Book Synopsis Chase for Cocaine’s High at All Time Low by : Tommy Khoa Dang Lieu
Download or read book Chase for Cocaine’s High at All Time Low written by Tommy Khoa Dang Lieu and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law enforcement around the world have put a strangle-hold on the cocaine industry. As a result, drastic changes in the potency and physical properties of the cocaine available in the eastern Canadian market have occurred over the past 25+ years. Not only have there been changes to the drug itself, but these changes have also resulted in transformation of the behaviour of users and the areas of Toronto (and other major world cities) affected by cocaine trafficking and use. The bottom line? The cocaine available today is measurably less potent and of a far lesser quality than that available in the past. And this deterioration is only going to continue, as global trends suggest that it will be next to impossible to produce cocaine of the same potency as 25 years ago, particularly due to the success and progress of law enforcement across the globe. Tommy Khoa Dang Lieu chronicles his experiences in the cocaine and drug trade, weaving a compelling argument that combines lived experience with hard data to paint a picture of the decline of the once-lucrative cocaine industry.

Book Synopsis The Music of James Bond by : Jon Burlingame
Download or read book The Music of James Bond written by Jon Burlingame and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the music that accompanies the cinematic adventures of Ian Fleming's intrepid Agent 007 is one of surprising real-life drama. In The Music of James Bond, author Jon Burlingame throws open studio and courtroom doors alike to reveal the full and extraordinary history of the sounds of James Bond, spicing the story with a wealth of fascinating and previously undisclosed tales. Burlingame devotes a chapter to each Bond film, providing the backstory for the music (including a reader-friendly analysis of each score) from the last-minute creation of the now-famous "James Bond Theme" in Dr. No to John Barry's trend-setting early scores for such films as Goldfinger and Thunderball. We learn how synthesizers, disco and modern electronica techniques played a role in subsequent scores, and how composer David Arnold reinvented the Bond sound for the 1990s and beyond. The book brims with behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Burlingame examines the decades-long controversy over authorship of the Bond theme; how Frank Sinatra almost sang the title song for Moonraker; and how top artists like Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Duran Duran, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, and Madonna turned Bond songs into chart-topping hits. The author shares the untold stories of how Eric Clapton played guitar for Licence to Kill but saw his work shelved, and how Amy Winehouse very nearly co-wrote and sang the theme for Quantum of Solace. New interviews with many Bond songwriters and composers, coupled with extensive research as well as fascinating and previously undiscovered details--temperamental artists, unexpected hits, and the convergence of great music and unforgettable imagery--make The Music of James Bond a must read for 007 buffs and all popular music fans. This paperback edition is brought up-to-date with a new chapter on Skyfall.

Book Synopsis The Retention of First Year Black Male Students at Predominately White Private and Public Universities and Colleges by : Dr. Sandy Woodrow Yancy, Sr.
Download or read book The Retention of First Year Black Male Students at Predominately White Private and Public Universities and Colleges written by Dr. Sandy Woodrow Yancy, Sr. and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his dissertation research, The Retention of First-Year Black Male Students at Predominately White Private and Public Universities and Colleges provides evidence that the retention of first-year Black male students at predominately White private or public universities and colleges can be achieved. Using the experiences of six participants at a predominately White private university in the Washington, D.C. area, the book encourages Black male high school graduates who want to attend predominately White private or public universities or colleges to use those participants’ experiences—specifically the key factors that contributed to their academic success—in obtaining their college degrees. Educated Black men tend to improve their communities, provide financially for their families, enjoy higher self-esteem, and become valuable assets to their employers, perhaps even becoming business owners. Today, African-American enrollment in higher education is at an all-time high, but there is still a 20-point gap in graduation as compared to Whites at 63%. This gap has enormous economic and societal implications. “Without education, there is no hope for our people, and without hope, our future is lost.” —Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 2009 This treatise not only offers inspiration and practical advice for Black men seeking higher education; it provides valuable suggestions for high school counselors, college administrators, and faculty who support this worthy goal.
