Book excerpt: This analysis evaluates CSP with TES in a scenario where California derives 33% of its electricity from renewable energy sources. It uses a commercial grid simulation tool to examine the avoided operational and capacity costs associated with CSP and compares this value to PV and a baseload generation with constant output. Overall, the analysis demonstrates several properties of dispatchable CSP, including the flexibility to generate during periods of high value and avoid generation during periods of lower value. Of note in this analysis is the fact that significant amount of operational value is derived from the provision of reserves in the case where CSP is allowed to provide these services. This analysis also indicates that the 'optimal' configuration of CSP could vary as a function of renewable penetration, and each configuration will need to be evaluated in terms of its ability to provide dispatchable energy, reserves, and firm capacity. The model can be used to investigate additional scenarios involving alternative technology options and generation mixes, applying these scenarios within California or in other regions of interest.

Book excerpt: Evolution and Trends of Sustainable Approaches: Latest Development and Innovations in Science and Technology Applications provides different trends and approaches within the sustainability framework to assess their impact and offer possible solutions to problems facing the global sustainability paradigm. This book evaluates sustainability assessment approaches which support different levels of both decision-making and policy processes, thereby improving the management of natural and human systems. This book explores sustainable firm solutions, the upward trend of sustainability, and its variants. At the same time, different existing approaches are analyzed. These sustainable assessment approaches can be applied to products, services and technologies as well as business models, such as the Product-Service-System (PSS), Circular Economy (CE), Industrial Symbiosis (IS), and Supply Chain (SC). Finally, the book explores Sustainability Indicators (SIs), which are widely used to measure and communicate progress towards sustainable development, along with Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA), balancing the three dimensions of sustainability (environmental, social and economic). - Explores innovative strategies and advanced trends of sustainable approaches, engineering, and industrial applications - Analyzes sustainability assessments and their role in planning and project processes - Reviews state-of-the-art sustainable technologies - Evaluates approaches for organizations to achieve both sustainability assessment and sustainable solutions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of a flexible, efficient, digitized, dependable and resilient power grid may well be the best route to increasing energy efficiency & security, as well as boosting the potential of renewable & distributed power sources. However, there is still much confusion about the nature of the Smart Grid: What is it? What work needs to be accomplished in order to make it a reality? How will it benefit the drive to diversify energy resources? This book covers Smart Grids from A-Z, providing a complete treatment of the topic, covering both policy and technology, explaining the most recent innovations supporting its development, and clarifying how the Smart Grid can support the integration of Renewable Energy resources. Among the most important topics included are smart metering, renewable energy storage, plug-in hybrids, flexible demand response, strategies for offsetting intermittency issues, micro-grids for off-grid communities, and specific in-depth coverage of wind and solar power integration. The content draws lessons from an international panel of contributors, whose diverse experiences implementing smart grids will help to provide templates for success. If we intend to undertake a meaningful overhaul of the way the world uses energy resources, we ignore grid management issues at our peril. Ultimately, this important book examines what the integration challenges are, what technology and policy needs to be in place in order to support uptake, and what The Smart Grid can do to enable solutions. Provides critical information on the technological, design and policy issues that must be taken into account to ensure that the smart grid is implemented successfully Demonstrates how smart grids can help utilities adhere to increased renewable portfolio standards Provides examples of successful microgrid/smart metering projects from around the world that can act as templates for developers, operators and investors embarking upon similar projects.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating solar power (CSP) deployed with thermal energy storage (TES) provides a dispatchable source of renewable energy. The value of CSP with TES, as with other potential generation resources, needs to be established using traditional utility planning tools. Production cost models, which simulate the operation of grid, are often used to estimate the operational value of differentgeneration mixes. CSP with TES has historically had limited analysis in commercial production simulations. This document describes the implementation of CSP with TES in a commercial production cost model. It also describes the simulation of grid operations with CSP in a test system consisting of two balancing areas located primarily in Colorado.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within this study, we evaluate the operational and capacity value--or total system value--for multiple concentrating solar power (CSP) plant configurations under an assumed 33% renewable penetration scenario in California. We calculate the first-year bid price for two CSP plants, including a 2013 molten-salt tower integrated with a conventional Rankine cycle and a hypothetical 2020 molten-salt tower system integrated with an advanced supercritical carbon-dioxide power block. The overall benefit to the regional grid, defined in this study as the net value, is calculated by subtracting the first-year bid price from the total system value.
