Book excerpt: This study investigated the factors that influence community college students' attitudes toward technology, particularly in teaching and learning experiences. Studies on post-secondary students' attitudes reported in the literature are limited. Factors cited previously as having an effect on attitudes towards technology and toward computers included: gender; age; presence of a computer in the home; completion of a formal technology course; and comfort with technology. The subjects in this study were 372 students in freshman level credit English classes in the five colleges of the North Harris Montgomery Community College District located in the greater metropolitan Houston area. Previous research instruments and studies to measure students' attitudes toward technology were reviewed. A modified version of the Secondary Students Attitudes' Toward Technology (SSATT) was developed for this study because of the content, reliability, and applicability to the post secondary population. The instrument was administered in the spring of 2005. The fact that 95.4% of the participants reported having a computer at home andthat 70.2% reported having had a formal technology class provided insight into the integration of technology in the lives of this community college sample. A correlation matrix of all variables and analysis of variance were performed. Factor analyses were performed to identify subcomponents of the instrument. Eight factors were identified: (1) need for technology competence, (2) technology benefits, (3) negative aspects of technology, (4) technology and the workplace, (5) impact of increased use of technology, (6) video games, (7) technology and job creation, and (8) technology and safety. A conclusion of the study was that neither age nor gender had a significant effecton the post-secondary students' attitudes toward technology, which differs from the findings in some of the previous studies. Females reported being as comfortable, if not more so, with technology in teaching and learning experiences as the males in the study. Exposure to technology, completion of a formal technology class, and the use of computers appeared to positively affect community college students' attitudes toward technology.

Book excerpt: Little is known about student success in online learning environments, especially how the predisposing characteristics that the learner brings to the learning environment may differentially affect student outcomes. This study explored the question of whether a student's "readiness" to be a self-directed learner is a predictor of student success in an online community college curriculum. The specific goal of this investigation was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness-as measured by Guglielmino's (1977) Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS)- and student success-as measured by course completion, grade point average (GPA) and student satisfaction, the latter assessed by student responses to an opinion poll. The subjects of this study were community college students in the state of Washington, enrolled in one or more transfer-level online courses delivered via WashingtonONLINE (WAOL) during fall quarter 1999. Students who voluntarily chose to respond to two elective surveys comprised the study sample. A correlational research design was used to test the explanatory power of self-directed learning readiness and to describe the relationships between variables. Since this study was designed to test hypothesized relationships, the resulting correlation coefficients were interpreted in terms of their statistical significance. The expected outcome of this study was to confirm or disconfirm a statistically significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness and student success in an online community college curriculum. The findings of this study failed to achieve this outcome due to (1) the lack of statistical reliability of the SDLRS among the subject population; (2) the resulting lack of validity of the SDLRS among the study sample; (3) a nonresponse effect; and (4) a self-selection effect. The unanticipated outcome of this study was evidence that student perception of student/instructor interactions is a single variable predictor of student success among community college students in an online learning environment. Recommendations for further study include Web-specific research methodologies that address the potentially deleterious effects of nonresponse and self-selection in cyber-research environments and continued exploration of the multiple facets of student success in asynchronous learning domains.

Book excerpt: The convenience of online programs has revolutionized education to make it available for more people interested in seeking to further their education. Students enrolling into various online, higher education programs have different aptitudes and factors that play a role in their experiences and successful completion of the program. The study aims to determine relationships between factors that may influence the students’ attitudes towards online programs. The factors include reading self-efficacy, ethnicity, and the age of the college students. The present study examines these relationships between self-reported self-efficacy, ethnicity, and age, as related to attitudes toward online learning. The participants consisted of 295 post-secondary students enrolled in online courses. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data and determine which variables had the greatest amount of impact on the students’ attitudes toward online learning. The analysis of the data found a significant relationship between reading self-efficacy and a student’s attitude toward online learning. No statistically significant evidence was found for the relationships between age and ethnicity

Book excerpt: This study investigated how current levels of computer technology competence, confidence, and attitudes of community college students toward technology in learning are affected by current access, demographic characteristics, and past experiences with computer technology. A survey and quantitative analysis were used to examine the interactions of first generation college student status, age, gender, ethnicity, primary language, employment, current income, history of access, and current access to computer and internet technology with computer technology beliefs, troubleshooting confidence, and types of technology use. A subgroup chosen from the survey respondents was interviewed individually to garner more detail and to get a greater sense of the individual perspectives, stories, and narratives of participants regarding their personal experiences that lie behind their answers on the survey. Using an ex post facto factor analysis, the attitudes subscale in the survey was divided into the dependent variables of beliefs and troubleshooting confidence. These dependent variables were measured for impact from the predictor variables of gender, age, ethnicity, first generation college student status, hours worked per week, current income, and history of access variables in multiple regression analyses. Factor analysis and multiple regressions were also used to examine the effects of gender, age, and current income on the current access of participants to computer technology, such as personal or public access to the internet and types of internet access in the form of mobile or immobile access. Finally, factor analysis and multiple regressions were used to examine the effects of gender, age, and current income on the types of computer technology participants used. Results showed no significant effects of any of the selected predictor variables on the beliefs of participants regarding the use of computer technology. Results also showed that females tended to have less confidence when troubleshooting problems encountered while using computer technology than males, regardless of age or income. In terms of access, younger participants reported higher levels of the use of public resources with immobile internet access and more use of laptops with wireless connections. The interview data supported the findings of the factor analyses and multiple regressions. The findings were discussed in terms of the persistence of gender disparities in more complex computer technology tasks and cultural shifts regarding the perception of the ubiquity and necessity of the use of computer technology. These cultural shifts appear to be embraced by younger participants, who seem to be more comfortable with high mobility and the perception that internet can be accessed as a public resource regardless of personal resource constraints.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the use of technology of second year community college students in an effort to determine if access to technology had an influence on student performance. Students were asked to complete a Technology Use Survey to share their computer and technology use. The study measured students' access, experience, and habits. A comparison was made of technology use and student academic performance based on the student's grade point average and social factors such as race and socioeconomic factors.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The rapid decline of information technology majors poses a serious obstacle for the continued innovation and maintenance of the United States information technology infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to explore barriers to course progression of community college information technology Associate of Science degree students. While the research literature contains several studies about the reasons for the sharp decline among four year undergraduate information technology students very little research has examined community college Associate of Science degree student's progress toward the information technology degree. A quantitative study using transcript analysis will be conducted to find relationships between course preparation and degree progression among community college students. In addition, logistical regression will be used to determine factors influencing degree completion among information technology students.
