Book excerpt: The existence of superluminal and negative group velocities has been recognized and studied in both the theoretical and experimental domains for many years. This thesis examines the closely-related phenomenon of negative group delay (NGD) in passive and active electronic media. A passive NGD structure operating close to 1.3 GHz generated negative group delays of 20% of the input pulse width for a device with three loading stages, but exhibited losses of 20 dB in the NGD band. These high losses motivated the design and construction of an active NGD circuit. A mathematical and geometrical analysis of the transfer function determined the necessary conditions for NGD and gain. The chosen transfer function was implemented for operation at 15 kHz, and was simulated and measured in the frequency and time domains. Experimental NGDs of 19% of the input pulse width were achieved for three stages of circuit, with unity gain.

The NGD concept is a recent topic in electrical and electronic engineering research based on an unconventional function; the generation of an output signal seemingly in time-advance of the input signal.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The characteristic of group delay is analyzed based on an electronic circuit, and its time-domain nature is studied with time-domain simulation and experiment. The time-domain simulations and experimental results show that group delay is the delay of the energy center of the amplitude-modulated pulse, rather than the propagation delay of the electromagnetic field. As group velocity originates from the definition of group delay and group delay is different from the propagation delay, the superluminality or negativity of group velocity does not mean the superluminal or negative propagation of the electromagnetic field.

Book excerpt: In electronic circuit and system design, the word noise is used to refer to any undesired excitation on the system. In other contexts, noise is also used to refer to signals or excitations which exhibit chaotic or random behavior. The source of noise can be either internal or external to the system. For instance, the thermal and shot noise generated within integrated circuit devices are in ternal noise sources, and the noise picked up from the environment through electromagnetic interference is an external one. Electromagnetic interference can also occur between different components of the same system. In integrated circuits (Ies), signals in one part of the system can propagate to the other parts of the same system through electromagnetic coupling, power supply lines and the Ie substrate. For instance, in a mixed-signal Ie, the switching activity in the digital parts of the circuit can adversely affect the performance of the analog section of the circuit by traveling through the power supply lines and the substrate. Prediction of the effect of these noise sources on the performance of an electronic system is called noise analysis or noise simulation. A methodology for the noise analysis or simulation of an electronic system usually has the following four components: 2 NOISE IN NONLINEAR ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS • Mathematical representations or models for the noise sources. • Mathematical model or representation for the system that is under the in fluence of the noise sources.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of wave propagation in media with negative index of refraction is analyzed through analytical calculations, simulations, and experiments. For passive media, the circumstances under which the real part of the index can be negative are investigated. Several models for media exhibiting negative refractive index are studied and the transmission characteristics of these media are calculated analytically. It is shown that these models suggest the existence of abnormal group velocity and abnormal group delay bands. Furthermore, the presence of abnormal group delay behavior in several existing Left-Handed Media (LHM) is discovered and analyzed using full wave simulations. Using a free space setup, the transmission characteristics of two split ring resonator and strip wire LHM, designed for operation at K-band frequencies (18--26GHz), are measured. The first LHM, which is 3 unit cells long in the propagation direction, exhibits a maximum negative group delay of -0.9ns whereas the second LHM (4 unit cells long) exhibits a maximum negative group delay of -1.2ns. For both LHM the bandwidth of the negative group delay region was approximately 250MHz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a novel, less classical approach to the subject, the authors have written a book with the conviction that signal processing should be taught to be fun. The treatment is therefore less focused on the mathematics and more on the conceptual aspects, the idea being to allow the readers to think about the subject at a higher conceptual level, thus building the foundations for more advanced topics. The book remains an engineering text, with the goal of helping students solve real-world problems. In this vein, the last chapter pulls together the individual topics as discussed throughout the book into an in-depth look at the development of an end-to-end communication system, namely, a modem for communicating digital information over an analog channel.

The most wonderful feature is its efficient style of exposition ... an excellent book." Physics Today "Presents the theoretical derivations carefully and in detail and gives thorough discussions of the experimental results it presents. This makes it an excellent textbook both for learners and for more experienced researchers wishing to check facts. I have enjoyed reading it and strongly recommend it as a text for anyone working with semiconductors ... I know of no better text ... I am sure most semiconductor physicists will find this book useful and I recommend it to them." Contemporary Physics Offers much new material: an extensive appendix about the important and by now well-established, deep center known as the DX center, additional problems and the solutions to over fifty of the problems at the end of the various chapters.

It equally allows precise measurements of other physical and technical quantities, whenever they can be measured in terms of frequency. This volume covers the central methods and techniques relevant for frequency standards developed in physics, electronics, quantum electronics, and statistics. After a review of the basic principles, the book looks at the realisation of commonly used components. It then continues with the description and characterisation of important frequency standards from atomic clocks, to frequency stabilised lasers. The whole is rounded of with a discussion of topical applications in engineering, telecommunications, and metrology.
