Book excerpt: The purpose of this research project was to develop a radar technique to detect the presence of flying birds potentially hazardous to aircraft near airport runways; to distinguish them from other radar targets; to estimate the size and number of birds in order to assess the hazard. The motions of a bird in flight are characterized by a distinctive velocity spectrum that can be detected by radar. These 'aural signatures' were identified by Doppler technique and verified by visual sightings. This report provides a description of the analysis techniques, compares range-gated to nonrange-gated systems and also conventional and Doppler radars. A discussion concerning modification of a typical system to a Doppler system is included. A method of determining the actual number of birds in the target volume is discussed. The report also includes a scene-by-scene description of a film presentation made to more fully quantify the Doppler technique. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundbreaking Handbook Offers Detailed Research and Valuable Methodology to Address Dangerous and Costly Aviation Hazard Though annual damages from bird and bat collisions with aircraft have been estimated at $400 million in the United States and up to $1.2 billion in commercial aviation worldwide and despite numerous conferences and councils dedicated to the issue, very little has been published on this expensive and sometimes-lethal flying risk. Bird Strike in Aviation seeks to fill this gap, providing a comprehensive guide to preventing and minimizing damage caused by bird strike on aircraft. Based on a thorough and comprehensive examination of the subject, Dr. El-Sayed offers different approaches to reducing bird strikes, including detailed coverage of the three categories necessary for such reduction, namely, awareness/education, bird management (active and passive control), and aircraft design. In addition, the text discusses the importance of cooperation between airplanes, airports and air traffic authorities as well as testing methods necessary for certification of both aircraft frame and engine. Other notable features include: Statistics and analyses for bird strikes with both civil and military helicopters as well as military fixed wing aircrafts, including annual costs, critical flight altitudes, critical parts of aircraft, distance from air base and specifics of date and timing Thorough review and analysis all fatal bird strike accidents and most non-fatal accidents since 1905, the first book to provide such a reference The use of numerical methods in analyzing historic data (ex. probability functions, finite element methods for analyzing impact on aircraft structure, experimental measurement technique for displacement, vibration, component distortion, etc.) Instruction on identification of bird species (using visual, microscopic, and DNA evidence) and details of bird migration to aid air traffic control in avoiding scenarios likely to result in collision With its wealth of statistical data, innovative research, and practical suggestions, Bird Strike in Aviation will prove a vital resource for researchers, engineers and graduate students in aerospace engineering/manufacturing or ornithology, as well as for military and civilian pilots and flight crew or professionals in aviation authorities and air traffic control.

Book excerpt: WaveBand as part of a Dual Use and Science and Technology Contract in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration and the US Air Force Research Laboratory at Rome NY developed a 94 GHz radar named BIRDARTM to detect and report bird activity at airports and airfields and thus prevent potential bird strikes with aircraft during landing and takeoff. The radar is compact utilizing a state-of-the-art 575 mW solid state millimeter-wave power source. WaveBand's patented scanning antenna is used to transmit and receive signals that detect and track birds. The return signals are processed in a radar signal processor incorporated into a low-cost PC architecture. The integrated monitor displays the backscattered power in several ways. The primary format is backscattered power in range versus azimuth angle or transformed azimuth distance. Alternate displays of moving targets superimposed on GIS maps or two-dimensional perspective imagery with near-photographic quality corresponding to the backscattered power are also available. Months of testing at several venues proved the final radar design to exhibit reliable performance. Calibration test and evaluation sites included USAFRL Rome NY; JFK Airport NY; Klamath Basin OR; El Mirage Dry Lake CA; Salton Sea CA; Bolsa Chica Bird Reserve CA; and DFW Airport TX. Small bird detections were reported at distances of 1.2 to 1.3 km and large birds such as geese at distances of 2.3 to 2.6 km during these tests. Final testing at DFW Airport was a great success in that the radar functioned perfectly throughout and was able to detect birds of opportunity at ranges that provided data to substantiate the extrapolation of future radar designs to the detection of large bird flocks at 3 miles. Substantial coverage of the final DFW tests was provided by members of radio TV and the printed press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive overview of wildlife issues facing airports and how to minimize conflicts. Winner of the NWRC Publication Award of the National Wildlife Research Center The pilot watches the instrument panel and prepares for touchdown—a routine landing until a burst of birds, a coyote, or a herd of deer crosses the runway! Every year, pilots experience this tension and many aircraft come into direct contact with birds and other wildlife, resulting in more than one billion dollars in damage annually. The United States Federal Aviation Administration has recorded a rise in these incidents over the past decade due to the combined effects of more reporting, rebounding wildlife populations, and an increased number of flights. Wildlife in Airport Environments tackles the issue of what to do about encounters with wildlife in and around airports—from rural, small-craft airparks to major international hubs. Whether the problem is birds or bats in the flight path or a moose on the runway, the authors provide a thorough overview of the science behind wildlife management at airports. This well-written, carefully documented volume presents a clear synthesis for researchers, wildlife managers, and airport professionals. The book belongs in the hands of all those charged with minimizing the risks that wildlife pose to air travel. Wildlife in Airport Environments is the first book in the series Wildlife Management and Conservation and is published in association with The Wildlife Society. Contributors Michael L. Book excerpt: Federal Aviation Administration and Air Force surveillance radars are capable of monitoring bird movements efficiently and can be used to minimize the hazard of collisions between birds and aircraft if those responsible for the operation of these systems take a sufficient interest in this application. This statement is supported by successive-time-exposure photographic recordings of bird echoes seen by the North Platte and Denver radars. In addition, visits have been made to numerous FAA air route surveillance centers in the lower forty-eight states and DEW and AC and W radar sites in Alaska. Simultaneous monitoring of radar screens at three FAA centers on one occasion provided information about bird movements in the area from Ohio on the east to Arizona on the West. Air Force radars in Alaska have provided interesting new information on bird migration between Alaska and Siberia and along the coastline of Alaska. Such use of existing radar systems on a partially multipurpose basis justifies further their expense of operation. The research conducted with the support of the AFOSR has led to new programs of research, at the University of Colorado, involving the bird hazard in the immediate vicinity of airports and the identification of birds by radar. Book excerpt: Bird strikes represent a serious economic and safety risk to aircraft operations, especially near airports where aircraft are in critical stages of flight with little room for error. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to research ways of mitigating the risk to aircraft posed by bird targets which include surveillance of birds with specialized radar systems. This thesis presents an algorithm that can utilize data from an avian radar, Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) aircraft positioning data, and other sources to determine which birds constitute a significant risk to aircraft. It is envisioned that this algorithm could be added into a system which then alerts air traffic control (ATC) and/or pilots through communication protocols such as ADS-B and the ATC ground network. For this thesis, avian radar and ADS-B data was analyzed and tested through the prototype algorithm with a simulated aircraft track to illustrate example scenarios of this algorithm working. Additionally, multiple scenarios with a single simulated bird and simulated aircraft track were tested to verify operation of the algorithm when a known collision occurs.
