Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amours's Hand Book of Agriculture Many factors are back of this new interest in agriculture. In the first place, all are beginning to see that agriculture is the only vocation that can maintain an independent existence. For in it, men can find their food, clothing and shelter, and with these life can be sustained. In the second place, all are beginning to understand the importance of the soil as our universal source of supplies. We are beginning to realize that the soil can be wasted or it can be conserved in a state of permanent fertility, and that universal interest may set machinery in motion to preserve it permanently before the thinning process has gone too far. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Agriculture There has been an enlargement of the facilities for independent and original inquiry in various lines, and this important phase of modern education has been industriously fos tered. Notable additions to the equipment for such work have been made in astronomy and bacteriology, but the most important have been in the line of agricultural investigation. The equipment of the Experiment Station has been greatly increased. South Hall, which had been previously occupied' in part by the agricultural department, has been wholly as signed to it, and has been, in large part, overhauled and refitted, and now furnishes very commodious apartments for it. The laboratory facilities have been fully doubled. New apparatus and a large invoice of important foreign works have been purchased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Farm Crops: A Manual of the Science of Agriculture, and a Hand-Book of Practice for American Farmers Not a farmer of that day, nor a chemist, knew that bones furnished phosphoric acid to plants; or that guano provided in its ammonia the materials from which their gluten and other nitrogenous substances were derived. Indeed the renowned father of agricultural science: Liebig - when he propounded his mineral theory, which was that the ashes of plants contained everything which they drew from the soil, and that if the mineral substances contained in the ashes, were supplied in sufficient quantity to the crops, there would be scarcely a limit to the product, excepting the space in which they were contained - knew nothing about the invaluable nitrogen which we now know to be wholly indispensable to plant growth. But light has grad ually dawned upon us, and by slow and sometimes faltering progress, there has been built up a system of agricultural science which explains the laws of plant growth and affords the most important information to the cultivator of the soil. Science is based upon fact. Philosophy is based upon speculation. Science is the outgrowth of philosophy, be cause before we can reach a true knowledge of any fact we must approach the study of it by a well devised theory, changed as may be necessary, and tested patiently and slowly until the knowledge sought is found. This know ledge, when verified by practice, sufficiently proved and classified, becomes science. Science then is nothing for the farmer to fear, or cast doubt and suspicion upon. Theory as has been said, has no part or lot in it; it is a summary of known facts, and is therefore of the most valuable use to the farmer as it gives him a sound basis upon which to build up such conclusions in regard to his practice as will enable him to meet the various difficulties which are al ways arising in his work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Agriculture IN the preparation of this elementary work upon the Principles of Agriculture, the author has been desirous of avoiding, as far as possible, the use of technical terms, in cases where other terms in general use would convey the same idea. When it has been necessary to employ such terms, they have been explained in the simplest possible manner, so as to render the book intelligible to all classes of readers. Although the work is strictly elementary, the author has considered it desirable to draw attention to certain points in practice and in theory, which seem to be insufficiently recognized by many of our practical and scientific agriculturists. The writer has endeavoured to treat the subject in as simple a manner as possible, without descending to puerility; and to give a straightforward and definite account of the plant and the soil, well within the reach of an ordinarily intelligent boy. A series of questions is appended to each Di vision, which the teacher can use or modify at his discretion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture The interest in the teaching of agriculture is but a part of a much larger question, - the movement for teaching by means of things that have come within the student's experience. Laboratory work and all manual work are but a part of the same movement. The primary purpose of teaching agriculture is not to make farmers. It is ahuman-interest subject. The underlying reason why such teaching is desirable is because it brings the schools in touch with the home life - the daily life of the community. A large part of our teaching has had no relation whatever to our daily lives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American d104 Book of Practical and Scientific Agriculture The following work is strictly what it professes to be - A d104 Book. It is not intended so much to teach the Science and Art of Agriculture, as to enable the Teacher to teach. In its character it is suggestive, and makes no pretensions to be a perfect Encyclop dia of the subject. At the same time it is believed that there is no point - so far as the work professes to go - on which it is important that the Teacher should enlarge, or the student learn, to which they will not find their attention directed. Nor will the experienced Farmer, or the general reader fail to be interested. Practice and science are brought together, and compelled to assist each other; instead of being unnaturally divorced, as, unhappily, they have too long been in this department of knowledge. This little work is the offspring of a sorely felt necessity. A year since, the Author was unexpectedly called upon to deliver a course of lectures on Agriculture, before the newly organized "Scientific Department" of the University of Michigan. He had for some years studied the subject, both practically and theoretically, and collected a valuable library in connection with it. But this he had done merely for his own gratification, without any direct object in view, and certainly with no intention of ever becoming a teacher of Agriculture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arid Agriculture: A Hand-Book for the Western Farmer and Stockman Arid agriculture is the agriculture of the arid region. An arid country is one in which there is a small amount of rainfall. The word rainfall ashere used means the total precipita tion during the year, including rain, snow, sleet, and hail. A small amount of rainfall means an amount which used to be considered insuffi cient for the raising of field crops without the artificial application of water. The line between possible farming by natural rainfall and impos sible farming with natural moisture was for merly somewhat definitely fixed. More than twenty-five inches of precipitation in a year was considered sufficient for the production of gen eral crops. In places where between twenty-five inches of rain and fifteen inches occurs farming was considered uncertain, so regions receiving this amount of moisture were classed 'as sub humid, or semi-arid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Agriculture: For the School, the Farm, and the Fireside This book is intended to supply an important defect in the instruction of youth. Children should not only receive instruction in the various studies now pursued in the schools, but they should be enabled to obtain the rudiments of a correct agricultural education in the forming period of life. Many of them are destined to work upon the surface of the earth, and to use the materials of which it is formed. They are to cooperate with the great powers of nature and to be able, in many instances, to control these powers. They instinctively long to become acquainted with the materials they are to work upon, and the powers they are to work with. An agricultural education should, therefore, be commenced in childhood. Children are always interested in animals and other natural objects. There is scarcely a fact exhibited in nature which does not, at once, interest their curiosity and appeal to their imagination. They should, therefore, learn about the earth, the different kinds of soil, the names of the different kinds of rocks and their uses. Tell children that, in the soil, the roots of the grasses dissolve the stones, and carry particles of them up and leave them, infinitely minute but infinitely numerous, in the stem and leaves, and that these particles make the grass strong enough to stand up, and they will be interested in the information.
