Book Synopsis Heffo - A Brilliant Mind by : Liam Hayes
Download or read book Heffo - A Brilliant Mind written by Liam Hayes and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Heffernan was a giant amongst GAA men. A giant with a brilliant mind who repeatedly warned everybody that he would not let his own mother get in the way of him winning one more game of football. Heffo was deeply admired and absolutely feared like no other. And like no other manager in the history of the GAA, his strength of mind and brutal toughness as a leader raised an army that was called his own – Heffo’s Army. Heffo: A Brilliant Mind tells the Kevin Heffernan story for the first time. It’s the story of a boy with the biggest dreams, and a man who lived with triumphs and the greatest regrets. It’s the story of a club, and how Heffo and St Vincent’s GAA club revolutionized the game of Gaelic football and changed the face of Dublin football forever. It’s the story, too, of a great war. Heffo: A Brilliant Mind dramatically re-enacts the battles that Kevin Heffernan fought over four decades as a footballer and a manager in a long and punishing war with Kerry. A war waged by one man with the courage and fearlessness of a true giant.

Book Synopsis Cork's Revolutionary Dead by : Barry Keane
Download or read book Cork's Revolutionary Dead written by Barry Keane and published by Mercier Press Ltd. This book was released on 2017-06-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part 1 Keane gives a brief introduction to the period and outlines the most important events that took place during the course of the fight against the British in Cork from 1916 to 1921 and during the Civil War of 1922–23. This includes the burning of Cork city, the ambush at Kilmichael (which is examined in great detail), Crossbarry and the story of Tom Barry's trench coat. In Part 2 Keane uses a wealth of new sources to reconstruct every death that can be ascribed to the war, including those caught in the crossfire and some accidental deaths that can be directly linked to one side or the other. Some individuals who did not die in the county, but who were central to the conduct of the war there, are also included. One such example is Terence MacSwiney, who died in Brixton prison in London in October 1920, but was both head of the IRA in Cork and lord mayor of the city, having assumed the role after his predecessor, Tomás MacCurtain, had been assassinated earlier that year.
