In this volume deriving from the first international Conference of the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Black Sea Studies, thirteen contributions by scholars from Russia, Ukraine, Romania, USA, Canada, Belgium and Denmark review and discuss the elements upon which the chronology used in Black Sea archaeology and history in the period c. 400-100 BC is built. The subjects include: amphora and amphora stamp chronologies (Mark Lawall; Sergej Ju. Monachov; Niculae Conovici; Vladimir Stolba), coin chronology (Francois de Callatay, Athenian pottery (Susan I. Rotroff), epigraphic evidence (Jakob Munk Hojte), and a number of case studies presenting the material on which is based the dating of a series of Greek and barbarian/non-Greek sites and burial monuments on the northern shores of the Black Sea (Valentina V. Krapivina; Valeria Bylkova; Lise Hannestad, Miron I. Zolotarev, Ju. P. Zaytsev, Valentina I. Mordvinceva). VLADIMIR STOLBA is Senior Researcher at The Institute of the History of Material Culture, Russian Academy of Science, St Petersburg, and presently at the Centre for Black Sea Studies, Aarhus. Book Synopsis Ancient Naukratis by : William D. E. Coulson
Download or read book Ancient Naukratis written by William D. E. Coulson and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 1996 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naukratis, the first city in Egypt where Greeks were permitted to settle and one of the major centers of the ancient world, is located in the West Nile Delta south of modern Alexandria, It was first excavated by Flinders Petrie in 1884; his discoveries indicated occupation from the Archaic Period to Late Antiquity. The limited extent of Petrie's excavations and the erosion of the site inspired the American Ancient Naukratis Project to start new fieldwork in 1980. This volume contains details of an intensive surface survey (with selective drill-sampling) of the area surrounding Petrie's trenches, which have become waterlogged. Intensive cataloguing of pottery and small find distribution allows full appreciation of the functional and chronological patterning of the larger site. An historical essay on the possible origins of Naukratis, a study of stamped amphora handles, a geological study and new studies of material from Petrie's original excavations are also included in this volume.

Book Synopsis Amphora Stamps from Thasos by : Chavdar Tzochev
Download or read book Amphora Stamps from Thasos written by Chavdar Tzochev and published by American School of Classical Studies at Athens. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Thasos was renowned for its wine, which was heavily exported in ceramic amphoras across the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Once a principal market in this trade, the Athenian Agora is now home to one of the largest collections of stamped amphora fragments from the island of Thasos, including 723 items dating from the beginning of the 4th to the late 2nd century B.C. This volume presents the Thasian amphora stamps of the Agora collection, contextualized in a broader discussion of their interpretation and chronology. The core contributions of the volume are an improved chronology of the officials mentioned on the stamps, based on a reassessment of archaeological evidence from the Agora and beyond, and an innovative study of the engravers who made the stamping dies. This volume also provides a critical review of the complex and still poorly understood system of control over ceramic production that underlies the stamping practice. A quantitative study based on 28,030 Thasian stamps highlights the major trends in the Thasian wine trade and offers insight into the role of Athens in this trade.
