Download or read book The Reality of Women in the Universe of the Ancient Novel written by María Paz López Martínez and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers chapters related to the condition of women in the ancient novel. To broaden the perspective, it integrates not only papers dealing with the Greek and Roman novel as a literary genre in its own right, but also as a historical document involving aspects as diverse as history, archaeology, sociology and the history of law. The twenty-six contributions in this volume have been divided into thematic blocks, based on the different approaches that the authors have adopted to tackle the subject. The first block is about realia – the reality in which the fiction has been conceived. The second block focuses on the legal problems that can be deduced from the plots of the novels. The third block encompasses deals with the Greek and Roman novel from the point of view of classical philology, literary criticism and literary theory, with chapters dedicated to the tradition of the ancient novel, both in our most immediate cultural area (Middle Ages, Spanish Golden Age) and in other contexts, whether Indo-European (India, Persia) or of a different origin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis A Brief History of the Amazons by : Lyn Webster Wilde
Download or read book A Brief History of the Amazons written by Lyn Webster Wilde and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Golden-shielded, silver-sworded, man-loving, male-child slaughtering Amazons,' is how the fifth-century Greek historian Hellanicus described the Amazons, and they have fascinated humanity ever since. Did they really exist? For centuries, scholars consigned them to the world of myth, but Lyn Webster Wilde journeyed into the homeland of the Amazons and uncovered astonishing evidence of their historic reality. North of the Black Sea she found archaeological excavations of graves of Iron Age women buried with arrows, swords and armour. In the hidden world of the Hittites, near the Amazons' ancient capital of Thermiscyra in Anatolia, she unearthed traces of powerful priestesses, women-only religious cults, and an armed, bisexual goddess - all possible sources for the ferocious women. Combining scholarly penetration with a sense of adventure, Webster Wilde has produced a coherent and absorbing book that challenges preconceived notions, still disturbingly widespread, of what men and women can do.

Book excerpt: Though women played an integral role in the conquest of the New World, little has been written about their contributions. This Spanish-language work examines the lives and deeds of women who influenced the course of history in the Americas some 500 years ago. Covered in detail are the lives of Maria de Toledo, first woman governor in America; Isabel de Bobadilla, governor of Cuba and instrumental in the Spanish expedition to Florida; Ana Francisca de Borja, governor of Peru and a military leader; Beatriz de la Cueva, governor of Guatemala and a political leader; Maria de Penalosa, governor of Nicaragua and a military strategist; Isabel Barreto y Quiros, first and only woman admiral of the Spanish navy; and mestizo leaders Francisca Pizarro and Leonor de Alvarado. Also covered are more than 40 other women of the same period--Spanish, Indian, and black--who held a wide variety of leadership positions. The book draws its information from the writings of respected early historians as well as historical documents from libraries and archives in Spain, Latin America and the United States.

Download or read book Amazonas written by Adrienne Mayor and published by Desperta Ferro Ediciones. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. 2015, Ganador de Silver Medal, Independent Publisher Book Awards, World History category. 2016, Reseñado por The New York Times Book Reviews "The Year in Reading". 2016, Ganador del Sarasvati Award for Best Nonfiction Book in Women and Mythology, Association for the Study of Women & Mythology.

Book Synopsis Las amazonas by : Lynn Webster Wilde
Download or read book Las amazonas written by Lynn Webster Wilde and published by Alianza Editorial. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
