Book excerpt: Within bilingual education, more and more programs are adopting the option of immersion education, in which a second language is used as the medium of instruction. This volume illustrates the implementation immersion education in North America, Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa, showing its use in programs ranging from preprimary to tertiary level and demonstrating how it can function in foreign language teaching, for teaching a minority language to members of the language majority, for reviving or supporting languages at risk of extinction, and for helping learners acquire a language needed for wider communication or career advancement. A final section reviews lessons learned from experiences with immersion and explores new directions the approach is taking. This text will be of interest to teachers, teacher educators, and others involved in bilingual education.

Since the creation of the state agency CODOFIL (Council for the Development of French in Louisiana) in the 1960's, efforts have been made to revitalize French in Louisiana, and since the 1980's, some parishes have offered public school French immersion programs. Very little research, however, has documented the variety of French that students of these programs speak. This dissertation adds to current knowledge by presenting a linguistic analysis of empirical research data collected through oral interviews with 8th grade French immersion subjects from Lafayette Parish and Assumption Parish, Louisiana. Subjects' oral production is analyzed for specific lexical, phonological, morphosyntactic and sociolinguistic variants to determine if the variety they speak is characteristic of Louisiana Regional French (LRF) or of Referential ("Standard") French (RF). A written word-recognition task was used to uncover any gaps between subjects' knowledge (competence) and production (performance), and a sociolinguistic questionnaire sheds light upon subjects' family language backgrounds, attitudes towards French immersion, and attitudes towards LRF. The linguistic analysis shows that French immersion students in Louisiana speak a variety of RF characterized by interlanguage learner forms and, in a few cases, by specific LRF variants. Although these LRF variants can largely be explained by individual subject motivation or by overlap with learner forms, a few of the LRF variants are limited geographically to one of the parishes under study and/or appear to be influenced by LRF in the community. The study results are compared with similar studies of French immersion students in Canada; Louisiana students are shown to prefer vernacular, learner forms or English code-switches in comparison to Canadian subjects' preference for formal (non-vernacular) forms. This study shows that, overall, French immersion education in Louisiana is not contributing to the maintenance of endangered varieties of LRF, but is instead creating a new generation of Louisiana Francophones who speak a variety of Referential French.

Book excerpt: The body of research in this volume offers a detailed account of the success of young immersion learners of Irish in becoming competent speakers of the minority language. Taking account of in-class and out-of-class factors, it examines the variety of Irish spoken by the pupils, the extent to which the Irish spoken deviates from native-speaker norms, the degree to which pupils are aware of and attempt to acquire a native-like variety and the extent to which issues of identity and motivation are involved. The results highlight the limitations of an immersion system in generating active and accurate users of the language outside the immersion setting and will help immersion educators to gain a greater understanding of how young immersion learners learn and acquire the target language. The findings are placed in the context of other one-way immersion programmes internationally with a particular focus on minority language settings, and make an important contribution not only to our understanding of the Irish issues, but how the Irish situation can be placed in a broader scholarly and socio-political context.

The volume covers topics from early to late language development, its interaction with literacy practices, including several languages, monolingual and multilingual contexts, different scripts, as well as typical and atypical development. Inspired by the work of Liliana Tolchinsky, a leading expert in language and literacy development, a group of internationally renowned scholars offers a state-of-the-art overview of current thinking in language development in literate societies in its broadest sense. Contributors offer a personal tribute to Liliana Tolchinsky in the opening section.

Book excerpt: This mixed methods study examines the difference in high school foreign language learners' acquisition of French oral proficiency skills by types of task. This study also examines the roles of the student learners and the teacher in developing oral proficiency skills during two different types of tasks in the high school foreign language classroom, namely the power of the social interactions between learner groups and between learners and teacher in developing oral proficiency. Over the course of an eight-week unit of study, three participating French 2 classes and one participating French teacher completed a prescribed series of speaking tasks. Class one completed only information gap tasks. Class two completed only dictogloss tasks. Class three alternated each task types every other week. Learner pre- and post-test scores were collected from the World Languages Department's speaking test for the unit. ANOVA was conducted using the quantitative data collected. While no significant differences were present between classes, qualitative findings indicate that the learners and the teacher have created powerful constructs of learning and that students were able to progress conversational skills across a unit of study. Teacher interviews, classroom observations, and video transcripts display the scaffolding of learning inside the classroom and lend insight to the roles of the learners and the teacher in the development of high school foreign language learner oral proficiency skills. The findings of the study suggest that the tasks, implemented through social interactions in the classroom, and constructed by the teacher's purposeful design, support foreign language learner oral proficiency development. The manner in which the participating teacher in this study implemented the taught curriculum demonstrates the influence of scaffolding, support systems, and the ability of learners to take ownership over their learning.

Book excerpt: The Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is an assessment of second language oral proficiency administered by the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (NB-EECD) for students enrolled in French second language (FSL) programs, including French immersion (FI). OPI results for 2018-2019 indicate that approximately one-half of Grade 12 early French immersion (EFI) students reached the provincially-set target of Advanced oral proficiency. Another large percentage - 33.5% - reached the Intermediate Plus level, meaning that they possessed many characteristics of Advanced speakers but could not sustain this kind of oral competence throughout the interview. Similar results have been consistently reported over many years of testing using the OPI (NB-EECD, 2019b). This qualitative research of Grade-1-entry-point EFI students' performance on the OPI, through detailed discourse analysis of OPI interviews retrieved from the NB-EECD, illustrates the discursive strengths and limitations of student performance on interviews rated at the Intermediate Plus (N=3) and Advanced (N=3) levels of oral proficiency. Following Celce-Murcia's theory of communicative competence (2007a), these findings can inform teaching practices favouring a holistic approach to teaching (Celce-Murcia, 2007a; Goh & Burns, 2012; Le Bouthillier, 2018b), narrow the divide between practical and theoretical aspects of language learning and assessment (Council of Europe, 2001), and help deconstruct the assessment criteria to guide student discourse toward a higher student achievement at the Advanced level.
