Kenny Pearson is old enough to know better, but he doesn't care. As long as he can still knock a softball out of the park and brag about it over a beer with the guys afterward, life is good. Ida Bauer is old and doesn't mind saying so. Her husband is gone and so are most of her friends—and she has to face it—soon she will be too. Does she have anything left to offer in the time she has left? God has a plan for all these people...if only they will listen.

Book Synopsis The Construction of New Mathematical Knowledge in Classroom Interaction by : Heinz Steinbring
Download or read book The Construction of New Mathematical Knowledge in Classroom Interaction written by Heinz Steinbring and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is generally considered as the only science where knowledge is uni form, universal, and free from contradictions. „Mathematics is a social product - a 'net of norms', as Wittgenstein writes. In contrast to other institutions - traffic rules, legal systems or table manners -, which are often internally contradictory and are hardly ever unrestrictedly accepted, mathematics is distinguished by coherence and consensus. Although mathematics is presumably the discipline, which is the most differentiated internally, the corpus of mathematical knowledge constitutes a coher ent whole. The consistency of mathematics cannot be proved, yet, so far, no contra dictions were found that would question the uniformity of mathematics" (Heintz, 2000, p. 11). The coherence of mathematical knowledge is closely related to the kind of pro fessional communication that research mathematicians hold about mathematical knowledge. In an extensive study, Bettina Heintz (Heintz 2000) proposed that the historical development of formal mathematical proof was, in fact, a means of estab lishing a communicable „code of conduct" which helped mathematicians make themselves understood in relation to the truth of mathematical statements in a co ordinated and unequivocal way.

Book excerpt: Jan & Dean were among the most successful artists of the late 1950s through the mid-1960s, with hits including "Baby Talk," "Surf City," "Dead Man's Curve" and "The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)." Slapstick humor and offbeat personas were a big part of their shtick, but Jan Berry was serious when it came to the studio. This book chronicles Jan's career as a songwriter and arranger--and his tenure as producer for Jan & Dean and other acts--with day-by-day entries detailing recording sessions, single and album releases, concerts and appearances, film and television projects, behind-the-scenes business and legal matters, chart positions and more. Extensive commentary from Berry's family, friends and colleagues is included. Studio invoices, contract details, tape box notes, copyright information and other particulars shed light on how music was made in the Hollywood studio system of the 1960s.

Book Synopsis Carol's Counsel, Comedies, & Calamities by : Carol Dold
Download or read book Carol's Counsel, Comedies, & Calamities written by Carol Dold and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carol's Counsel, Comedies, & Calamities is a trilogy. Volumes I, II, & III include stories, poems, songs, and Bible studies - all designed to bring you into a deep place of commitment to Christ. The process of dying to self is painful. But it is only after we understand the fellowship of Christ's sufferings that we can be trusted with His resurrection power. Surrender is humbling but it is the nesting ground for all great things that are birthed in us and through us. The contents of this book will ignite emotions. You may find yourself laughing or, perhaps, even crying. Most of all, like me, I hope you will find yourself learning - learning to be conformed to Christ's image day by day. Some of the many thought provoking questions I address in this trilogy include: How do we know Jesus is God the Son? What is faith & why do we need it? Why does God allow suffering? Will pets be resurrected? How do we know the difference between sound doctrine versus false apostles? How does God feel about psychics, purgatory, reincarnation, body piercing, tattoos, and drinking? Is it okay to read the horoscope? How serious is gossip? Is it okay to play the lotto? What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? How should we view abortion or mercy killing? How can porn be overcome? What does fasting accomplish? How can we turn from addiction to adoration? Is internet dating acceptable? Should we believe in the theory of evolution; or, are we here by divine design? What are heaven & hell like? What must we each do to be eternally saved?

Book Synopsis The Honor of Her People by : James Oliver Curwood
Download or read book The Honor of Her People written by James Oliver Curwood and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by James Oliver Curwood was originally published in 1920 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "The Honor of Her People" is a short story which explores some complex relationships in this romantic adventure. James Oliver 'Jim' Curwood was an American action-adventure writer and conservationist. He was born on 12th June, 1878, in Owosso, Michigan, USA. In 1900, Curwood sold his first story while working for the Detroit News-Tribune, and after this, his career in writing was made. By 1909 he had saved enough money to travel to the Canadian northwest, a trip that provided the inspiration for his wilderness adventure stories. The success of his novels afforded him the opportunity to return to the Yukon and Alaska for several months each year - allowing Curwood to write more than thirty such books. Curwood's adventure writing followed in the tradition of Jack London. Like London, Curwood set many of his works in the wilds of the Great Northwest and often used animals as lead characters (Kazan, Baree; Son of Kazan, The Grizzly King and Nomads of the North). Many of Curwood's adventure novels also feature romance as primary or secondary plot consideration. This approach gave his work broad commercial appeal and helped drive his appearance on several best-seller lists in the early 1920s. His most successful work was his 1920 novel, The River's End. The book sold more than 100,000 copies and was the fourth best-selling title of the year in the United States, according to Publisher's Weekly. He contributed to various literary and popular magazines throughout his career, and his bibliography includes more than 200 such articles, short stories and serializations. Curwood was an avid hunter in his youth; however, as he grew older, he became an advocate of environmentalism and was appointed to the 'Michigan Conservation Commission' in 1926. The change in his attitude toward wildlife can be best expressed by a quote he gave in The Grizzly King: that 'The greatest thrill is not to kill but to let live.' Despite this change in attitude, Curwood did not have an ultimately fruitful relationship with nature. In 1927, while on a fishing trip in Florida, Curwood was bitten on the thigh by what was believed to have been a spider and he had an immediate allergic reaction. Health problems related to the bite escalated over the next few months as an infection set in. He died soon after in his nearby home on Williams Street, on 13th August 1927.

Book Synopsis Television Introductions by : Vincent Terrace
Download or read book Television Introductions written by Vincent Terrace and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of network television, many shows have been preceded by an announcement or theme song that served various purposes. In the 1950s and ’60s, it was common for announcers to declare that a program had been “brought to you by” a sponsor who paid for the privilege of introducing a show. Other programs, such as The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and The Odd Couple, provided a brief encapsulation of the show’s subject matter, a practice that has continued for recent shows like Alias, Battlestar Galactica, Person of Interest, and the various editions of Law & Order. In Television Introductions: Narrated TV Program Openings since 1949, Vincent Terrace has assembled openings for more than nine hundred television shows from the past seven decades. The only documented history of narrated television program introductions, this volume is arranged by type of programming, such as comedy, drama, Western, game show, soap opera, and children’s show. In addition to quoting the opening material, entries provide information about each show’s network history and years of broadcast. Many entries include descriptions of the show, the names of announcers, and a list of main cast members, as well as a sponsor pitch exactly as spoken. Openings for programs with multiple introductions like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Charlie’s Angels are also included. For programs that featured new guest stars every episode—such as game shows and variety programs—Terrace has selected a representative introduction. In addition to the theme song credits found in the main text, there are also appendixes of theme songs and their composers and/or singers, as well as a listing of commercial releases (on DVD, VHS, CD, and LP) of shows and their soundtracks. A comprehensive resource for researchers and pop culture aficionados alike, Television Introductions provides a fascinating look at this neglected part of TV history.

Download or read book The Tailor-King written by Anthony Arthur and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was only a Dutch tailor's apprentice, but from 1534 to 1535, Jan van Leyden led a radical sect of persecuted Anabaptists to repeated triumphs over the combined powers of church and state. Revered by his followers as the new David, the charismatic young leader pronounced the northern German city of Muenster a new Zion and crowned himself king. He expropriated all private property, took sixteen wives (supposedly emulating the biblical patriarchs), and in a deadly reign of terror, executed all who opposed him. As the long siege of Muenster resulted in starvation, thousands fled Jan's deadly kingdom while others waited behind the double walls and moats for the apocalyptic final attack by the Prince-Bishop's hired armies, supported by all the rulers of Europe. With the sudden rise to power of a compelling personality and the resulting violent threat to ordered society, Jan van Leyden's distant story strangely echoes the many tragedies of the twentieth century. More than just a fascinating human drama from the past, The Tailor-King also offers insight into our own troubled times.
