Veisbaclt's equation was not evolved from natural causes, but it is the result of subjecting experimentally ascertained effects into interpretation as Weishaeh at the time had at his command. His argument in favor of the so established formula consisted in the statement that experimental results seemed to corroborate the formula. Weisbach collected with great care all experimental results obtained by experimenters, and he tnade use of those which he considered as most closely adapting themselves to the by him established equation. Book Synopsis The American Indian by : R. J. Rushdoony
Download or read book The American Indian written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before state health care or food stamps, before the creation of welfare ghettoes in our major cities, America’s first experiment with socialism and government dependency practically destroyed the American Indian. Government experts created the Indian reservations. America’s churches whole-heartedly supported it, convinced the reservation would be the key to winning souls for Christianity. In 1944 young R. J. Rushdoony arrived at the Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Nevada as a missionary to the Shoshone and the Paiute Indians. For eight years he lived with them, worked with them, ministered to them and listened to their stories. He came to know them intimately, both as individuals and as a people. This is his story, and theirs. It is also the story of an experiment that failed, disastrously—and exercise in statist paternalism and ineffective Christian meddling whose effects ravage the Indians to this day. The reservation system debased the people it was meant to serve, and the churches failed in their mission; until, in the end, the proud and resourceful Indian was transformed into “a defeated man, lacking in character.” This is Rushdoony’s eyewitness testimony to that failure. Today, as America’s leaders expand the welfare state and radically transform the entire nation, we’d do well to reconsider this first experiment in government dependency and a Christianity stripped of God’s law—before all of the United States is transformed into a massive reservation on a continental scale. Rushdoony’s description of our past is also an indictment of our statist future.

Download or read book Hurdy-gurdy written by Tim Seibles and published by Cleveland St U Poetry Cntr. This book was released on 1992 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. African American Studies. "From the 'sweet scat' and 'jump rope hymns' of wonder and wistfulness to the transformational, lithe, sexually charged energy of jazz, HURDY-GURDY earnestly explores the differences between what we want, what we get, and what we must be willing to pursue at any cost. This is an exciting book at once fluid, shapely, and steady as stone whose tensions lead us to an authentic meditative wholeness." Mark Cox "This is not a poetry of the highfalutin violin nor the somber cello, but a melody you heard somewhere that followed you home. Elegant and silly, irreverent, fun and funny, Tim Seibles' poetry celebrates the spirit's little moments of holy joy." Sandra Cisneros"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Back in 1994, when David Rowbotham released his New and Selected Poems, 1945-1993, a flurry of reviews appeared in the major newspapers and magazines remarking on how richly Rowbotham deserved more recognition as one of Australia's major poets of the past century. But if he is the most major of Australia's neglected poets, what is remarkable is that Rowbotham has continued to write sixty years on, in a confident and lucid voice that transcends single continents and cultures. POEMS FOR AMERICA is certain to earn Rowbotham that elusive literary Oscar.

Book Synopsis Imagining Native America in Music by : Michael V Pisani
Download or read book Imagining Native America in Music written by Michael V Pisani and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive look at musical representations of native America from the pre colonial past through the American West and up to the present. The discussion covers a wide range of topics, from the ballets of Lully in the court of Louis XIV to popular ballads of the nineteenth century; from eighteenth-century British-American theater to the musical theater of Irving Berlin; from chamber music by Dvoˆrák to film music for Apaches in Hollywood Westerns. Michael Pisani demonstrates how European colonists and their descendants were fascinated by the idea of race and ethnicity in music, and he examines how music contributed to the complex process of cultural mediation. Pisani reveals how certain themes and metaphors changed over the centuries and shows how much of this “Indian music,” which was and continues to be largely imagined, alternately idealized and vilified the peoples of native America.
