Book Synopsis Glorious American Quilts by : Museum of American Folk Art
Download or read book Glorious American Quilts written by Museum of American Folk Art and published by Penguin Putnam. This book was released on 1996 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of America's largest collections of quilts - containing almost 400 examples at the time of this publication and steadily growing - belongs to the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. As it is a national, not a regional institution, the Museum does not restrict its collection by location, nor is it restricted by time period: The quilts have been made all over the country and range in date from the late-eighteenth to the late-twentieth century." "Until this publication, however, there has been no comprehensive guide to the Museum's quilts, almost all of which have been donated by collectors in the field. Highlights from the collection have been published and exhibited many times, but the purpose of this book is to provide an opportunity for quiltmakers, collectors, scholars, and others to explore the collection in depth. The comprehensive discussion of the quilts has been divided into eleven chapters that are illustrated with 141 color plates. This text is then followed by a catalog of the entire collection, which in turn contains forty-four black-and-white illustrations. Here, then, is a richly handsome and informative volume that will prove to be essential for all those fascinated by this category of American folk art."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Comfort and Glory by : Katherine Jean Adams
Download or read book Comfort and Glory written by Katherine Jean Adams and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quilts bear witness to the American experience. With a history that spans the early republic to the present day, this form of textile art can illuminate many areas of American life, such as immigration and settlement, the development of our nation’s textile industry, and the growth of mass media and marketing. In short, each quilt tells a story that is integral to America’s history. Comfort and Glory introduces an outstanding collection of American quilts and quilt history documentation, the Winedale Quilt Collection at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. This volume showcases 115 quilts—nearly one-quarter of the Winedale Collection—through stunning color photographs (including details) and essays about each quilt’s history and construction. The selections span more than two hundred years of American quiltmaking and represent a broad range of traditional styles and functions. Utility quilts, some worn or faded, join show quilts, needlework masterpieces, and “best” quilts saved for special occasions. Texas quilts, including those made in or brought to Texas during the nineteenth century, constitute a significant number of the selections. Color photographs of related documents and material culture objects from the Briscoe Center’s collections—quilting templates, a painted bride’s box, sheet music, a homespun dress, a brass sewing bird, and political ephemera, among them—enrich the stories of many of the quilts.

Fabric portrait artists and teachers, Phyllis Cullen and Cindy Richard, show you how to create amazing, true-to-life portraits! "It's All About the Face" was born when the authors realized there was little available instruction about how to quilt faces. Having taught the subject for years, they decided to collaborate. The book offers in-depth direction - even if you cannot draw, have never taken an art class or even a sewing class. Using large, full color, detailed images as examples, the authors lead the reader step by step through the process of: - Composing a portrait so it tells a story and WOWS the viewer - Using digital technology to reveal the values in every face - Selecting fabrics - Creating a totally recognizable fabric collage - Quilting your masterpiece by following anatomical contours The authors offer tips about lighting, taking reference photos, and photographing your finished quilts. They make recommendations about needles, thread, surface design, and even how to please the judges! Finally, Phyllis, who is also a doctor, touches on ways to keep your hands healthy. Cindy and Phyllis want you to succeed! They offer classes and workshops to support the book and stand ready to answer your questions and help you with your projects. They feel confident that anyone who follows their instructions will get a great start on the fascinating journey that is "All About the Face!"
Download or read book Quilting 6-Pack written by Rebecca Hinson and published by . This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quilting and Acolchar interpret the role of quilting in American life. The American block quilt is a uniquely American art form. Quilt blocks are made of pieces of cloth sewn together to make a pattern. Often quilts commemorate a marriage or birth, leaving a community, freedom, or even death. Women could not own personal property in any states until 1839, but they raised money for worthy causes by selling quilts at festivals and bazaars. Women supported abolition of slavery through their Underground Railroad (above), Slave Chain, and North Star quilts. As soldiers went to war or families settled the Western frontier, additional quilts were needed. Friendship quilts were made of blocks with messages from those left behind. Quilts were made as raffle prizes to raise money for both the Union and the Confederate armies. The Women¿s Christian Temperance Union publicized alcohol¿s threat to the family. They charged ten cents to add a signature to their quilts which would be raffled off. Their quilts were often blue and white like the Drunkard¿s Path pattern. The WCTU also supported an eight-hour work day, prison reform, vocational training, child care, and women¿s right to vote. American block quilts gave women a voice in a world in which they had no voice.
