Beyond this point the Marxists have refused to do more than speculate, although the Utopian Mackaye has presented a minute plan of organization in his Pantocracy. ' The State Socialist Menger suggests that the municipality possess the power of appointing or discharging the managers of the labor group, and the Fabians expect that these " captains of industry " would rise through the various sub-groups until the group heads should form an industrial cabinet responsible only to the sovereign democracy.2 These in turn may have relations with similar officers in other lands until a complete international coopera 1 Am.-Farmer, p. 69, 209. 1 Gaylord in N. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and the American Spirit A noted author has urged the appointment in some leading university of a professorship of Amer ica. He would like to see there one man whose spe cial business it should be to teach the students that there is such a reality as American thought, that there are certain principles which belong to the Amer ican government, that there are certain feelings Which are experienced by none but an American, such cus toms as American customs, and that there has grown up a social order Which is distinctively Ameri can. Rev. Dr. Hale repudiates, of course, the no tion that science is one thing in Europe and another in the United States. American economics has no more existence than Belgian physics or Spanish chem istry. But the main point is beyond dispute. There is a social order which is distinctively American. It has been woven on the roaring loom of time by the American spirit. In these days When, as Mr. George J acob Holyoake has said, the social question is not only in the air, it fills the air, I have thought that a place is still open in an abundant literature for a discussion of the American answer to socialism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Jeremy Corbyn's left-led Labour Party and Bernie Sanders's 2016 presidential campaign revived a political idea many had thought dead. But what, exactly, is socialism? And what would a socialist system look like today? In The Socialist Manifesto, Bhaskar Sunkara, editor of Jacobin magazine, argues that socialism offers the means to achieve economic equality, and also to fight other forms of oppression, including racism and sexism. The ultimate goal is not Soviet-style planning, but to win rights to healthcare, education, and housing and to create new democratic institutions in workplaces and communities. The book both explores socialism's history and presents a realistic vision for its future. A primer on socialism for the 21st century, this is a book for anyone seeking an end to the vast inequities of our age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent American Socialism "I presume you have felt, as have I, the sting of criticism and censure - of misrepresentation because discussing this topic of socialism at all." These are words written to me in a letter recently received, by a friend who is professor of political economy in a prominent Western university. They indicate at once a difficulty in the way of the economist. The topics he discusses are so vital, that any presentation of them is bound to be misconstrued in some quarter. Nevertheless, there seems to be only one course for an honest man, which is to say his word and patiently endure misunderstanding and even malicious abuse. But it may not be out of place for me to state the purpose of this monograph. The aim of the present paper is so clear that only unfortunate experience in the past leads me to explain it in the preface. When my "French and German Socialism" was published, one ill-natured critic complained because my opinions were not distinguished from the opinions I was endeavoring to expound. This criticism was echoed in other places. Now it had not occurred to me that it was necessary' to thrust my opinions upon the reader of the history of French and German Socialism. In reading works covering like ground I had often been annoyed by childish criticism such as must occur to every boy, criticism thrust into the midst of the presentation of some theoretical system, so I resolved to abstain from anything of the kind and thought it sufficient to let the facts speak for themselves. The aim of this monograph is quite similar.. It is primarily a presentation and not a refutation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
