Book excerpt: Martin Bell, Ken Livingstone and Richard Taylor (the doctor who became an MP to save his local hospital) are the best known of a growing band of British politicians making their mark outside the traditional party system. Some (like Livingstone) have emerged from within the old political system that let them down, others (Bell, Taylor) have come into politics from outside in response to a crisis of some kind, often in defence of a perceived threat to their local town or district. Richard Berry traces this development by case studies and interviews to test the theory that these are not isolated cases, but part of a permanent trend in British politics,a shift away from the party system in favour of independent non-aligned representatives of the people.

Book Synopsis Confessions of a Political Maverick by : Austin Mitchell
Download or read book Confessions of a Political Maverick written by Austin Mitchell and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Political Books Awards 'Best Parliamentary Memoir 2018' Austin Mitchell is a political maverick. For thirty-eight years he was a fly in the parliamentary ointment, a recurring itch on the body politic. A maverick may annoy the whips, threaten party discipline and challenge the solemnities of Parliament. Troublemakers they may well be, but the Commons would certainly be a duller place without them. However Mitchell's dissidence wasn't all bitterness without volume control. Rattling the cage, swimming against the tide, pursuing honourable causes and, of course, fighting for his constituency, Grimsby, proved a rewarding career in itself. Confessions of a Political Maverick succeeds in uncovering the realities behind the pretentious parliamentary facade of tradition and the stuffy complacency of Britain's failing political class. Dissenting from the peculiar and highly particular conformity of career politicians dedicated to climbing the greasy pole can be a lonely role, but it can also be fun. It certainly was for Austin Mitchell.

Book Synopsis The Honourable Ladies by : Iain Dale
Download or read book The Honourable Ladies written by Iain Dale and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biteback Publishing is delighted to announce a major new project, a two volume series of biographies of every female MP ever to be elected to the House of Commons. When Constance Markievicz stood for election as MP for Dublin St Patrick's in 1918, few people believed she could win the seat – yet she did. A breakthrough in the bitter struggle for female enfranchisement had come earlier that year, followed by a second landmark piece of legislation allowing women to be elected to Parliament – and Markievicz duly became the first woman MP. A member of Sinn Féin, she refused to take her seat. She did, however, pave the way for future generations, and only eleven months later, Nancy Astor entered the Commons. A century on from that historic event, 491 women have now passed through the hallowed doors of Parliament. Each one of these pioneers has fought tenaciously to introduce enduring reform, and in doing so has helped revolutionise Britain's political landscape, ensuring that women's contributions are not consigned to the history books. Containing profiles of all 287 woman MPs from 1997 to 2019, and with female contributors from Mary Beard to Caroline Lucas, Ruth Davidson to Yvette Cooper and Margaret Beckett to Ann Widdecombe, The Honourable Ladies: Volume II is an indispensable and illuminating testament to the stories and achievements of these remarkable women.

Book Synopsis The Paradox of Parliament by : Jonathan Malloy
Download or read book The Paradox of Parliament written by Jonathan Malloy and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paradox of Parliament provides a comprehensive analysis of all aspects of Parliament in order to explain the paradoxical expectations placed on the institution. The book argues that Parliament labours under two different "logics" of its purpose and primary role: one based on governance and decision-making and one based on representation and voice. This produces a paradox that is common to many legislatures, but Canada and Canadians particularly struggle to recognize and reconcile the competing logics. In The Paradox of Parliament, Jonathan Malloy discusses the major aspects of Parliament through the lens of these two competing logics to explain the ongoing dissatisfaction with Parliament and perennial calls for parliamentary reform. It focuses on overarching analytical themes rather than exhaustive description. It centres people over procedure and theory, with strong emphasis given to dimensions of gender, race, and additional forms of diversity. Arguing for a holistic and realistic understanding of Parliament that recognizes and accepts that Parliament evolves and adapts, The Paradox of Parliament puts forward an important and novel interpretation of the many facets of Parliament in Canada.

Book excerpt: Sam served four overseas tours in the U.S. Army. He served in the Military Police during two tours of South Korea and one tour in West Germany. Once he graduated U.S. Army CID school he returned to West Germany as a Special Agent. Courtesy of the US Army he also served stateside assignments in Arizona, Texas, Alabama and Georgia. Sam observed the very best and the very worst of the US Military. While in Frankfurt West Germany Sam was Team Chief of the most productive Narcotics Investigation (Drug Suppression Team) in Europe. However, when he was told that he would be taking over more more Narcotics Investigations as a CID Team Chief, he declined and left the US Army with numerous medals and awards. Sam no longer believed our current "War on Drugs" paradigm was productive. Our "Drug War" mentality prevents Law Enforcement from doing real "Harm Reduction" and causes more damage and harm than the actual illegal drug use.
