Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is considerable controversy over the Jewish demographic future. Some claim American Jewish fertility is sufficient for replacement of the parent generation if not for modest growth. Others believe that intermarriage will offset low fertility by opening the Jewish community to large numbers of Jews by choice. This essay, specially prepared for a 1986 American Jewish Committee Conference seek to provide realistic assessments of the demographic future of American Jewry. The authors emphasize the Jewish fertility in the U.S. has always lagged behind overall white American fertility; nor do they find any demographic gains through intermarriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having a religious preference and expressing it via a denominational choice is a fundamental way Americans relate to their society. Similarly, American Jews have divided their religion into four parts—Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and no preference Jews. This book focuses on how Jewish lifestyles are expressed through denominational affiliation. The development of American Jewish denominations is viewed as more a matter of individual choice than family heritage. The characteristics of individual adherents of the three major denominations vary systematically as does one's involvement both in local Jewish communities and in the community-at-large. The authors show that as one goes from Orthodox to no preference Jews, the extent of religious expression, ethnic attachments, and Jewish community involvement declines. They project the distribution of denominational preference in 2010 and conclude with recommendations for those who wish to see Jewish identity survive and thrive in America.

It is well known that Hassidim have significantly larger families on the average than do other Jews. However, non-Hassidic Jews are not homogeneous in family size, and it is, therefore, worthwhile exploring the factors which influence desired fertility among America's Jews generally. The present report is an analysis of data gathered in a study of American Jewish university students in the mid-1970s.

Book excerpt: In Jewish Population Studies 25 (Papers in Jewish Demography, 1989), 129-144. In this paper we present a systematic analysis of the relationships among educational attainment, marriage, intermarriage, and fertility, comparing Jews and non-Jews in the High School Class of 1972. They demonstrate the continuation of Jewish distinctiveness into the forth generation of young adults, with differences in education as well as in the relationships between education and family processes; and they demonstrate as well Jewish demographic continuity in the United States.

Future major review chapters will include such topics as Jewish Education in America, American Jewish Philanthropy, Israel/Diaspora Relations, American Jewish Demography, American Jewish History, LGBT Issues in American Jewry, American Jews and National Elections, Orthodox Judaism in the US, Conservative Judaism in the US, Reform Judaism in the US, Jewish Involvement in the Labor Movement, Perspectives in American Jewish Sociology, Recent Trends in American Judaism, Impact of Feminism on American Jewish Life, American Jewish Museums, Anti-Semitism in America, and Inter-Religious Dialogue in America. Part II-V of each volume will continue the tradition of listing Jewish Federations, national Jewish organizations, Jewish periodicals, and obituaries. But to this list are added lists of Jewish Community Centers, Jewish Camps, Jewish Museums, Holocaust Museums, and Jewish honorees (both those honored through awards by Jewish organizations and by receiving honors, such as Presidential Medals of Freedom and Academy Awards, from the secular world). We expand the Year Book tradition of bringing academic research to the Jewish communal world by adding lists of academic journals, articles in academic journals on Jewish topics, Jewish websites, and books on American and Canadian Jews. Finally, we add a list of major events in the North American Jewish Community.
