Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joys of Traveling to Europe Europe: the dream destination for millions of Americans each year. Whether you first dreamt of the castles (and there are so many) as a child, or whether your interest is in the history and beauty of the countries, you cannot help but be enchanted by the glory and the diversity of Europe's countries. Today, what we think of as Europe is a group of countries that are either members of the European Union (EU) or those that are not. There are 27 EU countries, but this number doesn't include well-known European countries that you might still want to visit such as the United Kingdom or Norway. We'll discuss the EU and what impact it might have on your travels later in this report. From the warmth of Greece to the coldest parts of Norway, the landscape can change dramatically in just a few moments. As you travel through the different landscapes, you may pass everything from majestic, snow-capped mountains down to the brilliant white sand beaches of Spain, Italy, and Greece. No matter what kind of vacation you are looking for, you can find it in Europe. There are other reasons to see the continent, though. The rich cultural heritage and traditions of the countries have been charming Americans for centuries. It's rather incredible to realize that what we often consider 'old' in our country is modern in comparison to what you will see in Europe. Plus, so many of the traditions that you will see today have been happening in Europe for centuries in the same way. With the combination of architecture and events, you will find it easy to imagine yourself back in time to an era where some of your ancestors may have been living and working. That ancestry may be another reason for your visit to Europe. You may want to track down some long-lost relatives that perhaps remained in Europe while your great-grandparents made the voyage and took the risk to immigrate to the United States. Even if you haven't already located these distant cousins, you might know the town that your family comes from. If you visit the town and start asking questions, you'll be amazed at how much you can learn about your family from the locals. No matter what your reasons are for visiting, you will never regret the experience. Especially if you take the time to learn about the places you will be visiting before you go. It's an unfortunate fact that Americans have a reputation for being somewhat abrasive or rude when they visit European countries because they expect things to be the same as they are at home. If you can leave those expectations at home, you'll be able to see the way things operate in Europe as a natural result of their culture and their priorities. This attitude will also give you the best chance of being able to move past the label of tourist and experience more of the 'real' country.

Book excerpt: Whether the purpose is to soak up the scenery, raid the art galleries, or marry impoverished but titled Europeans, a million Americans invade Europe every year. In Americans Abroad, Foster Rhea Dulles recaptures the humor, romance, and sheer pleasure that are the trademarks of European travel. From the days of Abigail Adams to the present time, he tells the story of two centuries of American tourists in Europe. Writers and artists, diplomats and honeymooners, socialites and expatriates, clergymen and spies--they're all here, including some of the most eccentric characters in history: rustic Ben Franklin, a marten fur cap on his head, charming the most celebrated salons of Paris; Iowa Indians breakfasting with Disraeli; prudish Longfellow resisting temptations in the mountains of Spain; plus mysterious Louis Littlepage, General Tom Thumb, Dorothea Dix, jumping "Jim Crow," and many others. In Americans Abroad you see Europe through their eyes. Here is a Grand Tour that is truly different--a view of Paris and London, the Swiss Alps, the Grand Canal, the Italian hill towns, and the Riviera that will charm and delight you. If you have ever been to Europe, plan to go, or merely dream of a future European adventure, this book is a must on your reading shelf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Americans made their Grand Tour of Europe, what did they learn about themselves? While visiting Europe In 1844, Harry McCall of Philadelphia wrote to his cousin back home of his disappointment. He didn’t mind Paris, but he preferred the company of Americans to Parisians. Furthermore, he vowed to be “an American, heart and soul” wherever he traveled, but “particularly in England.” Why was he in Europe if he found it so distasteful? After all, travel in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was expensive, time consuming, and frequently uncomfortable. Being American in Europe, 1750–1860 tracks the adventures of American travelers while exploring large questions about how these experiences affected national identity. Daniel Kilbride searched the diaries, letters, published accounts, and guidebooks written between the late colonial period and the Civil War. His sources are written by people who, while prominent in their own time, are largely obscure today, making this account fresh and unusual. Exposure to the Old World generated varied and contradictory concepts of American nationality. Travelers often had diverse perspectives because of their region of origin, race, gender, and class. Americans in Europe struggled with the tension between defining the United States as a distinct civilization and situating it within a wider world. Kilbride describes how these travelers defined themselves while they observed the politics, economy, morals, manners, and customs of Europeans. He locates an increasingly articulate and refined sense of simplicity and virtue among these visitors and a gradual disappearance of their feelings of awe and inferiority.

Book excerpt: In a nation struggling to establish its own identity, all kinds of Americans, for all kinds of reasons, were enchanted with Europe. A European trip, whether extravagant or modest, could serve social advancement, aesthetic enrichment, or personal curiosity. Travel allowed men and women, the descendants of European settlers or African slaves, to shed their familiar surroundings and comfortable personas, adopt new roles, and measure themselves against the European experience. These travelers were often also writers. Throughout the nineteenth century, celebrated authors and beginners alike published newspaper columns, magazine articles, guidebooks, travel essays, letters, and novels based on their European journeys. In Going Abroad, Stowe examines not only classic works by such writers as Irving, Fuller, Twain, James, and Adams, but also lesser-known works by African-American authors, journalists, feminist writers, and diarists. Travel and the writing of it were important, Stowe argues, in molding a peculiarly democratic, yet essentially class-based, sense of personal and group identity. Combining literary and cultural analysis, he suggests new ways of understanding nineteenth-century Americans' concept of their nation and its place in the world. Originally published in 1994. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of migration will welcome Mark Wyman's new book on the elusive subject of persons who returned to Europe after coming to the United States. Other scholars have dealt with particular national groups... but Wyman is the first to treat... every major group.... Wyman explains returning to Europe as not just the fulfillment of original intentions but also the result of 'anger at bosses and clocks, nostalgia for waiting families,' nativist resentment and heavy-handed Americanization programs, and a complex of other problems.... Wyman's 'nine broad conclusions' about the returnees deserve to be read by everyone concerned with international migration.
