Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abstract of the Evidence Delivered Before a Select Committee of the House of Commons in the Years 1790, and 1791: On the Part of the Petitioners for the Abolition of the Slave-Trade In consequence of the numerous Petitions which were sent to Parliament from different Counties, Cities, and Towns of Great Britain, in the year 1788, for the Abolition Of The Slave-Trade, it was determined by the House of Commons to hear Evidence upon that subject. The Slave-Merchants and Planters accordingly brought forward several persons as witnesses, the first in behalf of the continuance of Slave-trade, the latter in defence of the Colonial Slavery. These were heard and examined in the years 1789 and 1790. Several persons were afterwards called on the side of the petitioners of Great Britain, to substantiate the foundation of their federal petitions, and to invalidate federal points of the evidence which the others had offered. These were examined in the years 1790, and 1791. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: David Brion Davis's books on the history of slavery reflect some of the most distinguished and influential thinking on the subject to appear in the past generation. The Problem of Slavery in the Age of Revolution, the sequel to Davis's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Problem of Slavery in Western Culture and the second volume of a proposed trilogy, is a truly monumental work of historical scholarship that first appeared in 1975 to critical acclaim both academic and literary. This reprint of that important work includes a new preface by the author, in which he situates the book's argument within the historiographic debates of the last two decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How an eighteenth-century engraving of a slave ship became a cultural icon of Black resistance, identity, and remembrance One of the most iconic images of slavery is a schematic wood engraving depicting the human cargo hold of a slave ship. First published by British abolitionists in 1788, it exposed this widespread commercial practice for what it really was—shocking, immoral, barbaric, unimaginable. Printed as handbills and broadsides, the image Cheryl Finley has termed the "slave ship icon" was easily reproduced, and by the end of the eighteenth century it was circulating by the tens of thousands around the Atlantic rim. Committed to Memory provides the first in-depth look at how this artifact of the fight against slavery became an enduring symbol of Black resistance, identity, and remembrance. Finley traces how the slave ship icon became a powerful tool in the hands of British and American abolitionists, and how its radical potential was rediscovered in the twentieth century by Black artists, activists, writers, filmmakers, and curators. Finley offers provocative new insights into the works of Amiri Baraka, Romare Bearden, Betye Saar, and many others. She demonstrates how the icon was transformed into poetry, literature, visual art, sculpture, performance, and film—and became a medium through which diasporic Africans have reasserted their common identity and memorialized their ancestors. Beautifully illustrated, Committed to Memory features works from around the world, taking readers from the United States and England to West Africa and the Caribbean. It shows how contemporary Black artists and their allies have used this iconic eighteenth-century engraving to reflect on the trauma of slavery and come to terms with its legacy.
