The researcher intended to find out the challenges and difficulties that the international students from British colonies in Africa may experience as they were pursuing their academic degrees in the United States. This study used an online survey with 32 participants who were current students in different universities and colleges in the Unites States. Based on the findings, the investigator found that the majority of the participants experienced difficulties and challenges when they started college or university studies in the United States. Also, this study revealed that most of the participants indicated that they did not realize the difference in grammar and vocabulary when they were studying English in their home countries. Therefore, this study revealed that most of the participants learned the differences in grammar and vocabulary in the United States.--

This book addresses these and many other challenges that international students will face on a college campus. The second edition offers updates in the post-9/11 world regarding entering a U.S. university. The Accent of Successwill help students overcome the initial myths and fears related to visas and will help them understand higher education in the United States. This book also provides students with insight into development of their critical-thinking skills and helps their understanding of American culture.

Book excerpt: This book is about international students from Asia studying at American universities in the age of globalization. It explores significant questions, such as: Why do they want to study in America? How do they make their college choices? To what extent do they integrate with domestic students, and what are the barriers for intergroup friendship? How do faculty and administrators at American institutions respond to changing campus and classroom dynamics with a growing student body from Asia? Have we provided them with the skills they need to succeed professionally? As they are preparing to become the educational, managerial and entrepreneurial elites of the world, do Asian international students plan to stay in the U.S. or return to their home country? Asian students constitute over 70 percent of all international students. Almost every major American university now faces unprecedented enrollment growth from Asian students. However, American universities rarely consider if they truly understand the experiences and needs of these students. This book argues that American universities need to learn about their Asian international students to be able to learn from them. It challenges the traditional framework that emphasizes adjustment and adaptation on the part of international students. It argues for the urgency to shift from this framework to the one calling for proactive institutional efforts to bring about successful experiences of international students.

Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, around 770,000 people - just one in six school leavers - attended a British university or polytechnic. Now there are over 2.3 million students in Higher Education - almost half of all school leavers. But has this huge growth in 'Uni' really been the great success that politicians and universities would have us believe? After all, what's the point of having a degree if one in every two people has one and if less than one in ten students on many courses will find a graduate job? THE GREAT UNIVERSITY CON exposes the truth behind the massive expansion of Britain's university sector - millions of graduates with useless degrees in pointless subjects from third-rate universities with little chance of finding a graduate job but with a lifetime of unrepayable debt.
