Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Geological Classification and Nomenclature Tun movement in favor of the uniformity of nomenclature, started by the International Geological Congress, although prema ture, calls for some remarks on the actual standing of American classifications. I shall confine myself to stratigraphy and the history of American nomenclature; the eruptive rocks being left apart. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Geologic Formation Names: Bibliography, Synonymy and Distribution This work not only presents a list of formation names, and their synonymy and correlations as given by authors, but-also serves as a bibliography of the literature describing each formation. Mere men tions of occurrence were not entered, but it was intended to include descriptions of a formation which defined it either wholly or in part. It is probably true that the discrimination as to what is a sufficient description to entitle the reference to be included in this catalogue has not been of such a uniform character as it would have been if the prep aration of the catalogue had been wholly the work of one person; but it is not considered less valuable 'on this account, since all the really important descriptions are believed to have been included. No attempt has been made to indicate the synonymy or taxonomic value of any formation except as it was given by the author of the reference cited. It is intended to refer the investigator to the litera ture of any North American geologic formation name, and he must exercise his own judgment as to its value and standing as a formation name. The work of preparing this bulletin has been in progress for nearly three years. It has been interrupted from time to time by other office and field work of the-author. During the winter of 1899 - 1900 it became evident that this work must be completed at once for the use of members of the United States Geological Survey in assigning names to the formations which were being delineated on the folios forming the Geologic Atlas of the United States. The Director of the Survey requested the following geologists to assist in completing the work: Messrs. M. R. Campbell, N. H. Darton, J. S. Diller, G. H. Girty, C. W. Hayes, F. H. Knowlton, F. L. Ransome, G. O. Smith, A. C. Spencer, T. W. Stanton, J. A. Taff, T. W. Vaughan, and David White. The literature that then remained to be examined was apportioned among these gentlemen, and since that time the material has been brought down to January 1, 1901, by the author. The methods of preparing this material, previously adopted, were followed with as much uniformity as was possible, and the author, as well as geologists in general, is greatly indebted to these gentlemen who assisted in bringing the work to an early completion. Geological Survey, 1977 Since 1971 the Subcommission on Precambrian Stratigraphy of the International Geological Sciences has come closer to a consensus on at least the gross subdivision of the Precambrian. James (1978) has presented the recommendations of the 1977 meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, where the subcommission voted to accept, as a first step, a two fold division of the Precambrian into Archean (archaean) and Proterozoic Eons with the boundary defined as m.y. This corresponds to the boundary of Precambrian W and X of the Survey's present scale. The Chief Geologist has approved usage of the terms Archean and Proterozoic. Pending international agreement on subdivision of the Archean, rocks of Archean age will be classified simply Archean and the old designation of Precambrian W is abandoned. Pending international agreement on subdivision of the Proterozoic, the subdivisions X, Y, and Z of the Survey's present Precambrian scale are continued as its subdivisions (see Major Stratigraphic and Time Divisions chart below). The previously used rock stratigraphic and time designations for the Precambrian given in the accompanying listing of nomenclatural changes were used by the authors in reports submitted to the Geologic Names Committee before the new scheme was adopted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Use of the Name Taconic It is a creed among geologists, a creed which has just received a new sanction and acknowledgment at the meeting of the Com mission for the uniformity of nomenclature of the International Geological Congress at Geneva, in August last, that 110 system of stratified rocks is accepted as independent and separate, unless it contain a special fauna. Sedgwick did not find a single fossil in the lower part, of what he called, in 1835, the Cambrian sys =tem, and he had 110 right to include it in the Cambrian. We have there two systems of strata as well marked and separated as any of the different systems in existence in our classifications. The Taconic system is the only Terrain 01° division of the sec ond order that can be claimed by American geologists in the gen eral classification of the strata of the world; and to surrender it it into the hands of the English is to give up the only claim we have to be recognized as original discoverers. Certainly, we shall preserve also all the classifications of the divisions of the third (divisions), fourth groups) and fifth (beds), orders special to' America; and on that account thereis not the smallest danger to be apprehended of their being suppressed or superseded by European geologists. But it is a patriotic duty for as Americans to preserve and keep religiously, the fact that here, among the mountain °anges which separate the Hudson river and Lake Champlain from the Connecticut river and the Green mountains, the great system, containing the Primordial fauna, was first discovered, pointed out and named. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supai Group: Subdivision and Nomenclature Probably the first geologist to carefully consider subdivision of the Supai Formation into logical, readily recognizable units was F. E. Matthes of the us. Geological Survey. In making a topographic map of the Bright Angel quadrangle in 1902-3, he noticed that the red beds of this formation, together with the overlying Hermit Shale, characteristically eroded into three prominent cliffs, interspersed among four well developed slopes. The discrimination of these topographic units was called to my attention by Matthes in the 1930's in connection with my studies of the Supai Formation. A field classification that proved useful in recording data at that time and in all subsequent work resulted. Subdivision of the Supai on the basis of topographic expression, used during the present field-investigation, recognized the following units: Upper cliff unit, locally includes a receding ledge unit (esplanade cliff) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Geological Railway Guide: Giving the Geological Formation at Every Railway Station, With Altitudes Above Mean Tide-Water, Notes on Interesting Places on the Routes, and a Description of Each of the Formations All the rock-formations which appear on the surface of the globe, have been scientifically classified by geologists, according to the order in which they are found lying one upon another, and by the fossils they contain, and for our object may be conveniently included in twenty divisions or groups. In this work, the table of the names of the formations, groups and systems, published by Prof. J. D. Dana in his Manual of Geolog and in his Text Book of Geology, has been taken as the general basis, by the geologists of many of the states who have assisted in preparing the following guide, but other valuable tables and especially one arranged by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, a general or combined table, and a list for each state at the beginning of the proper chapter, are also given. Numbers are attached to the names of the groups wherever they occur, making 20 in all. The subordinate members of each group, which are called formations, have the same number, but these sub-divisions are distinguished by the addition of small letters, a, b, 0, etc., thus making in all 40 sub-divisions. By this means, the reader, although not familiar with geological tables, is at once enabled to see to what part of the general series any formation belongs, number 1 designating the oldest and number 20 the upper and last formed of all. Wherever the formations are found, they occur in the order as they are numbered, but the series in nature is never full, and in almost every locality one or more members of it are wanting. The true method by which each of the great stratified formations is distinguished is by its own characteristic fossils, but these descriptions, having been prepared for travelers, are confined to the general aspect of the rocks as seen in passing them on the railways. They are intended to be popular rather than scientific, informing the reader what the formations are, what they look like, and their useful and valuable characters, qualities, and productions. It must also be borne in mind that this is a country of vast dimensions, and that the formations undergo important changes in their lithological character from place to place.
