Book excerpt: Next day, Mr. Vivian called on me at the Oxford and Cambridge, the address on the card I had given his daughter. I was in the club when he called, and I found him a pleasant, good-natured Cornishman, with very little that was strange or romantic in any way about him. He thanked me heartily, but not too effusively, for the care I had taken of Miss Vivian overnight; and he was not so overcome with parental emotion as not to smoke a very good Havana, or to refuse my offer of a brandy and seltzer. We got on very well together, and I soon gathered from what my new acquaintance said that, though he belonged to one of the best families in Cornwall, he had been an English merchant in Haiti, and had made his money chiefly in the coffee trade. He was a widower, I learned incidentally, and his daughters had been brought up for some years in England, though at their mother's request they had also passed part of their lives in convent schools in Paris and Rouen. "Mrs. Vivian was a Haitian, you know," he said casually: "Catholic of course. The girls are Catholics. They're good girls, though they're my own daughters; and Césarine, your friend of last night, is supposed to be clever. I'm no judge myself: I don't know about it. Oh, by the way, Césarine said she hadn't thanked you half enough herself yesterday, and I was to be sure and bring you round this afternoon to a cup of tea with us at Seymour Crescent." In spite of the impression Mdlle. Césarine had made upon me the night before, I somehow didn't feel at all desirous of meeting her again. I was impressed, it is true, but not favourably. There seemed to me something uncanny and weird about her which made me shrink from seeing anything more of her if I could possibly avoid it. And as it happened, I was luckily engaged that very afternoon to tea at Irene's. I made the excuse, and added somewhat pointedly—on purpose that it might be repeated to Mdlle. Césarine—"Miss Latham is a very old and particular friend of mine—a friend whom I couldn't for worlds think of disappointing."...

Book Synopsis Almost Alcoholic by : Joseph Nowinski
Download or read book Almost Alcoholic written by Joseph Nowinski and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determine if your drinking is a problem, develop strategies for curbing your intake, and measure your progress with this practical, engaging guide to taking care of yourself. Every day, millions of people drink a beer or two while watching a game, shake a cocktail at a party with friends, or enjoy a glass of wine with a good meal. For more than 30 percent of these drinkers, alcohol has begun to have a negative impact on their everyday lives. Yet, only a small number are true alcoholics--people who have completely lost control over their drinking and who need alcohol to function. The great majority are what Dr. Doyle and Dr. Nowinski call "Almost Alcoholics," a growing number of people whose excessive drinking contributes to a variety of problems in their lives. In Almost Alcoholic, Dr. Doyle and Dr. Nowinski give the facts and guidance needed to address this often unrecognized and devastating condition. They provide the tools to: identify and assess your patterns of alcohol use; evaluate its impact on your relationships, work, and personal well-being; develop strategies and goals for changing the amount and frequency of alcohol use; measure the results of applying these strategies; and make informed decisions about your next steps.

Book excerpt: Remarkable scientific research, mapping the human genome, reveals how similar we all are to each other. Only a tiny fraction of difference separates us one from another. Each of us says "Hello" to our individual experience here on earth, and each of us will ultimately and assuredly say "Goodbye." Between those landmark events in our lives, there are all kinds and types of "Hellos" and "Goodbyes," some happy; some sad; some funny-and all part of the amazing school called life. This book awakens us to both the glitter, and sometimes the gloom, that life presents on an almost daily basis. It awakens a realization that life is truly important and meaningful, and that each day is a gift to be opened and treasured.

Download or read book All-That-Is Waving in Resonance with the Vibes written by Llan Starkweather and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibrational energies of earth harmonically support the electromagnetic force of all living things and the game we play of reality. Holographic and quantum theory affirm that the observer and the observed are one: the body is actually blinking on and off and is sensitive to the entire range of electromagnetic frequencies. While technology in the hands of a secret government, with its overt and covert hold on minds and bodies, is careening down the telescoping aisle of time, it is accompanied by a tremendous acceleration of possible consciousness toward Knowing that the reality that we intend for ourselves is indeed tentatively located in but a few grids within the holographic infinity that Matters, the All-That-Is: by our pranic energy there manifest we yet create our own reality. This book is a piece of the ever-growing network of dissent urgently seeking a window denied by all media to a consciousness of compassion for All-That-Is. Global agony comes to dominate a book about earth and human energies.
