Book Synopsis Music Entries at Stationers' Hall, 1710–1818 by : Michael Kassler
Download or read book Music Entries at Stationers' Hall, 1710–1818 written by Michael Kassler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Copyright Act of 1709 protected proprietors of books and music printed after 10 April 1710 who gave copies to the Company of Stationers in London. Upon receipt of a copy, usually within days of its first publication, the Stationers' Hall warehouse keeper entered details into a register. They included the date of registration, the name of the work's proprietor (its author or, if copyright had been transferred, its publisher), and the work's full title, which normally named the composer and the writer of any text and often named the work's performers and dedicatee. Although some publishers put the words 'Entered at Stationers' Hall' on title-pages without actually depositing copies, the information in the registers about the many works that were registered has significant bibliographic value. Because the music entries have not previously been printed and access to them has been difficult, they generally have been ignored by cataloguers and scholars, with the consequence that numerous musical works of this period have been misdated in libraries and reference books. This book makes available, for the first time, the full text of the music entries at Stationers' Hall from 1710 to 1810 and abbreviated details of works entered from 1811 to 1818. Its value is enhanced by the inclusion of locations of copies of most works, together with indexes of composers, authors, performers and dedicatees, and an explanatory introduction by the compiler.

Download or read book Some Other Note written by Ross W. Duffin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English comedy from the fifteenth to the early seventeenth century abounds in song lyrics, but most of the original tunes were thought to have been lost--until now. By deducing that playwrights borrowed melodies from songs they already knew, Ross W. Duffin has used the existing English repertory of songs, both popular and composed, to reconstruct hundreds of songs from more than a hundred plays and other stage entertainments. Thanks to Duffin's incredible breakthrough, these plays have been rendered performable with period music for the first time in five hundred years. Some Other Note not only brings these songs back from the dead, but tells a thrilling tale of the investigations that unraveled these centuries-old mysteries.
Book Synopsis Constructing Monsters in Shakespeare's Drama and Early Modern Culture by : Mark Thornton Burnett
Download or read book Constructing Monsters in Shakespeare's Drama and Early Modern Culture written by Mark Thornton Burnett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-10-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constructing 'Monsters' in Shakespearean Drama and Early Modern Culture argues for the crucial place of the 'monster' in the early modern imagination. Burnett traces the metaphorical significance of 'monstrous' forms across a range of early modern exhibition spaces - fairground displays, 'cabinets of curiosity' and court entertainments - to contend that the 'monster' finds its most intriguing manifestation in the investments and practices of contemporary theatre. The study's new readings of Shakespeare, Marlowe and Jonson make a powerful case for the drama's contribution to debates about the 'extraordinary body'.
Book Synopsis Introductions, Notes and Commentaries to Texts in ' The Dramatic Works of Thomas Dekker ' by : Cyrus Hoy
Download or read book Introductions, Notes and Commentaries to Texts in ' The Dramatic Works of Thomas Dekker ' written by Cyrus Hoy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four of the plays in this volume are based on important source materials, so that the relationship of plays to sources looms large in Cyrus Hoy's introductory essays. There is an extensive account of the relation of The Shoemakers' Holiday to Deloney's Gentle Craft. The Introduction to Old Fortunatus relates in detail that play's relationship to the German Volksbuch, and to the German Comoedia von Fortunate und seinem Seckel und Wünschhütlein (1620), a redaction of Dekker's play. The Introduction to Patient Grissil relates Dekker, Chettle and Haughton's play to the tradition of the Griselda story generally. The chronicle-history sources (Foxe, Grafton, Stow, Holinshed) of Sir Thomas Wyatt are surveyed in the Introduction, in his Introduction also, Professor Hoy considers the play's relationship to the lost play, Lady Jane, by Dekker, Chettle, Heywood, Webster and W. Smith. Satiromastix has no known source, but as Dekker's contribution to the stage quarrel of Marston and Jonson, this is a play that has always had particular interest for the student of Elizabethan theatrical history, and Professor Hoy therefore bestows on it the most elaborate Commentary in all these four volumes.

Download or read book Emblematic Monsters written by A.W. Bates and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early modern Europe, monstrous births were significant events that were seen alive by many people, and dissected, embalmed and collected after death. Emblematic Monsters is a social history of monstrous births as seen through popular print, scholarly books and the proceedings of learned societies. Representations of monsters are considered in the context of their roles as wonders and emblems, and studies of the anatomy of monsters are discussed along with contemporary theories of their origin. By approaching accounts of monstrous births not only as a literary form but also as descriptions of real-life cases, similarities between the pre-scientific recording of wonders and the scientific case report can be explored. Most impressively, A.W. Bates draws upon his own experience of diagnosis of birth defects to summarise more than two hundred original descriptions of monstrous births and compare them with modern diagnostic categories. Emblematic Monsters is an up-to-date approach to a classical yet under-explored subject: gruesome, compelling and monstrous.
