Book excerpt: In recent years, globalization and the expansion of information technologies have reshaped managerial practices, forcing multinational firms to adjust business practices to different environments and domestic companies to adjust to their foreign competitors. In International Differences in the Business Practices and Productivity of Firms, a distinguished group of contributors examines the phenomenon of widespread differences in managerial practices across firms, establishments within firms, and countries. This volume brings together eight studies that combine qualitative and quantitative insider analysis of business practices such as the use of teams, incentive pay, lean manufacturing, and quality control, revealing the elements that determine which practices are adopted and why. International Differences in the Business Practices and Productivity of Firms offers a much-needed model for measuring the productivity and performance of international firms in a fast-paced global economy.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment continues the Office of Technology Assessment's (OTA) exploration of the meaning of industrial policy in the United States context, while also examining the industrial policies of several U.S. economic rivals. The major focus is on electronics, an area which virtually defines "high technology" of the 1980's. The assessment sets the characteristics of the technology itself alongside other forces that exert major influences over international competitiveness. Specific areas addressed include: electronics technology; structure, trade, and competitiveness in the international electronics industry; quality, reliability, and automation in manufacturing; role of financing in competitiveness and electronics; human resources (education, training, management); employment effects; national industrial policies; and U.S. trade policies and their effects. The report concludes by outlining five options for a U.S. industrial policy, drawing on electronics for examples of past and prospective impacts, as well as on OTA's previous studies of the steel and automotive industries. A detailed summary and introductory comments are included. Also included in appendices are case studies in the development and marketing of electronics products, a discussion of offshore manufacturing, and a glossary of terms used in the assessment. (JN)

Book excerpt: What can the successes and failures of the twentieth century teach us about an uncertain future in the twenty-first? Bill Emmott argues that the best way to think about the future is to look back at the past, at the forces that have shaped our world and at what they tell us about the things that really matter. Two questions ultimately rise above all others: Will America continue to lead the world and to protect its peace? And will we continue to accept capitalism or will it be challenged once again? 20:21 Vision provides the answers that matter for all our lives in the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis A Handbook of Productive Industrial Ethics by : Professor Samuel C. Obi
Download or read book A Handbook of Productive Industrial Ethics written by Professor Samuel C. Obi and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Handbook of Productive Industrial Ethics is written for all industrial workers, and also for all students who will be working in industrial environments upon graduation. The increasing need for good work ethics in industry was the major factor behind the conception of this book. American society and work environments are becoming so complex that individual workers are bombarded in different directions by ethical problems which they did not create. Too often, these workers are confused, in part, because society never really offered them the basic ethical foundation needed to respond adequately to the increasing demands of our complex world. This book is divided into six separate chapters that closely follow the different tenets of values upon which it is based. Chapter 1 (Introduction to Industrial Ethics) explains why our many industrial organizations are in their present situation. It also discusses the meanings and ramifications of ethics, and why the study of ethics is needed by everyone associated with these organizations. Chapter 2 deals with the topic of Industrial Responsibility, specifically from an industrial point of view. Chapter 3 discusses, from an organizational point of view, three key values that are closely identified with a worker as an individual: Honesty, Self-control, and Self-respect. The other critical values which the worker encounters in team or group work are covered in chapter 4, and include Fairness, Mutual Assistance, Tolerance of Diversity, and Respect for Others. To tie all the values together, the topic of Integrity is covered in chapter 5. Chapter 6 extends the ideas developed in previous chapters, by using real Case Situations to clarify misapplications of principles of industrial ethics. Samples of industrial professional codes of ethics are included as Appendices to aid readers identify with the professional ethics of their affiliated organizations.
