Book Synopsis Amenities and Rural Development by : Gary P. Green
Download or read book Amenities and Rural Development written by Gary P. Green and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many rural areas continue to experience depopulation and economic decline, others are facing rapid in migration, as well as employment and income growth. Much of this growth is due to the presence and use of amenity resources, broadly defined as qualities of a region that make it an attractive place to live and work. Rather than extracting natural resources for external markets, these communities have begun to build economies based on promoting environmental quality. Amenities and Rural Development explores the paradigmatic shift in how we view land resources and the potential for development in amenity-rich rural regions.
Book Synopsis The Economics of Amenities and Migration in the Pacific Northwest by : Brian E. Garber-Yonts
Download or read book The Economics of Amenities and Migration in the Pacific Northwest written by Brian E. Garber-Yonts and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews literature on the influence of nonmarket amenity resources on population migration. Literature reviewed includes migration and demographic studies; urban and regional economics studies of amenities in labor markets, retirement migration, and firm location decisions; nonmarket valuation studies using hedonic price analysis of amenity resource values; land use change studies; and studies of the economic development influence of forest preservation. A synthesis of the literature finds that the influence of amenities is consistently shown to be a positive factor contributing to population growth in urban and rural areas characterized by proximity to public forest lands. Beyond this broad finding, however, little research has been conducted at an appropriate scale to be directly useful in forest management and planning decisions. Areas for further research are identified.

Download or read book Outer Banks Visionaries: Building North Carolina's Oceanfront written by Clark Twiddy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreamers, Risk Takers, Innovators... The chain of barrier islands that skirt the coast of North Carolina from the Virginia border to Cape Lookout were once remote. Today the Outer Banks is one of America's most popular vacation destinations, welcoming millions of visitors each year. Like Walt Disney World or Las Vegas, the initial ideas around what is today a glittering vacation capital were, at one point, nothing more than a shared vision of what was possible. A series of dreamers fired the engines of the popular attraction to this scattering of sandy islands that resonates across much of the Eastern United States today. Author and Outer Banks native Clark Twiddy chronicles the region's journey from isolation to popularity through the stories of these innovators and risk-takers.
