Book Synopsis June Jordan's Poetry for the People by : Lauren Muller
Download or read book June Jordan's Poetry for the People written by Lauren Muller and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1995 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively "blueprint" (guidebook) represents collaborative efforts of the Poetry for the People, 60 or more multicultural students under the leadership of June Jordan at the University of California, Berkeley. Describing how-tos of grassroots poetry programs and staunchly pledged to current politically correct tenets of diversity, in addition to printing student poems, this anthology reviews how to take readings and workshops into the community and cultivate "empowerment by affirming that everybody has something to offer." Chapters discuss these "cultural literacies": African American; Asian American; Caribbean; Chicana/o, Latina/o American; children's; deaf; gay and lesbian; Irish and Irish American; Native American; and women's. This celebration of "explorative" poetry as a communal, oral art form is an easy-to-use, timely reference for community college, public libraries, and writers' centers. Download or read book Behind the Lines written by Philip Metres and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2007-05 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether Thersites in Homer’s Iliad, Wilfred Owen in “Dulce et Decorum Est,” or Allen Ginsberg in “Wichita Vortex Sutra,” poets have long given solitary voice against the brutality of war. The hasty cancellation of the 2003 White House symposium “Poetry and the American Voice” in the face of protests by Sam Hamill and other invited guests against the coming “shock and awe” campaign in Iraq reminded us that poetry and poets still have the power to challenge the powerful. Behind the Lines investigates American war resistance poetry from the Second World War through the Iraq wars. Rather than simply chronicling the genre, Philip Metres argues that this poetry gets to the heart of who is authorized to speak about war and how it can be represented. As such, he explores a largely neglected area of scholarship: the poet’s relationship to dissenting political movements and the nation. In his elegant study, Metres examines the ways in which war resistance is registered not only in terms of its content but also at the level of the lyric. He proposes that protest poetry constitutes a subgenre that—by virtue of its preoccupation with politics, history, and trauma—probes the limits of American lyric poetry. Thus, war resistance poetry—and the role of what Shelley calls unacknowledged legislators—is a crucial, though largely unexamined, body of writing that stands at the center of dissident political movements.

Book Synopsis Speaking the Other Self by : Jeanne Campbell Reesman
Download or read book Speaking the Other Self written by Jeanne Campbell Reesman and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a variety of writers over an array of time periods, subject matter, race and ethnicity, sexual preference, tradition, genre, and style, this volume represents the fruits of the dramatic and celebrated growth of the study of American women writers today. From established figures such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, and Katherine Ann Porter to emerging voices including early American novelist Tabitha Tenney; the first African American novelist, Harriet E. Wilson; modern dramatist Sophie Treadwell; and contemporaries such as Sandra Cisneros, Grace Paley, and June Jordan, the essays present fresh approaches and furnish a wealth of illustrations for the multiple selves created and addressed in women's writing. These selves intersect and connect to embody a multiethnic rhetoric of the “self” that is uniquely feminine and uniquely American. Calling attention to their “American feminist rhetoric,” Jeanne Campbell Reesman identifies many connections among different feminist, poststructuralist, narratological, and comparativist strategies. The voices of Speaking the Other Self well represent the inner and outer, speaking and hearing, center and frame in women's writing in America, their intersections constructing an ongoing conversation, a borderland of new possibilities—a borderland with no borders, no barriers to thought and response and change, no end of possible voices and selves.

Download or read book Reading the Ground written by Brian John and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive study of Thomas Kinsella's poetry, Brian John explores the poet's development within both the Irish and the English contexts and defines the nature of his poetic achievement. He also offers a new reading of Kinsella's evolving relationship to one of his major literary forebears, W. B. Yeats. What becomes clear is the formidable accomplishment of a poet, now writing at the height of his powers, whose substantial body of work warrants comparison with the grand masters of twentieth-century literature in English - with Yeats, Joyce, and Beckett.
Download or read book Hearts and Minds written by Michael Bibby and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early 1960s to the mid-1970s was one of the most turbulent periods in American history. The U.S. military was engaged in its longest, costliest overseas conflict, while the home front was torn apart by riots, protests, and social activism. In the midst of these upheavals, an underground and countercultural press emerged, giving activists an extraordinary forum for a range of imaginative expressions. Poetry held a prominent place in this alternative media. The poem was widely viewed by activists as an inherently anti-establishment form of free expression, and poets were often in the vanguards of political activism. Hearts and Minds is the first book-length study of the poems of the Black Liberation, Women's Liberation, and GI Resistance movements during the Vietnam era. Drawing on recent cultural and literary theories, Bibby investigates the significance of images, tropes, and symbols of human bodies in activist poetry. Many key political slogans of the period--"black is beautiful," "off our backs"--foreground the body. Bibby demonstrates that figurations of bodies marked important sites of social and political struggle. Although poetry played such an important role in Vietnam-era activism, literary criticism has largely ignored most of this literature. Bibby recuperates the cultural-historical importance of Vietnam-era activist poetry, highlighting both its relevant contexts and revealing how it engaged political and social struggles that continue to motivate contemporary history. Arguing for the need to read cultural history through these "underground" texts, Hearts and Minds offers new grounds for understanding the recent history of American poetry and the role poetry has played as a medium of imaginative political expression.
