficult enough in Charles II's reign and impossible in James II's, when he became caught up in the Glorious Revolution in the north of England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communion with God, or in full, "Of communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost each person distinctly, in love, grace, and consolation; or, the saints' fellowship with the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost unfolded," is John Owen's finest devotional treatise. This work expounds "the most glorious truth that believers may have distinct communion with the three persons Father, Son, and Spirit," and being addressed to the "Christian reader" is simpler than much of Owen's theology. (Unabridged. Includes all footnotes.)

Book Synopsis A Brief Instruction in the Worship of God by : John Owen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Owen was an English Nonconformist church leader, theologian, and academic administrator at the University of Oxford. He was chosen to preach to parliament on the day after the execution of King Charles I, and succeeded in fulfilling his task without directly mentioning that event. Another sermon, a plea for sincerity of religion in high places, won not only the thanks of parliament but the friendship of Oliver Cromwell, who took Owen to Ireland as his chaplain, that he might regulate the affairs of Trinity College, Dublin. He pleaded with the House of Commons for the religious needs of Ireland as some years earlier he had pleaded for those of Wales. In March 1651, Cromwell, as Chancellor of Oxford University, gave him the deanery of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and made him Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University in September 1652. During his eight years of official Oxford life Owen showed himself a firm disciplinarian, thorough in his methods, though, as John Locke testifies, the Aristotelian traditions in education underwent no change. While little encouragement was given to a spirit of free inquiry, Puritanism at Oxford was not simply an attempt to force education and culture into "the leaden moulds of Calvinistic theology." Owen, unlike many of his contemporaries, was more interested in the New Testament than in the Old. During his Oxford years he wrote Justitia Divina (1653), an exposition of the dogma that God cannot forgive sin without an atonement; Communion with God (1657), Doctrine of the Saints' Perseverance (1654), his final attack on Arminianism; Vindiciae Evangelicae, a treatise written by order of the Council of State against Socinianism as expounded by John Biddle; On the Mortification of Sin in Believers (1656), an introspective and analytic work; Schism (1657), one of the most readable of all his writings; Of Temptation (1658), an attempt to recall Puritanism to its cardinal spiritual attitude from the jarring anarchy of sectarianism and the pharisaism which had followed on popularity and threatened to destroy the early simplicity.

Book excerpt: 'John Owen on the Work of the Holy Spirit', as the work has generally been called, is perhaps one of the best known, and most highly esteemed of Owen's treatises. 'We are favoured with many excellent books in our tongue', wrote John Newton to a correspondent, 'but I with you agree in assigning one of the first places as a teacher to Dr Owen. I have just finished his discourse on the Holy Spirit which is an epitome, if not the masterpiece of his writings.'
