Book excerpt: Simple modifications in design and operation of a 0.22-caliber piston-compression light-gas gun resulted in an increase in muzzle velocity from 15,000 to 29,700 feet per second. A contracting tapered section was added at the high-pressure end of the pump tube. The forward 4 inches of the pump piston, made of high-density polyethylene plastic, is forced to intrude into the tapered coupling and launch tube during the launching sequence. Hydrogen has been substituted for helium as the working gas. The effect on performance of varying several importnat parameters is demonstrated. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Joint Actinide Shock Physics Experimental Facility (JASPER) located in area 27 at the Nevada Test Site Has been tasked with providing high accuracy information on the Equation Of State (EOS) and other dynamic properties of weapons grade plutonium and other actinides important to the stockpile stewardship program. In the past 5 years this facility has provided dozens of experimental data points for the accurate determination of pressure density relationship for these materials over a broad pressure range. In order to complete this survey it is necessary to extend the low pressure region to include projectile velocities below 2 km/s. For most gas gun facilities this would present not too great a difficulty, one could simply decrease the amount of propellant along with a decrease in the strength of the petal valve, However JASPER requires that the piston be securely embedded in the Acceleration Reservoir (AR) as part of the containment system. The projectile must remain flat and undistorted. This requirement makes the attainment of slow velocities problematic. This talk will discuss the JASPER Facility, A finite difference code developed to give predictive capability for two stage gas guns, and a set of experiments performed to demonstrate this capability.

Book excerpt: Two-stage light guns are used extensively in hypervelocity research. The applications of this technology include impact studies and special materials development. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has developed two-stage guns that accelerate small projectiles (4-mm nominal diameter) to velocities of up to (almost equal to)5 km/s. These guns are relatively small and simple (thus, easy to operate), allowing a significant number of test shots to be carried out and data accumulated in a short time. Materials that have been used for projectiles include plastics, frozen isotopes of hydrogen, and lithium hydride. One gun has been used to demonstrate repetitive operation at a rate of 0.7 Hz; and, with a few design improvements, it appears capable of performing at firing frequencies of 1--2 Hz. A schematic of ORNL two-stage device is shown below. Unlike most such devices, no rupture disks are used. Instead, a fast valve (high-flow type) initiates the acceleration process in the first stage. Projectiles can be loaded into the gun breech via the slide mechanism; this action has been automated which allows repetitive firing. Alternatively, the device is equipped with pipe gun'' apparatus in which gas can be frozen in situ in the gun barrel to form the projectile. This equipment operates with high reliability and is well suited for small-scale testing at high velocity. 17 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ram accelerator is a hypervelocity launcher that accelerates projectiles through a tube filled with gaseous propellant. Combustion is initiated by the passage of the projectile and will overtake the projectile unless it enters the tube at a sufficiently high Mach number. With economical propellant mixtures such as methane/air, the projectile must be launched into the tube at approximately 1000 m/s. This limit on ram operation restricts projectile launch duties in smoothbore ram accelerators to powder guns and light gas guns. The baffled-tube ram accelerator (BTRA) retards the travel of the combustion-driven shock front with a series of baffles, preventing combustion from overtaking the projectile at low Mach numbers. Recent experiments with low velocity starting in the University of Washington’s BTRA have confirmed that successful ram operation can occur at a projectile entrance velocity of 650 m/s in a BTRA operating with methane/air propellant. These results open the door to using poorer-performing launchers than have previously been contemplated for ram projectile launch. A subscale two-stage gas gun was constructed to determine the feasibility of ram starting with a gun that achieves these low entrance velocities through pressure and temperature multiplication of an extremely low-cost propellant, such as nitrogen or compressed air. Projectile launch conditions were predicted with the isentropic relations and gun performance was compared to a model of a single-stage infinite-breech gas gun. A high-speed camera was used to directly measure muzzle velocity and to infer pressure at the nozzle. The measured ballistic efficiency of the launcher indicates that substantial increases in propellant temperature and pressure were achieved, in line with predictions.

Book excerpt: The report describes a constant base pressure two-stage light-gas gun system installed at North Carolina State University at Raleigh for studying hypervelocity impact phenomena. The gun uses helium gas as propellant and can produce velocities up to 20,000 feet per second. A description of the problems encountered in developing the experimental facility and solutions developed to meet these problems are presented. The components which were designed by the authors include target support, breech support, gas deflector, impact chamber extension, piston and projectile. These components are unique to this installation and have facilitated target alignment, optical measurements and firing the gun.

Book excerpt: A new gasdynamic launcher is described, in which intact projectiles weighing at least 1 gram can be accelerated to mass velocities of 15- 20 km/s. The system employs a conventional 2--stage light gas gun, with the barrel modified and filled with helium to act as a pump tube for a third stage. The key feature of the launcher is that the peak pressure in the third stage can be maintained below 2.5 GPa, thus assuring high efficiency and the integrity of the projectile.

Book excerpt: The basic feasibility of a hypervelocity weapon concept, evolved from the operating principles and techniques of the light gas gun, was experimentally investigated. Initial efforts were directed toward the preliminary design and experimental proof of the mechanisms essential to the implementation of the concept. Those phases of the operation which could be treated separately were tested first, to reveal and mitigate basic difficulties. Following these preliminary studies, a launcher was constructed which embodied all critical aspects of the weapon concept; and a series of single-round firings was made to discover, study, and appraise the fundamental problem areas. Subsequent efforts were concerned with the revision or modification of certain design features to improve the functioning and reliability of the single-shot operation. From the results of this work, it may be concluded that the basic feasibility of the concept is established. Several problem areas remain to be eliminated, however, and most of these must be resolved before a launcher capable of automatic repeated fire can be constructed.

Book excerpt: The development of a two-stage light gas gun to accelerate hydrogen isotope pellets to high speeds is under way at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. High velocities (>2 km/s) are desirable for plasma fueling applications, since the faster pellets can penetrate more deeply into large, hot plasmas and deposit atoms of fuel directly in a larger fraction of the plasma volume. In the initial configuration of the two-stage device, a 2.2-l volume (/

This book was released on 1989 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small, light projectiles have been accelerated to high speeds using a two-stage light gas gun at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. With 35-mg plastic projectiles (4 mm in diameter), speeds of up to 4.5 km/s have been recorded. The pipe gun'' technique for freezing hydrogen isotopes in situ in the gun barrel has been used to accelerate deuterium pellets (nominal diameter of 4 mm) to velocities of up to 2.85 km/s. The primary application of this technology is for plasma fueling of fusion devices via pellet injection of hydrogen isotopes. Conventional pellet injectors are limited to pellet speeds in the range 1-2 km/s. Higher velocities are desirable for plasma fueling applications, and the two-stage pneumatic technique offers performance in a higher velocity regime. However, experimental results indicate that the use of sabots to encase the cryogenic pellets and protect them for the high peak pressures will be required to reliably attain intact pellets at speeds of (almost equal to)3 km/s or greater. In some limited tests, lithium hydride pellets were accelerated to speeds of up to 4.2 km/s. Also, repetitive operation of the two-stage gun (four plastic pellets fired at (almost equal to)0.5 Hz) was demonstrated for the first time in preliminary tests. The equipment and operation are described, and experimental results and some comparisons with a theoretical model are presented. 17 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.
