Book Synopsis Atlantic Creoles in the Age of Revolutions by : Jane G. Landers
Download or read book Atlantic Creoles in the Age of Revolutions written by Jane G. Landers and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sailing the tide of a tumultuous era of Atlantic revolutions, a remarkable group of African-born and African-descended individuals transformed themselves from slaves into active agents of their lives and times. Big Prince Whitten, the black Seminole Abraham, and General Georges Biassou were “Atlantic creoles,” Africans who found their way to freedom by actively engaging in the most important political events of their day. These men and women of diverse ethnic backgrounds, who were fluent in multiple languages and familiar with African, American, and European cultures, migrated across the new world’s imperial boundaries in search of freedom and a safe haven. Yet, until now, their extraordinary lives and exploits have been hidden from posterity. Through prodigious archival research, Jane Landers radically alters our vision of the breadth and extent of the Age of Revolution, and our understanding of its actors. Whereas Africans in the Atlantic world are traditionally seen as destined for the slave market and plantation labor, Landers reconstructs the lives of unique individuals who managed to move purposefully through French, Spanish, and English colonies, and through Indian territory, in the unstable century between 1750 and 1850. Mobile and adaptive, they shifted allegiances and identities depending on which political leader or program offered the greatest possibility for freedom. Whether fighting for the King of Kongo, England, France, or Spain, or for the Muskogee and Seminole chiefs, their thirst for freedom helped to shape the course of the Atlantic revolutions and to enrich the history of revolutionary lives in all times.
Book Synopsis Calderon and the Baroque Tradition by : Kurt Levy
Download or read book Calderon and the Baroque Tradition written by Kurt Levy and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calderón and the Baroque Tradition is the outcome of a tricentennial commemoration of the seventeenth century Spanish poet and dramatist, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and a tribute to a distinguished tradition in Calderonian studies at the University of Toronto. A major dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age and a master of the auto sacramental genre, Calderón produced some one hundred and twenty comedias and eighty autos during his rather colourful lifetime. This volume assembles an impressive collection of essays relating the baroque artistic tradition to such aspects of Calderón's theatre as the use of music, mythology, costume, and his distinctive dramatic technique. It will be of interest and value both to students of Spanish drama and Hispanic life in general and to followers of Calderón in particular.

Download or read book Calderón written by Robert ter Horst and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Pedro Calderón de la Barca was one of the greatest and most prolific playwrights of Spain's Golden Age, most of his nonallegorical comedias—118 in all—have remained unknown. Robert ter Horst presents here the first full-length study of these works, a sustained, meditative analysis dealing with more than 80 plays, conveying a sense of the whole of Calderón's secular theater. To approach so vast a body of literature, Mr. ter Horst examines the meaning and function in Calderón of three broad subjects—myth, honor, and history—the warp threads across which the playwright weaves a subtle tapestry of contrasts, dualities, and conflicts: the private person versus the public person, the inner realm versus the outer, masculine against feminine, poet against prince. The Calderón who emerges is a consciously consummate artist whose lifelong study was the passions of the human mind and body. In addition, he is seen as a synthesizer of his Spanish literary heritage and especially as a brilliant adapter of Cervantes' insights to the stage. Robert ter Horst's profound and far-ranging analysis sheds light on many fine works previously neglected and finds new depths in such supreme achievements as No hay cosa como callar, El segundo Escipión, and La vida es suefio.
Book Synopsis Conscience on Stage by : Hilaire Kallendorf
Download or read book Conscience on Stage written by Hilaire Kallendorf and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no accident that some variation of the question 'What should I do?' appears in over three-quarters of the comedic plays of the Spanish Golden Age. Casuistical dialogue was a concern, even an obsession, of Spanish playwrights during the seventeenth century, many of whom were educated by Jesuit casuists. Conscience on Stage is a study of casuistry or case morality as the foundation for a poetics of seventeenth-century Spanish >em>comedias. Hilaire Kallendorf examines the Jesuit upbringing and casuistical education of major playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age, many of whom were also priests, and introduces the vocabulary of casuistry, as expressed in both confessors' manuals and in stage plays. Engaging issues of class, gender, and age to explore scenes of advice-giving and receiving, she demonstrates how the culture-specific construct of 'conscience' in early modern Spain can be recovered by means of a Foucauldian genealogy, which enlists the skills of philology at the service of a larger vision of the history of ideas. This study outlines and reiterates the relationship of theatre to casuistry, the Jesuit contributions to Spanish literary theory and practice, and the importance of casuistry for the study of early modern subjectivity.

Book Synopsis Sins of the Fathers by : Hilaire Kallendorf
Download or read book Sins of the Fathers written by Hilaire Kallendorf and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sins of the Fathers considers sins as nodes of cultural anxiety and explores the tensions between competing organizational categories for moral thought and behaviours, namely the Seven Deadly Sins and the Ten Commandments. Hilaire Kallendorf explores the decline and rise of these organizational categories against critical transformations of the early modern period, such as the accession of Spain to a position of world dominance and the arrival of a new courtly culture to replace an old warrior ethos. This ground-breaking study is the first to consider Spanish Golden Age comedias as an archive of moral knowledge. Kallendorf has examined over 800 of these plays to illustrate how they provide insight into aspects of early modern experience such as food, sex, work, and money. Finally, Kallendorf engages the theoretical terminology of Marxist literary criticism to demonstrate the inherent ambiguity of cultural change.
Book Synopsis Artifice and Invention in the Spanish Golden Age by : Stephen Boyd
Download or read book Artifice and Invention in the Spanish Golden Age written by Stephen Boyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corpus of literary works shaped by the Renaissance and the Baroque that appeared in Spain during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had a transforming effect on writing throughout Europe and left a rich legacy that scholars continue to explore. For four decades after the Spanish Civil War the study of this literature flourished in Great Britain and Ireland, where many of the leading scholars in the field were based. Though this particular 'Golden Age' was followed by a decline for many years, there have recently been signs of a significant revival. The present book seeks to showcase the latest research of established and younger colleagues from Great Britain and Ireland on the Spanish Golden Age. It falls into four sections, in each of which works by particular authors are examined in detail: prose (Miguel de Cervantes, Francisco de Quevedo, Baltasar Gracian), poetry (The Count of Salinas, Luis de Gongora, Pedro Soto de Rojas), drama (Cervantes, Calderon, Lope de Vega), and colonial writing (Bernardo Balbuena, Hernando Dominguez Camargo, Alonso de Ercilla). There are essays also on more general themes (the motif of poetry as manna; rehearsals on the Golden Age stage; proposals put to viceroys on governing Spanish Naples). The essays, taken together, offer a representative sample of current scholarship in England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plot Twists and Critical Turns: Queer Approaches to Early Modern Spanish Theater offers readings of a variety of works of seventeenth-century Spanish theater from perspectives grounded in queer studies, and demonstrates that these plays, even given the limitations imposed by censorship, public taste, and their own conventional precepts, are shot through with gaps that allow one to perceive at least the outlines of an absent queer object if not overt examples of manifest challenges to gender conformity.
