Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mastery learning on sophomore level high school students enrolled in a regular level biology course. The study was conducted in April 1996 at Cary-Grove High School, part of Community High School District #155, Crystal Lake, Illinois. The students who participated generally ranked in the top 60th percentile of their class, and based upon this they were placed in this regular level course. The study assesses the effects of mastery learning in two different outcomes, student achievement and student affect. Student achievement was evaluated using a ninety-five question forced choice test that was written by the biology teaching staff at Cary-Grove as a part of the School Improvement Process requirements of the State of Illinois. The test was designed to align with both the goals of the state and the curriculum that has been implemented at Cary-Grove. Student affects was evaluated using a five question student survey that assessed students perception of the course, their attitude toward the subject that they were learning, how important they felt the subject was and how fairly they perceived their work as being evaluated. The results of this study indicated that the mastery learning approach did have a significant effect on the students who were being taught using the method. The test was divided into eleven different topics, and the students who were in the classes where the mastery approach was being used performed better in nine of the areas as opposed to the students who were in the classes where mastery learning had not been used. The results also indicated that mastery learning did appear to have a cumulative effect, with greater results being seen in the second semester topics as opposed to the first semester topics. Mastery learning also appeared to have a positive effect on student affect. The results of the survey found that the students who were taught using the mastery application reported more often than the students were not taught using mastery that they had control over their learning, that there were high expectations for their success, and that the subject they were learning was important."--Author's abstract.

Book excerpt: Because the organization of the classroom and the school provide the framework for teaching and learning, this important volume reviews research that focuses on specific issues including: achievement effects of alternative school and classroom organizational practices, ability grouping, departmentalization, special and remedial programs, evaluation processes, and class size. The studies utilize realistic evaluations rather than laboratory or experimental data, and do not prescribe particular practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study reviewed in this paper examined the effects of "mastery learning" and "student team learning" on the math achievement of high school students. The analysis included 588 ninth-grade students in 16 urban Philadelphia high schools. The study assessed the effectiveness of the different conditions after one year by comparing student performance on a shortened version of the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS), Mathematics Computations and Concepts and Applications subscales. The study found, and the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) confirmed, a statistically significant positive effect on math achievement for students in "team learning" (i.e., the combined "Teams and Teams-and-Mastery" groups) compared with those not in "team learning" (i.e., the combined "Focused Instruction" and "Mastery" groups). The study found, and the WWC confirmed, no statistically significant effects on math achievement for students using "mastery learning" (i.e., the combined "Mastery" and "Teams-and-Mastery" groups) compared with those not using "mastery learning" ( i.e., the combined "Focused Instruction" and "Teams" groups). Finally, the study showed no significant differences among any of the individual groups in the study (for example, "Teams" only vs. "Teams-and-Mastery"). The research described in this report meets WWC evidence standards with reservations. Appended are: (1) Study details; (2) Outcome measure for the mathematics achievement domain; (3) Study findings for the mathematics achievement domain; and (4) Supplemental findings for the mathematics achievement domain. A glossary of terms is included. (Contains 2 endnotes.).

Book excerpt: During the past quarter century, over 1000 articles have documented changes in student behaviors related to participation in mastery learning programs. Although the results have been generally positive, a debate continues as to the cause for increased student performance: Are results due to changes in how students attend to the information, or simply due to increased study time as a result of remediation? In this study, a videodisc-based program in fractions was used with fifth-grade students. The videodisc-based instruction was chosen to help minimize differences in instructional materials, instructional time, and instructional delivery. A pretest-posttest, control-group design was used to compare academic achievement, locus of control, and goal setting scores of two groups (N=154). Both groups received instruction in fractions via the teacher-directed, videodisc-based Mastering Fractions program. Treatment 1 students (N=80) were knowledgeable that they were participating in a mastery-learning program and would be held accountable for their progress and remediation. Treatment 2 students (N=74) were not aware that their teacher was using mastery learning principles to determine progression and remediation. A control group (N=32) received their normal grade five mathematics program. Comparisons between Treatment 1 and Treatment 2 student scores, after adjustments for pretest results using analysis of covariance, revealed standardized mean difference effect sizes of +0.03 for achievement, +0.32 for locus-of-control, and +0.46 for goal setting mean scores favoring Treatment 1. A discrepancy in implementation of the videodisc program in two classes may have skewed results. When data from these two classes were omitted, the analyses showed adjusted standardized mean difference effect sizes of +0.63 for achievement, +0.75 for locus-of-control, and +0.55 for goal setting mean scores favoring Treatment 1. A two-way analysis of covariance with treatment groups and achievement levels was also conducted. Subsequent standardized mean difference effect sizes using adjusted mean scores were greatest for students from the lowest achievement level (+0.64 for internal locus-of-control and +0.55 for goal setting mean scores). When data from the two discrepant classes were omitted, the adjusted standardized mean difference effect sizes were found to be + 1.24 for internal locus-of-control and + 1.06 for goal setting mean scores favoring students from the lowest achievement level. Implications of these results for mastery learning programs in public schools are discussed.
