Previously titled "Wild Medicine," this volume has been repurposed and expanded as a resource for practitioners with 50 new pages added including pieces on medicinal Cannabis, Gotu Kola, Desert Lavender, Spilanthes, Hibiscus, Goldenrod, and how to cultivate herbs.Materia is a Latin word meaning "matter." It matters to the herbalist that there is unwellness and suffering, and it matters whether we respond with herbs or with pharmaceutical drugs, and it matters which plants we use, in what ways, for which conditions and which constitutions. One's Materia Medica consists of the actual plant matter we utilize in our treatments, and its effective use is dependent on our understanding of it and its actions. For this reason, a Materia Medica is also a collection of profiles or studies, a collective body of usable plant medicine knowledge.Section #I of the book you hold features over 60 in-depth medicinal and edible plant profiles, with information on how to identify, wildcraft, garden, harvest, preserve, cook, or make medicines out of each. Section #II is all about herbalist ethos, practica and tips, wildcrafting and cultivation principles and means. The greater our familiarity with the medicinal plants we us, the greater our success will be in treating conditions and contributing to health. Such familiarity may begin or be augmented by reading and research, and then be deepened through clinical, personal, and hands-on experience. For that purpose, we hope this book of Materia Medica will prove a resource, an aid, and an inspiration.
Download or read book Copeland's Cure written by Natalie Robins and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2009-07-22 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, one out of every three Americans uses some form of alternative medicine, either along with their conventional (“standard,” “traditional”) medications or in place of them. One of the most controversial–as well as one of the most popular–alternatives is homeopathy, a wholly Western invention brought to America from Germany in 1827, nearly forty years before the discovery that germs cause disease. Homeopathy is a therapy that uses minute doses of natural substances–minerals, such as mercury or phosphorus; various plants, mushrooms, or bark; and insect, shellfish, and other animal products, such as Oscillococcinum. These remedies mimic the symptoms of the sick person and are said to bring about relief by “entering” the body’s “vital force.” Many homeopaths believe that the greater the dilution, the greater the medical benefit, even though often not a single molecule of the original substance remains in the solution. In Copeland’s Cure, Natalie Robins tells the fascinating story of homeopathy in this country; how it came to be accepted because of the gentleness of its approach–Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were outspoken advocates, as were Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Daniel Webster. We find out about the unusual war between alternative and conventional medicine that began in 1847, after the AMA banned homeopaths from membership even though their medical training was identical to that of doctors practicing traditional medicine. We learn how homeopaths were increasingly considered not to be “real” doctors, and how “real” doctors risked expulsion from the AMA if they even consulted with a homeopath. At the center of Copeland's Cure is Royal Samuel Copeland, the now-forgotten maverick senator from New York who served from 1923 to 1938. Copeland was a student of both conventional and homeopathic medicine, an eye surgeon who became president of the American Institute of Homeopathy, dean of the New York Homeopathic Medical College, and health commissioner of New York City from 1918 to 1923 (he instituted unique approaches to the deadly flu pandemic). We see how Copeland straddled the worlds of politics (he befriended Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others) and medicine (as senator, he helped get rid of medical “diploma mills”). His crowning achievement was to give homeopathy lasting legitimacy by including all its remedies in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. Finally, the author brings the story of clashing medical beliefs into the present, and describes the role of homeopathy today and how some of its practitioners are now adhering to the strictest standards of scientific research–controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical studies.

Download or read book The Best Family Homeopathy Acute Care Manual written by Kate Birch and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book may be the best medical investment you make for your family. Self-reliance in home prescribing is the goal of this acute care manual. This pictorial guide to homeopathic care is the first of its kind. While homeopathy has been around for over 200 years and there are many other first aid manuals and field guides available, this book takes the work to a new level. The most complicated task for the lay person in homeopathy is how to find a remedy for specific therapeutic indications in a short and reliable way. Here the content is laid out in three simple sections:1. Philosophy2. Six therapeutic modules3. Materia Medica (MM)The color-coded references in the therapeutic modules and associated remedies help the reader navigate quickly and efficiently between content towards the desired goal of finding a remedy. The artfully designed layout of the Materia Medica pages capture the basics of confirmed clinical symptoms, description of the remedies and their therapeutic indications. Each therapeutic module gives a holistic overview of the conditions a hand and extensive differentials between the possible applicable remedies. Here the text is designed to hold the readers hand as they sit by the bed side of their sick children, helping them to recover their health in a fast and gentle way. The success of years of clinical practice, attending to those late night calls of infants with high fevers, whole families stricken with the flu, and/or mental and emotional crises, have served to be the foundation upon which this book is crafted. The text, which has been shaped from the simple of language of conversations with mothers, not only explains how homeopathy works and what to expect on the way to cure, but exposes the depth of possibilities of interconnection between this system of healing for the individual and our relationship to the world we live, and through insight into the curative potential of the natural substances found on this planet. Enjoy!
