Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the language of vocation was born in a religious context, the contributors in this volume demonstrate that it has now taken root within the broad framework of higher education and has become intertwined with a wide range of concerns. This volume makes a compelling case for vocational reflection and discernment in undergraduate education today, arguing that it will encourage faculty and students alike to venture out of their narrow disciplinary specializations and to reflect on larger questions of meaning and purpose. In conversation with a growing range of scholarly resources, these essays advance the cause of vocational reflection and discernment well beyond its occasional mention in general education courses and career placement offices. The book's thirteen contributors all work in higher education, but they do so as biologists and musicians, sociologists and engineers, doctors and lawyers, college presidents and deans, and scholars of history, literature, and business administration. Together, they demonstrate that vocation has an important role to play across the entire range of traditional academic disciplines and applied fields. Regardless of major, all undergraduates need to consider their current and future responsibilities, determine the stories they will live by, and discover resources for addressing the tensions that will inevitably arise among their multiple callings. Vocation across the Academy will help to reframe current debates about the purpose of higher education. It underscores the important role that colleges and universities can play in encouraging students to reflect more deeply on life's most persistent questions and to consider how they might best contribute to the common good.

Book excerpt: In this volume Dr Geoffrey Elliot provides a critical account of the nature, extent and impact of government policy for the further education sector. He explores a range of responses to policy, exposing both intended and unintended consequences of the increased development of Human Resources Management and Quality Assurance system, and sets these in the context of competing lecturer and manager perspectives. He bases his theoretical focus on a study of a large urban FE college coming to terms with increasing pressures from market forces in vocational education. At a time of rapid change in FE this book offers useful and relevant information on: · the impact of government policy and college procedures upon lecturers' practice · the effects of the introduction of formal quality systems and quantitative performance indicators into the college · the conflict of professionals trying to balance the demands of students and managers · the resulting tensions between lecturers and senior college managers over resourcing, management styles and practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contentious debates over the benefits—or drawbacks—of a liberal education are as old as America itself. From Benjamin Franklin to the Internet pundits, critics of higher education have attacked its irrelevance and elitism—often calling for more vocational instruction. Thomas Jefferson, by contrast, believed that nurturing a student’s capacity for lifelong learning was useful for science and commerce while also being essential for democracy. In this provocative contribution to the disputes, university president Michael S. Roth focuses on important moments and seminal thinkers in America’s long-running argument over vocational vs. liberal education. Conflicting streams of thought flow through American intellectual history: W. E. B. DuBois’s humanistic principles of pedagogy for newly emancipated slaves developed in opposition to Booker T. Washington’s educational utilitarianism, for example. Jane Addams’s emphasis on the cultivation of empathy and John Dewey’s calls for education as civic engagement were rejected as impractical by those who aimed to train students for particular economic tasks. Roth explores these arguments (and more), considers the state of higher education today, and concludes with a stirring plea for the kind of education that has, since the founding of the nation, cultivated individual freedom, promulgated civic virtue, and instilled hope for the future.

Book excerpt: This book provides a study of diverse leadership development through the extraordinary journeys of ten retired presidents and chancellors who have left an indelible impact on higher education. Representing a rich multicultural background, each chapter tells a personal story of transformation and triumph, highlighting the various, non-traditional paths to senior leadership. Hailing from both private and public, two- and four-year institutions across the United States, these trailblazers showcase that excellence knows no bounds. Contributors reflect on the struggles and engagements with racialized ethnic realities and growing awareness of gender inequities. Discussion questions supply rich ground for meaningful engagement in book clubs, leadership classes, workshops, and institutes, prompting readers to plumb the depths of their own experiences in confronting justice, equity, and inclusion. Filled with captivating narratives touching on the common threads of shared values and invaluable life lessons that weave through diverse experiences, this book is a testament to the power of inspiration and motivation for those considering or dismissing their aspirations to achieve leadership roles in higher education.
