Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Citizenship IN view of the large number of textbooks on civics already available, some very decided reasons should be forthcoming from those who venture to add another one to the long list. Our first plea in justification of this volume is our belief that the books on government now offered to the schools have cer tain fundamental defects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship of the United States These laws, substantially the statutes enacted more than a hundred years ago when our population was less than four millions, and when it was the policy of our government to invite immigration, were ill adapted to our modern conditions, with a population of eighty mil lions and an influx of foreigners of more than a million annually. Under these laws lax and unsatisfactory methods of naturalization had grown up, opening the way to gross frauds against our citizenship, including perjury, false impersonation, and traffic in false and counterfeit certificates of citizenship. Such certificates were sometimes sold to alien criminals to secure their ad mission to the United States, and frequently to procure protection against their home governments. Cases have actually occurred where aliens have landed on our shores for the first time, having in their possession certificates entitling them to the full rights of American citizenship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship Of all political forms, the federal type is the most complex; and it is, therefore, little short of absurd to attempt, as do so many text-books on Civics, to explain to students who are without previous training the con stitutional relations of our elaborate system of national, state, and local governments, without first giving to them a knowledge of the nature of political authority, the purposes for which it exists, and the general gov ernmental means through which such purposes are attained. In the present work it is believed that this error has been avoided. The student is first given that information which is essential to an understanding of citizenship and government in general, before he is called upon to study the description of our own com plex government in particular. We are coming to see as never before the unity of all human relations. The business of government is not an isolated thing, nor is it a fixed and finished scheme. It is constantly changing and growing, like a live thing. It has a beginning in the family and home; it touches every neighborly relation; it is con cerned with the uses, the getting, spending, saving, and holding of money, and the rightful distribution of property. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Citizenship Course in United States History, Vol. 1 The History Committee began its work in 1913, holding its first meeting in Philadelphia at the time of the meeting of the Department of Superintendence of the National Education Association. This Committee consisted of five members, as follows: Wilbur F. Gordy, Hartford, Connecticut, Chair man; Philander P. Claxton, United States Commissioner of Education; Charles E. Chadsey, Dean, College of Education, University of Illinois, at that time Superintendent of Schools, Detroit, Michigan; James H. Van Sickle, Superintendent of Schools, Springfield, Massachusetts; and John W. Hall, Dean, School of Education, University of Nevada, at that time Head of Elementary Education Department, University of Cincinnati. From the first Mrs. Fannie Fern Andrews, Secretary of the American School Citizenship League, acted as Secretary-Treasurer of the Committee; and later on Mrs. John W. Hall was, by formal vote, made a member. Both, by their fruitful suggestions and wise counsel, materially strengthened the work of the Committee. Finally Mrs. Andrews took the responsibility of editing the Report and of arranging the final details for publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Citizenship Course in United States History, Vol. 3 In fact, the American Revolution, as fought out in campaigns and battles on American soil, was a civil war, and such a treatment of it, we believe, is in harmony with the facts. The bitter antagonism between the American Patriots and the American Tories is manifested in each of the two great phases of the war, namely (1) the struggle, up to July 4, 1776, for the rights of free-born Englishmen, and (2) after that date for political independence. I pledge myself, as a citizen and Knight of Columbus, to enlighten myself fully on my duties as a citizen and to conscientiously perform such duties entirely in the interest of my country and regardless of personal consequences. I pledge myself to do all in my power to preserve the integrity and purity of the ballot and to promote reverence and respect for law and order. I promise to practice my religion openly and consistently, but without ostentation and to so conduct myself in public affairs as to reflect nothing but credit upon our holy Church to the end that she may flourish and our country prosper to the greater honor and glory of God. Oath of the Knights of Columbus. The Parish School Department views with laudable pride the effective assistance of the Catholic elementary school system in every activity designed to plant in the lives of school children, a deeper and holier appreciation of the privileges and dignity of American citizenship. Conscious, too, of the effects of a sound moral training under religious sanction, it rejoices in the unfailing contributions which Catholic education is continually making to preserve our national ideals in the minds and hearts of our future citizens. Resolution of the Parish School Department of the Catholic Educational Association, June 26, 1919. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Citizenship: Yale Lectures Having been honored by selection to deliver the first course of these lectures I have felt that it was fitting to present a few plain, simple, commonplace truths in respect to those respon sibilities, thus laying, as it were, a foundation upon which succeeding lecturers might in a more ambitious way develop some particular form of responsibility, or some particular ap peal to noble action. With this in view I have prepared the following lectures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is the day when we register our desires; when we choose our representatives. Does every man and woman of voting age go out on Election Day and cast his vote? He does not. Is not that queer? For centuries man has demanded and fought for the right to vote. He has fought to have his vote count. The women fought as hard as the men. Yes, they fought harder. The women made the world ring with their shouts for the vote. All of us gained the vote only after a long and bitter struggle. This vote was born of battle and thunder and fury. Those who held the power over the people did not give it up easily. Slowly and painfully the common people fought their way toward the ballot. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the American Citizen IN many of the political writings of the day, there is a tendency to lay too much stress on the mechanism of government and of industry, and too little stress on the force by which this mechanism is kept at work. In recent educational movements, also, too much thought is perhaps given to the problem of preparing men and women to take their several places in a social machine, and too little to the development of that power and spirit upon which the perpetuation of our whole social order depends. From my public addresses and magazine articles of the past few years, I have tried to select those which emphasize the more neglected side of these questions, and to arrange them in a continuous series. In a book thus prepared, it is inevitable that there should be some repe tition and some apparent inconsistencies. If the reader is perplexed by any of these things, he will perhaps find the explanation in the date of the different utterances and the special conditions under which they were made public.
