Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a cost analysis of Ammonia production from heavy oil via the integration of two production processes: hydrogen production from heavy oils via partial oxidation and ammonia synthesis. In this process, heavy oil, a byproduct of petroleum refining processes, is used as feedstock in a gasification process to produce synthesis gas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The synthesis gas is then subjected to a water-gas shift reaction, in which its carbon monoxide content is converted into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The outlet from the shift reactors undergoes further purification steps for the recovery of hydrogen. Then, hydrogen is mixed with nitrogen, produced by an air separation unit, and the mixture is fed to the ammonia synthesis plant, in which they both react producing Ammonia. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): "Ammonia", Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 2010; Keywords: Gasification, Partial Oxidation, Linde, LAC, Haldor Topsoe and KBR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a cost analysis of Ammonia production from natural gas The process examined is similar to KBR Purifier process. In this process, syngas is initially produced from natural gas using a process that combines steam and autothermal reforming. Air is fed to the autothermal furnace to provide oxygen to the autothermal reform and nitrogen required in the ammonia synthesis loop. After several purifications steps a stream containing nitrogen and hydrogen is fed to the ammonia synthesis loop to be converted into ammonia. The ammonia synthesis portrayed is based on a chemical looping process, a novel plant configuration reported in the literature. In the process examined, oxygen carrier particles are circulated within a chemical looping comprising three reactors, respectively fed by steam, natural gas and steam. The outlet from the looping reactors is passed through compression and water separation steps to generate pure streams of nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Nitrogen and hydrogen are reacted to generate Ammonia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the study of innovation in processes for the production of synthetic ammonia, the authors examine the effects of environmental and workplace regulations on business innovation in general. They present a history of ammonia production in the U.S., a survey of government regulation in the industry, and a model of process innovation that combines the economist's production function with the technical and practical concepts of the engineer. Contrary to the widely held view that regulation has an unfortunate impact on business, the authors demonstrate that—at least in one industry—the economic factors of production have a measurable impact on innovation, while regulation does not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a cost analysis of Polylactic Acid (PLA) production starting from corn The first section of the examined process is similar to Cargill process for lactic acid production, while the second section is similar to the NatureWorks process for polymerization of lactic acid. In this process, shelled corn is passed through a wet milling process to form corn starch, which, in turn, is hydrolyzed to dextrose, the feed for the fermentation process that generates lactic acid . Lactic Acid recovery from the fermentation broth is carried out via trialkylamine solvent extraction in the presence of carbon dioxide. A L-Lactic Acid solution in water is formed and further polymerized to form Polylactic Acid. The conversion of corn into dextrose forms some residues that are sold as by-product. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) US Patent 6472559, issued to Cargill in 2002 (2) US Patent 8674056, issued to NatureWorks in 2014 (3) EP Patent 1247808, issued to Cargill in 2003 Keywords: Corn, Corn Starch, 2-Hydroxypropanoic Acid, Anaerobic Fermentation, Trialkyl Amine, Sodium Carbonate, Lactide, 2-Hydroxypropanoic Acid, Dow, Biodegradable Polymer
