In this fun-filled trivia book, seasoned tax attorney Mike Kowis challenges readers to 250 questions about American taxation. This quiz book covers amusing tax quotes, history of U.S. taxation, the Internal Revenue Code, important case law, the Internal Revenue Service, tax forms, audits, politics, and much more! Plus you'll learn interesting factoids, such as: the U.S. government hired Walt Disney in the 1940s to make cartoons encouraging citizens to pay income tax; the Tax Code has 4 times more words than the Bible; and writings on the ancient artifact known as Rosetta Stone were mostly about taxes. Whether you are a seasoned tax practitioner, a history buff, or just a trivia junky looking for your next fix, you will surely enjoy testing your knowledge of American taxation. By day, Mike Kowis, Esq., is a mild-mannered tax attorney at a Fortune 500 company in Texas. By night, he swaps a three-piece suit for a pair of tights and a shiny red cape and then begins his duties as a modern-day SUPERHERO (a.k.a. "Adjunct Faculty Member") for one of the largest community colleges in the Lone Star State. In his spare time, he writes books and competes in off-road races. Book excerpt: "We all know the government taxes our income. Federal, state, and local taxes are withheld by employers, as are Social Security payments. But what about the many other ways the government covertly drains money from our wallets? Have you studied your cell phone bill? Customers in New York State pay an average of 24.36% in combined taxes on their wireless bills. They’re also charged for obscure services they didn’t ask for and don’t understand, like a universal service fund fee, an FCC compliance fee, a line service fee, and an emergency services fee. These aren’t taxes, strictly speaking. The government imposes these administrative and regulatory costs, and your wireless provider passes them along to you. What about your cable bill? Your power bill? Your trash bill? The cost of groceries, a gallon of gas, a cab ride, a hotel stay, and a movie ticket are all inflated by hidden fees. How much of what you pay at the grocery store, pump, airport, or the box office is really an indirect tax? In a series of short, pointed, fact-laden, humorous chapters, Kristin Tate exposes how up to half of your income is siphoned straight into federal, state, and city government coffers--and also where these hidden taxes and fees come from."--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking exposé of racism in the American taxation system from a law professor and expert on tax policy NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND FORTUNE • “Important reading for those who want to understand how inequality is built into the bedrock of American society, and what a more equitable future might look like.”—Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist Dorothy A. Brown became a tax lawyer to get away from race. As a young black girl growing up in the South Bronx, she’d seen how racism limited the lives of her family and neighbors. Her law school classes offered a refreshing contrast: Tax law was about numbers, and the only color that mattered was green. But when Brown sat down to prepare tax returns for her parents, she found something strange: James and Dottie Brown, a plumber and a nurse, seemed to be paying an unusually high percentage of their income in taxes. When Brown became a law professor, she set out to understand why. In The Whiteness of Wealth, Brown draws on decades of cross-disciplinary research to show that tax law isn’t as color-blind as she’d once believed. She takes us into her adopted city of Atlanta, introducing us to families across the economic spectrum whose stories demonstrate how American tax law rewards the preferences and practices of white people while pushing black people further behind. From attending college to getting married to buying a home, black Americans find themselves at a financial disadvantage compared to their white peers. The results are an ever-increasing wealth gap and more black families shut out of the American dream. Solving the problem will require a wholesale rethinking of America’s tax code. But it will also require both black and white Americans to make different choices. This urgent, actionable book points the way forward.

Book excerpt: This book is meant to give a broad overview of the biggest events about the Americaadmittedly with a few more trivial but very interesting tidbits along the wayin a way that delivers truth without getting into debate about bias. History can get dry, so humor is a great alleviator, but quite frankly, not all of it is very funny. Some of it is hard to hear, and some of it sparks debate, sometimes because of ones interpretation and sometimes because the version we learned hasnt been unlearned, and the new, not as pleasant information might come as a surprise. In this book, youll find 1,000 funny, weird, random, and little known facts about the United States of America. From its Constitution to its molasses explosion, from its presidents' false teeth to its cow-to-resident ratios, the U.S. is full of interesting facts. Did you know that its illegal to view a moose from an airplane in Alaska? Or that you can get a unicorn hunting license in Michigan?Via this book, we hope you could learn something and you take it with you. Nothings perfect, and some things are further from it than others, but truth is the only way to make sure one gets closer and closer to it. We hope you read this book with interest and sometimes maybe a little anger (though not at us), sometimes a lot of laughter, and you learn something about the United States, about your history, and about how even the things you love most in the world arent perfect and really dont have to be, as long as youre willing to help get them a little closer. We hope you and your friends enjoy this book!
