Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to understand the meaning behind the factors that influenced recruited NCAA Division III female basketball student athletes when choosing which institution to attend. A questionnaire, interview, and focus group were used in this phenomenological study to gather data from ten first year women basketball players at three NCAA Division III institutions located in the Southeast. The students ranked location of college, coaching staff, campus visit, academic reputation and potential playing time as the most popular factors influencing college choice. The crux of this research lies in the relationship between each student athlete and the college coach. Every participant was introduced to their current institution through the women's basketball coach. The influence of the coach, the feeling of the campus, coupled with the financial aid package inspired matriculation to their current institution.

Book excerpt: Abstract The Social Cognitive Career Theory was applied to examine how the desire to coach or administrate are impacted by self-efficacy, occupational valence, perceived hindrance, and role model influence. This study was conducted to address the underrepresentation of females in collegiate sports leadership positions. The study examined if being coached by males or if males in leadership positions is preferred. Women coach less than half, (40.2%) of women0́9s sports and women account for 19.6% percent of administrators in college athletic departments. Hypothetically, the results of this study will support and enhance the NCAA college sports model by revealing quantitative data that provide a foundation for understanding the problems and identifying key factors important to the leadership development of female student-athletes. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, MANOVAs, and path analysis. Everhart and Chelladurai (1998) stated that female athletes preferred male coaches and that female athletes that had male coaches were more likely to perceive discrimination as a barrier. The study0́9s finding is that collegiate female student-athletes had a high perception of female coaches and female administrators and a preference for female coaches.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The dearth of women coaches at the college level is an established fact (Acosta & Carpenter, 2002). The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to career longevity for women collegiate coaches of sports traditionally coached by men. A qualitative, multiple case study research design was employed (Merriam, 1998). The interrelationship of individual, structural, and social relations variables (Knoppers, 1992) were used as a theoretical framework. Four female collegiate cross country and track and field coaches at the NCAA division III level served as participants. Participants2 collegiate head coaching experience ranged from 16-26 years. Data collection methods included a life history, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis (Marshall & Rossman, 1995). Each coach was visited three times throughout the course of her competitive season. Total days spent with each coach varied from 7-10. Data analysis consisted of within-case analysis and cross-case analysis (Merriam, 1998). To enhance internal validity, triangulation of data sources, peer debriefing, and member check methods were employed (Merriam, 1998). Career longevity enhancers included occupational socialization, program success, desire to work with athletes, institutional and professional commitment, access to power and resources, and personal and professional support systems primarily out of the workplace. Career challenges included feelings of isolation because of the lack of female coaching peers in their sports, gender harassment, especially early in their careers, and imbalanced coaching loads compared to other coaches at their institution. Further, each coach perceived the coaching profession as being "all-consuming" and made personal sacrifices in fully devoting themselves to the coaching profession. Coaches relied primarily on individual coping mechanisms such as exercise, problem solving abilities and "planned escapes" to confront the challenges. These findings suggest that support networks on multiple levels, success, and personal sacrifices were key factors for these women to persist in a male dominated profession. It is hoped that these findings may assist women who aspire to be career coaches and athletic administrators in their quest to retain women coaches.
