Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to identify and investigate some limits regarding recent empirical and theoretical contributions in the field of farmers' behavior as related to tea production in Vietnam. Chapter 1 provides a quick overview about tea production in the world and in Vietnam. Chapter 2 in our thesis analyzes the technical efficiency of the tea production in Vietnam. This study finds that the average technical efficiency of tea production is very low (only about 41\%). Chapter 3 presents a theoretical model in order to figure out the farmer's decision to adopt for organic production. The decision concerns the allocation of lands for conventional and organic products.It shows the importance of (i) the available quantity of land devoted to agricultural plants, (ii) the productivity of the organic products, (iii) the incentive mechanism, and finally (iv) the constraints on output of organic products. In Chapter 4, we compared two version of econometric model: a model with household's unobserved heterogeneity and a model without unobserved heterogeneity. We found that the former model is preferred. The results revealed that some important factors which influence the adoption of tea varieties included tea income, presence of elderly, household size and use of organic fertilizers. In Chapter 5, we focus on investigating the impacts of political connections both farmer's total income and tea income. The findings indicate the significant role of political connection on improving farming households' income.

Most of this demand is met by imports from developing countries. This article examines the main factors affecting the choice of farm households to adopt organic tea production in Northern Vietnam. We apply a logit model to survey data from 241 Vietnamese tea farming households. We assess the robustness of the results by addressing three important statistical issues: (i) regressor endogeneity, (ii) unobserved heterogeneity at farm level and (iii) missing values. The main results are chiefly robust and largely in line with the theory. We find that farm households with higher revenues, and located in rich natural and physical environments are significantly more inclined to adopt organic tea production. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that farm households who are consulted by extension agents and belong to a teaassociation increase the odds for the adoption of organic tea cultivation.

More than 1,000 financial institutions (e.g. banks, trusts, donors) and 600 multinational companies have pledged to produce and supply zero-deforestation agricultural products, and these establishments (financial institutions and multinational companies) are developing a process of testing, screening and certification for service providers and countries that produce or export agroforestry products. The governments of European countries, the Americas and Australia are also aggressively building a legal framework to monitor and verify that imported goods have not resulted in deforestation or forest degradation.In Vietnam, 92 domestic and foreign companies from 21 fields and industries have signed commitments to achieve zero deforestation by 2020. These industries include: fashion (apparel and footwear); agriculture; cosmetics and personal care; food and agriculture; retail chains; home construction (furniture and flooring, and renovation supplies); consumer goods; paper and packaging; printing and publishing; and automotive industry (rubber, automobile manufacturing). These companies contribute greatly to the national GDP and local economic development, and are major buyers of agricultural products including coffee, wood, soybeans and poultry.However, businesses in Vietnam are not prepared to adapt the supply chain of agroforestry products to this trend; they require knowledge and skills to face the new market requirements. Without further research and long-term planning, Vietnam's agroforestry products industry is at risk of losing market share to fierce international competition, leading to enormous economic losses for the country.The government needs to develop a legal framework to support and monitor companies that meet deforestation-free commitments, while building the capacity of stakeholders to respond to the requirements of new markets, in order to ensure a solid position for agroforestry products and their sustainable contribution to the national economy over the next 30 years.

Book excerpt: Agricultural production in the face of climate change requires a climate-smart transformation and reorientation at multiple scales. Vietnam is one of the developing countries that is agriculture-based and severely affected by climate change; therefore it is crucial that the agricultural system advances toward this transformation. While climate-smart agriculture has gained a significant attention in global fora, context-specific evidence is still scarce in Vietnam. This study examines climate-smart agriculture potentials in tea production systems in the northern mountainous region of Vietnam. Since the climate-smart agriculture concept is multidimensional, which includes food security and adaptation and mitigation, an interdisciplinary analytical framework is employed in this research to assess the economic and biophysical dimensions. Enterprise budgets and representative farms (i.e., farms or households having one or more activities or enterprises) are developed for tea and alternative crops, as well as livestock production, to analyze the productivity dimension of food security. In evaluating the adaptation potential of tea production, local farmers' perceptions and experiences of extreme weather events are combined with ERA-Interim data (1989-2013) and household survey data on income levels (reanalysis dataset taken from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts; ERA stands for ECMWF Reanalysis). Greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration potentials are estimated through partial Carbon Footprint Life Cycle Assessment. Results show that tea production systems generate net margins, returns to capital, and family labor higher than the alternatives. Farmers, therefore, have high incentives to switch from other crops to tea production. In the face of climate change, tea has shown a strong biophysical adaptive capacity compared to other crops in the northern mountainous region. Tea production systems have a high capability for carbon storage. Evidence of strong synergies between food security and mitigation and adaptation is demonstrated for tea production systems in the northern mountainous region, and potential tradeoffs were highlighted, where relevant.

Moreover, the tea industry which is also one of the potential industries would increase a quantity (low tea yields), a quality (due to low quality of tea) and a selling price when the tea quality increases, the type of tea is increasing, then the price increases. Because tea plays the important role as one of Vietnam's important export agricultural products, it is definitely necessary for research investment to develop policies and solutions for developing the value chain of tea and increasing the added value of tea, particularly in intense competition of the world tea market where the demand for this product is decreasing due to the global economic crisis, and the number of suppliers participating in the tea market is increasing and becoming more and more professional. This article confirms that the development of tea export market of Vietnam is a right direction. The article shows that enhancing the value chain of tea industry is one of the factors promoting the development of the Vietnam tea market during the period of international integration. The paper, thence, proposes some solutions to develop the tea market Vietnam in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three chapters. Each chapter is a study that I have conducted during my time at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The common theme of these chapters is measuring the socioeconomic impacts of spatially distributed shocks with a focus on environmental disasters. The first chapter studies the legacy of herbicidal warfare deployed during the Second Indochina War on exposed communities. The second chapter documents the contemporary changes in earnings and employment of affected saltwater fishers after the 2016 Vietnam Marine Life Disaster. The third chapter explains models using distance to geographical objects as an instrumental variable, a popular method in applied microeconomics.In the first chapter, I estimate the persistent health effects of exposure to dioxin (2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) from the Second Indochina War on exposed communities. During the war, the US military sprayed about 20 million gallons of herbicides for defoliation and crop destruction. About two-thirds of the herbicides were Agent Orange, which contained dioxin. Exploiting the concealment of the information on dioxin contamination from the general public by herbicide producers, I compare the effects of dioxin-contaminated and dioxin-free herbicides that had similar functions and find that highly exposed communities still exhibit worse health outcomes than lightly exposed communities. I also find that human capital accumulation, labor outcomes, and economic activities are negatively associated with dioxin exposure. Even though herbicidal warfare was unique to the Second Indochina War, the insight from this paper spreads beyond this context, because i) there are similar situations, such as the military burn pits in US military bases in the Middle East, and ii) dioxin and dioxin-alike chemicals could come from industrial sources. The second chapter is the result of my collaboration with Trung Hoang, Duong Le, and Ha Nguyen, in which each of us contributed equally to conceptualization, data analysis, writing, and editing. This project analyzes the impacts of the 2016 Vietnam Marine Life Disaster, referred to as the Formosa disaster in the chapter. In April 2016, pollution from the Formosa steel plant caused mass fish deaths to wash ashore in four provinces in central Vietnam, including Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue. Applying the difference-in-difference method, we studied the impacts on the local saltwater fishery industry and the coping mechanisms of affected fishers using two control groups. The geographic control group consists of fishers in unaffected provinces from Phu Yen to the south. The industry control group consists of workers in unaffected industries, including manufacturing, construction, and retail, who reside in the four affected provinces. The estimation results show a heterogeneous change in fishing activities and the employment and income of fishers after the event. The impacts hit downstream provinces, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue, harder than upstream provinces, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh. Satellite data suggest that the affected upstream fishers traveled north to unaffected waters to continue fishing, explaining the lessened impact on them. We published these results in the Journal of Development Economics. The third chapter focuses on models using distance to geographical objects as an instrumental variable. Many applied microeconomics papers employ this method to estimate the long-term socioeconomic impacts of historical or contemporary shocks, which may include environmental disasters. A common argument for instrument validity is the exogeneity of instrumented geographical objects. However, the analysis reveals that an IV model divides the sample into two groups based on the residual of regressing the geographic distance IV on covariates: observations with positive residuals versus negative residuals. Within each subsample, the model assigns more weight to observations with higher absolute values of the residual linearly. Since a geographical distance IV model involves a mechanical comparison between two specific groups of locations, defending the instrument validity requires background information on related areas. The third chapter is the result of an ongoing research project. During the first and second years of my Ph.D. studies, I worked to address the impacts of a newly built Ho Chi Minh Highway on local communities and deforestation. The chosen method involved using the distance to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the military trail used by the North Vietnamese Army during the Second Indochina War, as an instrumental variable. However, I had to delay this project because I realized that I did not fully understand the method. This chapter provides the answers I wish I had known, and I believe it will benefit other researchers in similar situations.

By reviewing its principles and practices, we demonstrate that Fair-Trade is the power of or more precisely the influence of 'soft power' of the informal institutions which supplement the law and provisions of the government in developing countries to overcome the failures of Free-Trade and to promote green/sustainable economic development. We use the case study of Organic Shan Tee - Van Chan (within 4 communes of Yen Bai provinces) to provide an overview of the status of Fair-trade participation as well as its benefits that people earn in the northern provinces of Vietnam. We found that although strong commitment now involved in Fair-trade among regional cooperatives and people's participation but there are still some problem of collective action and market inefficiency that create obstacles for their business. Thus the paper boldly proposes a number of policy and practical recommendations to help organic cooperative Shan Tee - Van Chan (Yen Bai) in particular and all agricultural sector of Vietnam generally easy to participate into Fair-Trade as well as promote 'maximum benefits' that Fair- trade offers.
