Book Synopsis Magnetic Resonance Imaging by : Robert W. Brown
Download or read book Magnetic Resonance Imaging written by Robert W. Brown and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition explores contemporary MRI principles and practices Thoroughly revised, updated and expanded, the second edition of Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Physical Principles and Sequence Design remains the preeminent text in its field. Using consistent nomenclature and mathematical notations throughout all the chapters, this new edition carefully explains the physical principles of magnetic resonance imaging design and implementation. In addition, detailed figures and MR images enable readers to better grasp core concepts, methods, and applications. Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Second Edition begins with an introduction to fundamental principles, with coverage of magnetization, relaxation, quantum mechanics, signal detection and acquisition, Fourier imaging, image reconstruction, contrast, signal, and noise. The second part of the text explores MRI methods and applications, including fast imaging, water-fat separation, steady state gradient echo imaging, echo planar imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging, and induced magnetism. Lastly, the text discusses important hardware issues and parallel imaging. Readers familiar with the first edition will find much new material, including: New chapter dedicated to parallel imaging New sections examining off-resonance excitation principles, contrast optimization in fast steady-state incoherent imaging, and efficient lower-dimension analogues for discrete Fourier transforms in echo planar imaging applications Enhanced sections pertaining to Fourier transforms, filter effects on image resolution, and Bloch equation solutions when both rf pulse and slice select gradient fields are present Valuable improvements throughout with respect to equations, formulas, and text New and updated problems to test further the readers' grasp of core concepts Three appendices at the end of the text offer review material for basic electromagnetism and statistics as well as a list of acquisition parameters for the images in the book. Acclaimed by both students and instructors, the second edition of Magnetic Resonance Imaging offers the most comprehensive and approachable introduction to the physics and the applications of magnetic resonance imaging.

Book Synopsis Cardiovascular Pharmacogenetics by : Martin R. Wilkins
Download or read book Cardiovascular Pharmacogenetics written by Martin R. Wilkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-12-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Human Genome Project was sold to the general public largely on the basis that a complete picture of the structure of human DNA would lead to new and better medicines. These medicines would be better because they would be tailored to individual patients, maximising the chances of a therapeutic response and mi nimising the risks of an adverse event. Taking the idea further, pundits have pre dicted that the time will come when we could carry our DNA on a card which could be read rapidly and enable the physician to choose the best drug. This is the future. This is pharmacogenetics. When the draft human DNA sequence was announced and scientists were as ked how this would help drug development, the example most frequently given was the debrisoquine model - where poor metabolisers of this hypotensive agent are exposed to higher plasma levels from a standard dose and at risk of collapse from excessive hypotension. This observation was made over 20 years ago and predated designs to sequence the human genome. Nonetheless, it raised aware ness of variation in drug metabolism and was correctly assigned to genetic poly morphisms affecting CYP2D6. Together with the discovery of pseudocholinestera se deficiency, it marked the birth of pharmacogenetics. The debrisoquine example is an interesting one and worthy of further analysis.

Book Synopsis The Health Robbers by : Stephen Barrett
Download or read book The Health Robbers written by Stephen Barrett and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And it answers such questions as: "Are 'organic' foods worth their extra cost?" "Can acupuncture cure anything?" "Will vitamin B[subscript 12] shots pep me up?" "Can diet cure arthritis?" "Will spinal adjustments help my health?" "Will amino acids 'pump up' my muscles?" "Where can reliable information be obtained?" and "What's the best way to get good medical care?" Even if the answers to some of these questions seem obvious, the details in this volume, written in an informative, highly readable, and easy-to-understand style, will astound you. Quackery often leads to harm because it turns ill people away from legitimate and trusted therapeutic procedures. However, its heaviest toll is in financial loss not only to those who pay directly, but to everyone who pays for bogus treatments through taxes, insurance premiums, and other ways that are less obvious.
