Book excerpt: The transition metal ferrites of composition MFe2O4 where M is Fe, Co, or Ni are well established materials for various biological applications due to their interesting magnetic properties. Their elemental and stochiometric composition can be easily manipulated which allows further tuning of their ferrimagnetic properties. By changing the identity of M and by changing the crystallite size of the ferrites, nanocrystals with diverse magnetic properties can be systematically produced. Furthermore, ferrites are more stable in diverse chemical environments, as compared to metallic nanoparticles, which make ferrites particularly useful for a broad range of biomedical applications, especially in the field of magnetic resonance imaging and cell labeling. In this work, spinel ferrites of composition CoFe2O4, NiFe2O4, and Ni.5Co.5 Fe2O4 were synthesized by a polyol method utilizing ethylene glycol as the solvent, reducing agent, and surfactant. The nanoparticles produced were surface coated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane to increase solubility as well as to serve as an anchor for further conjugation with targeting substrates such as peptides and antibodies. The first part of this dissertation was focused on using the polyol method to produce nanoparticles of various metallic compositions. In each case, the polyol method provided an easy one-pot method to produce metallic as well as metal oxide nanocrystals. Utilizing the polyol method, ferrites of CoFe2O4, NiFe2O4, and Ni.5Co.5 Fe2O4 were produced with size ranges between 20 nm and 50 nm depending on the reaction time in the polyol. The second part of this dissertation was concerned with the functionalization of the nanoparticles to serve as an anchor for further conjugation with targeting substrates in the immunoaffinity separation of food borne pathogens. These nanoparticles were functionalized using an anti-E. coli O157:H7 antibody, mixed with a food matrix, and then subsequently removed from the food matrix by an external magnet in order to be analyzed by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization/Time of Flight (MALDI/TOF) Mass Spectrometry as a rapid identification method of bacterial pathogens. Furthermore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was carried out on the polyol produced ferrites in order to measure the transverse relaxation time (T2) of the nanoparticles in order to investigate the size dependence and crystallite composition of the particles ability to affect the transverse relaxivity rarte (r2). Further understanding of how ferrite composition and crystallite size affect their magnetic properties and resulting MRI contrast abilities will provide insight into the best materials for the next generation of contrast agents. Lastly, the ability of nanoparticles to serve as a stationary phase material for reversed phase ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography will be discussed as a novel separation technique.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of nanomaterials are intimately dependent on their size, morphology, composition both elemental and structural, as well as their crystal structure or atomic arrangement. There exists a fundamental need to develop methods to precisely control and tune these parameters in order to target desirable materials. Colloidal chemistries utilize wet chemical precursors to synthesize inorganic nanomaterials from the bottom up and produce high quality materials. In addition to single component material synthesis, colloidal chemistries have been developed to synthesize multicomponent nanomaterials systems through a process called seeded growth. Seeded growth utilizes preformed nanoparticles as substrates to nucleate and grow new materials from their surfaces. This has led to the synthesis of highly complex heterostructured nanoparticles which allow for the incorporation of multiple material properties within single particle frameworks. While these techniques can control the structure and composition of the synthesized material, they do not allow for as much control over the resulting crystal structure. Other methods have been developed which allow for crystallographic templating and compositional modulation by post-synthetic cation exchange. Cation exchange utilizes molecular agents to solvate and exchange host cations in preformed crystals with those in solution while maintaining the anion sublattice relatively unperturbed. The crystallographic symmetry of the anion sublattice determines the symmetry of the final product phase. As such, cation exchange has allowed researchers to synthesize materials which are either metastable in bulk or not easily assessable through other methods. In this dissertation I discuss my efforts to utilize these synthetic tools to synthesize new and complex inorganic nanoparticles. First, I describe the seeded growth of Cu3N and Cu3PdN on Pt and Au nanocrystals. Utilizing Pt-Cu3PdN as the model system, it was observed that Cu3PdN nucleated and grew in a step-wise pathway with the initial deposition of Cu onto the surface. This was followed by the deposition of Pd onto the corners and edges of the Pt nanocubes which was followed by the coalescence and crystallization of Cu with the Pd to ultimately give Cu3PdN. When nucleating on more faceted or spherical seeds, whether Pt or Au, the resulting heterostructures took on more core@shell structures. In the absence of Pd, Cu3N nucleates indiscriminately on the surface of Pt without any of the regioselectivity seen with Cu3PdN. When utilizing Au seeds, AuCu alloy formation is observed without any apparent heterostructure formation. These observations helped us develop guidelines which are anticipated to be applicable to the formation of other ternary nitride heterostructures. Second, I discuss the synthesis of a new, metastable phase of copper selenide nanoparticles. This material was shown by EDS and XPS to adopt a nominally 2:1 stoichiometry and the XRD pattern did not match any known phase of Cu2-xSe. However, the nanoparticles did adopt a crystal structure similar to previously observed weissite Cu2-xTe. A structural model for our Cu2-xSe phase was developed utilizing a recently reported structural model for weissite Cu2-xTe which was computationally verified in collaboration with Professor Ismaila Dabo's group. Weissite-like Cu2-xSe has trigonal symmetry (space group P ̄3 m1) and is a layered structure with alternative Cu-rich and Cu-deficient layers sandwiched between layers of Se. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy of weissite-like Cu2-xSe showed a broad plasmon absorbance band centered around 1550 nm. Lastly, I discuss my efforts to develop synthetic guidelines for the competitive synthesis of ternary copper selenide phases during their nucleation on Pt nanoparticle seeds. We showed experiments which allude to two potential synthetic pathways for the formation of CuFeSe2 and CuInSe2. It was observed that the CuInSe2 forms through a multistep pathway starting with the initial nucleation of Cu2-xSe followed by the incorporation of the In3+ through a high temperature cation exchange reaction. However, CuFeSe2 was shown to most likely to form by direct nucleation. The differences in these reactions were observed when their simultaneous nucleation was attempted, where only Pt--CuIn¬Se2 formed.

The first chapter explains the theory used to analyze the data and the properties expected for condensed phase materials at the nanoscale. The second chapter probes the magnetic and EPR results for Mn doped CdSe under different synthetic environments. The process of annealing was found to cluster the manganese resulting in ferromagnetic exchange. The third chapter involves further analysis of Mn doped CdSe with the possibility of sulfur incorporation from the synthetic strategy employed where a spin wave was observed due to the ferromagnetic interactions in the sample. The presence of carriers helps explain reasons for the observation of a spin wave in Mn:CdSSe as observed in the heat capacity measurements. The fourth chapter is the magneto-absorption study on the Mn doped CdSSe in comparison to CdSSe. The sulfur incorporation may have affected the results. The fifth chapter is a study of sulfur incorporation in CdSe and the effects on the magneto-photoluminescence properties. The techniques employed include a magnetic field to separate the spin levels and determine which of the states was influenced by the sulfur incorporation. The sixth chapter involves an exciton temperature dependent study of CdSSe in a magnetic field.

Book excerpt: Metal nanoparticles (NPs), passivated with ligands, have received vast interest for their distinct optical, chemical, electrical and catalytic properties in comparison to bulk materials. These properties are useful for many applications such as catalysis, sensors, fuel cells, and electrochemical energy storage. For such applications, it is important to know the electrochemical behavior of NPs. To examine the redox chemistry and catalytic behavior of NPs for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), capped metal NPs are synthesized and immobilized on an electrode surface for voltammetric studies. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is used as capping ligand during synthesis of highly stable water soluble Ag NPs using a new synthetic route. Subsequent characterization of NPs is done using UV-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (NcAFM) for determination of size, structure and composition. The NPs are immobilized on an electrode surface using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly followed by characterization of the surface using NcAFM. Electrochemical behavior of these NPs is studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV) in a single layer (1L) layer-by-layer (LbL) film of NPs which showed the redox driven phase transformation of Ag NPs to AgCl in aqueous chloride and to Ag 2 O in aqueous hydroxide solutions. The particle size remains stable during the reversible phase transformations. Results from a series of experiments on multilayer film suggest a non-linear propagation of charge through the film with an increase in the number of layers during the phase transformation of Ag NPs to AgCl and Ag 2 O NPs. The catalytic activity of ATP-Ag NPs for ORR in aqueous hydroxide solution is examined on a single LbL film of NPs and compared with bulk polycrystalline Ag using CV and rotating disk electrode (RDE) experiments. The active electrochemical surface area of NPs available for ORR is calculated using underpotential deposition (UPD) of lead (Pb) on Ag NPs. RDE data is analyzed to determine the ORR rate constant and the number of electrons (n-value) involved in oxygen reduction. Analysis of Koutecky-Levich (K-L) plots indicates an n-value between 3 and 4 with a higher n-value under some conditions for the NPs than for bare polycrystalline Ag.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2018 in the subject Chemistry - Anorganic Chemistry, grade: 10, , language: English, abstract: Nanoscience is the study of phenomena exhibited by materials at atomic, molecular and macromolecular levels, of dimensions ranging from a few nanometres to less than a hundred nanometres. In chemistry, this size range has been associated with colloids, micelles, polymer molecules and similar structures. In physical and electrical engineering, nanoscience is often associated with quantum behaviour, and electron behaviour in nanoscale structures. The area of research in the field of nanotechnology is as diverse as physics, chemistry, material science, microbiology, biochemistry and also molecular biology. The interface of nanotechnology in combination with biotechnology and biomedical engineering has emerged with the use of nanoscale structures in diagnosis, gene sequencing, and drug delivery. Nanoparticles have attracted great interest in recent years because of their unique chemical and physical properties, which are different from those of either the bulk materials or single atoms. Nanostructure materials have potential applications in ceramics, optoelectronics and catalysis. Research on the synthesis of nanomaterials using metal complexes as precursors have been less reported. Application of metal complexes as precursors may be helpful to control the physical properties of metal nanoparticles. In the last few years, researchers have characterized the tunable properties by altering the nanostructure size, shape, and chemical composition and have developed reproducible strategies to make nanostructures of desired properties. It has been already proved that by controlling the size of the particle and manipulating surface structures of the semiconductor materials, the electronic, magnetic, mechanical, and chemical properties can be modified to suit a wide range of device application in many fields. The present book deals with the synthesis of Schiff base complexes of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Hg(II) with different sulphur containing ligand and preparation of metal sulphide nanoparticle by the thermal decomposition of complex precursor. During this academic journey four new sulphur containing ligands and their thirty complexes were synthesized. These ligands and complexes were characterized by spectroscopic methods like UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2D-NMR, FAB-MS / ESI-Ms spectra.
