Book excerpt: Amines and Schizophrenia is a collection of articles that survey and discuss the biochemical basis present, if any, in schizophrenia, focusing on the role of certain amines. The book discusses certain hypotheses dealing with the field of bio-chemistry as the basis for diseases such as schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, and related diseases. Discussions start with the properties of mescaline, because the psychotic effect of the drug has some aspects similar to that of a schizophrenic syndrome. One paper examines the presence of certain amines, such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in the brain, including their role in the synaptic transmission of nerve impulses in the central nervous system. Other papers review the role of derangements of tryptophan metabolism in psychotic behavior; the metabolic interrelationships of tryptophan and methionine in mental illness; and the results obtained with psychomimetic and non-psychomimetic congeners of three classes of indoleamines including LSD. The book gives more details on the actions of various biological amines on single neurons in the limbic system of the brain. The text also evaluates the use of hallucinogenic drugs in considering their heuristic value in the study of the biochemical basis of mental function. Book excerpt: Since the development of pharmacoconvulsive therapy in 1934 and of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in 1938, ECT has proven far more valuable than just the intervention of last resort. In comparison with psychotropic medications, we now know that ECT can act more effectively and more rapidly, with substantial clinical improvement that is often seen after only a few treatments. This is especially true for severely ill patients -- those with severe major depression with psychotic features, acute mania with psychotic features, or catatonia. For patients who are physically debilitated, elderly, or pregnant, ECT is also safer than psychotropic medications. The findings of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Task Force on ECT were published by the APA in 1990 as the first edition of The Practice of Electroconvulsive Therapy, inaugurating the development of ECT guidelines by groups both within the United States and internationally. Since then, advances in the use of this technically demanding treatment prompted the APA to mandate a second edition. The updated format of this second edition presents background information followed by a summary of applicable recommendations for each chapter. This close integration of the recommendations with their justifications makes the material easy to read, understand, and use. To further enhance usability, recommendations critical to the safe, effective delivery of treatment are marked with the designation "should" to distinguish them from recommendations that are advisable but nonessential (with the designations "encouraged," "suggested," "considered"). The updated content of this second edition, which spans indication for use of ECT, patient evaluation, side effects, concurrent medications, consent procedures (with sample consent forms and patient information booklet), staffing, treatment administration, monitoring of outcome, management of patients following ECT, and documentation, as well as education, and clinical privileging. Part III describes the best-known conditioning techniques applied in human testing, particularly those which are applicable for diagnostic purposes, is discussed. Part IV is concerned with clinical applications of the method and discusses the findings and the implications that it has for psychopathology and therapy or, in general, for psychiatry. Part V contains a critical evaluation of the matter presented, followed by a bibliography and index. Conditioning Behavior and Psychiatry describes the development of conditioning procedures since the concept was first introduced. It is primarily concerned with the analysis of elementary and complex behavioral observations, of neurophysiological and neuropathological discoveries as seen from the standpoint of psychiatric disorders. The psychiatric view presented is, not purely the Pavlovian, but a modern approach to psychiatry stemming from a Pavlovian orientation. Thomas A. Ban is professor emeritus of psychiatry at Vanderbilt University. His research has dealt with schizophrenia and psychophamacology. He is the author of Depression and the Tricyclic Andidepressants, Assessment of Depression and Psychopharmacology among others. W. Horsley Gantt was founder of the Pavlovian Laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He wrote numerous articles and books and is credited with translating several of Ivan Pavlov's works into English and introduced theories of the higher nervous system into British and American psychiatry.
