Download or read book Grand Larcenies written by P.C. Evans and published by Carcanet Press Ltd. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand Larcenies features generous selections from the work of ten classic modern Dutch poets: Eva Gerlach, Gerrit Kouwenaar, Hester Knibbe, Hans R. Vlek, Rob Schouten, Willem van Toorn, J. Eijkelboom, H.H ter Balkt, K. Michel, and Esther Jansma. The translator, a notable Welsh poet and writer now living in the Netherlands, takes his bearings from Robert Minhinnick's seminal Welsh anthology The Adulterer's Tongue, which attempts by means of experiment rather than rigid linguistic fidelity to approach the imaginative core of the original. 'These versions take risks,' Evans declares; 'they are no black-and-white photocopy, but they honour the originals' forms and intentions, making audible a wide array of individual styles and voices, and a Dutch sensibility that is both familiar and alien to us.' A dual-language edition.

Book Synopsis In a Different Light by : Rob Schouten
Download or read book In a Different Light written by Rob Schouten and published by Seren Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a Different Light is a groundbreaking collection of work by fourteen poets writing in Dutch, many of whom have made continental reputations, yet await discovery by the English-speaking world. And there are fascinating and rewarding discoveries to be made. The tone is often conversational, and imbued with wry humour, but the subjects are the 'big ones' - death , doubt, alienation - examined through minutely altered perspectives. Yet, as Robert Minhinnick notes in his accompanying essay, this is a poetry surprisingly unmoved by nature, by politics, even by war. Instead, for many of the contributors, language itself has become the subject. In a Different Light reveals the essential differences which characterise Dutch language poetry. Intriguing and enjoyable, this anthology is perhaps the best introduction to poetry in Dutch currently available.Edited by Robert Minhinnick and Rob Schouten.Contributors include H.H ter Balkt, Remco Campert, Hugo Claus, J.Eijkelboom, Anna Enquist, Eva Gerlach, Judith Herzberg, Esther Jansma, Rutger Kopland, Gerrit Kouwenaar, K.Michel, Leonard Nolens, Willem van Toorn and Hans R. Vlek.Translated by James Brockway, P.C Evans, Willem Groenewegen, Lloyd Haft, Francis R. Jones, Shirley Kaufman, Graham Martin, Steve Orlen, Craig Raine, John Scott, Mark Strand, Rina Vergano and Paul Vincent.
Book Synopsis The Complete Poems of San Juan de la Cruz by :
Download or read book The Complete Poems of San Juan de la Cruz written by and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1578, during months of imprisonment for his reformist beliefs, San Juan de la Cruz composed a series of narrative poems inspired by the Biblical Song of Songs—and, the story goes, a popular love song overheard from his cramped cell—that take God as the beloved. Erotically charged, initially scandalous, his mystical poetry engages with the journey of the soul through the darkest trenches of suffering and despair toward an enlightened spiritual connection with God. For hundreds of years, these poems have resonated deeply with those who search for meaning in the dark, and have influenced generations of poets, artists, and philosophers. This bilingual edition of the Complete Poems—including “Dark Night” and both the Sanlúcar and Jaén manuscripts of “Spiritual Canticle”—presents an intimate and exceptionally collaborative new translation from María Baranda and Paul Hoover. Baranda, one of the most distinguished Mexican poets of her generation, lends her deft hand with expansive, meditative poetry. Hoover—the accomplished American poet, editor, and translator—offers his dexterity with form and the possibilities of language. The product is uniquely faithful to image and idea, and loyal to the ecstatic lyricism of this canonical text. A volume that hums with the soul’s longing to find solace, The Complete Poems of San Juan de la Cruz is a collection to be treasured.
