Book Synopsis Lloyd Mifflin by : Paul A. W. Wallace
Download or read book Lloyd Mifflin written by Paul A. W. Wallace and published by DIANE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lloyd Mifflin (1846-1921), of Columbia, PA, has been better known as a poet than as a painter. His verse was praised in his lifetime by English & American critics, & he was even acclaimed as ¿America¿s Greatest Sonneteer.¿ Mifflin insisted, however, that he was at heart a painter; but he sold few pictures. The exhibition of his paintings in April 1965 marked the first occasion on which his work had been shown publicly. The canvases which were shown are but a small part of the Wm. Penn Museum¿s collection of Mifflin¿s works: drawings, watercolors, & oils, 14 volumes of his published books, & a number of manuscripts. This catalog provides a brief introduction, not just to the poet Lloyd Mifflin, nor even the painter, but to the whole man. Illustrations.

Book Synopsis The Social Life of Poetry by : C. Green
Download or read book The Social Life of Poetry written by C. Green and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-11-23 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Jewish publishers to Appalachian poets, Green s cultural study reveals the role of "Mountain Whites" in American racial history. Part One (1880-1935) explores the networks that created American pluralism, revealing Appalachia s essential role in shaping America s understanding of African Americans, Anglos, Jews, Southerners, and Immigrants. Drawing upon archival research and deft close readings of poems, Part Two (1934-1946) delves into the inner-workings of literary history and shows how diverse alliances used four books of poetry about Appalachia to change America s notion of race, region, and pluralism. Green starts with how Jesse Stuart and the Agrarians defended Southern whiteness, follows how James Still appealed to liberals, shows how Muriel Rukeyser put Appalachia at the center of anti-fascism, and ends with how Don West and the Progressives struggled to form interracial labor unions in the South.

Excerpt: "Her life, as well as her art, expressed her gift of song. She was a poet not only in singing, but no less in living. Her friendships were singularly wide and eclectic, determined always from the inner vision. They were the friendships of mutual recognition and of sympathetic-3- ministry. Her tenderness of feeling responded to every human need. Others might turn away from the unattractive; to her the simple fact that kindness was needed was a claim which she could not deny."

Download or read book Obiter Dicta written by Erick Verran and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stitched together over five years of journaling, Obiter Dicta is a commonplace book of freewheeling explorations representing the transcription of a dozen notebooks, since painstakingly reimagined for publication. Organized after Theodor Adorno's Minima Moralia, this unschooled exercise in aesthetic thought--gleefully dilettantish, oftentimes dangerously close to the epigrammatic--interrogates an array of subject matter (although inescapably circling back to the curiously resemblant histories of Western visual art and instrumental music) through the lens of drive-by speculation. Erick Verran's approach to philosophical inquiry follows the brute-force literary technique of Jacques Derrida to exhaustively favor the material grammar of a signifier over hand-me-down meaning, juxtaposing outer semblances with their buried systems and our etched-in-stone intuitions about color and illusion, shape and value, with lessons stolen from seemingly unrelatable disciplines. Interlarded with extracts of Ludwig Wittgenstein but also Wallace Stevens, Cormac McCarthy as well as Roland Barthes, this cache of incidental remarks eschews what's granular for the biggest picture available, leaving below the hyper-specialized fields of academia for a bird's-eye view of their crop circles. Obiter Dicta is an unapologetic experiment in intellectual dot-connecting that challenges much long-standing wisdom about everything from illuminated manuscripts to Minecraft and the evolution of European music with lyrical brevity; that is, before jumping to the next topic.
